Oracle/SAP Competence Center orasap_cc@de.oracle.com This summer 1999, Hewlett Packard announced the industry's first SAP ATO (Assemble To Order) benchmark result for a 3-tier environment based on Oracle and another in a series of superior performance reports for its HP NetServer LXr 8000 using the Oracle8 database on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The NetServer LXr 8000 as a database server demonstrates incredible processing capacity by sustaining a rate of 9,130 fully business processed assembly orders per hour while maintaining excellent response time, averaging well under one second per transaction. This level of transaction throughput is the best ever reported for the SAP ATO Benchmark, over four times more than the next best result. The HP NetServer LXr 8000 database server was configured with four 500 MHz Intel Pentium III processors, each with 2MB L2 cache, 2GB of RAM and 524GB of disk storage. Running in a 3-tier client server environment using SAP R/3 version 4.0B, the HP NetServer LXr 8000 database server used the Oracle database supporting thirteen application servers. The application servers were also 4-way HP NetServer LXr

Each of these components has similar attributes to those of the tables or indexes from which they are based, including their own TABLESPACE and STORAGE clauses, among others. A partition can be thought of as a new data dictionary layer between Tables/Indexes and Tablespaces. TABLES Partitioning allows the user to partition tables into any number of separate partitions based on a partition key or key range, which can be comprised of one or several columns. All insert, update, or delete operations can be handled automatically through the use of this key. INDEXES Indexes can also be partitioned. They can either be managed independently, in which case they are known as global indexes or automatically linked to a table's partitioning method, in which case they are known as local indexes. Local indexes, because they are equipartitioned with the table and each table-index pair is independent from the rest, are easier to manage and offer greater availability. The ability to build global indexes is a key difference in Oracle8's Partitioning from Oracle7.3's. Partitioned Views, which could only do one index per partition.

3 3 of 6 Global indexes have the flexibility in that the degree and key of partitioning is independent of the table's partitioning method. So a global index could be used only a single index for a partitioned table, to have a partitioned index for a non-partitioned table, to have a different degree of partitioning, or to partition by different columns (key) than the base table. Local partitioned indexes are easier to manage and offer greater availability. Equi-partitioning allow's Oracle to automatically keep the index partitions in synch with the table partitions and makes each table-index pair independent. Any actions that make one partition's data invalid or unavailable won't affect the rest, increasing the overall availability of the data. Global partitioned indexes are harder to manage and don't offer as great availability gains. Management of these must be done manually and any operations such as dropping, truncating, exchanging, or splitting any table partition will make all of the indexes unusable, as any index can now have invalid data. While some availability gains are still made overnon-partitioned indexes, should one index partition become unavailable it would affect access to multiple table partitions. A partitioned index is either prefixed or non-prefixed depending on how it is partitioned relative to the index. An index is prefixed if it is partitioned by a left prefix of the index key. It has the potential for better performance, as any particular row is guaranteed to only portion of the index. An index is non-prefixed if it is not partitioned by a left prefix of the index key. It has the potential for worse performance, as any particular row is guaranteed to be in only one portion of the index. Details on this will be given later. This allows a total of four options as can be seen in Figure 4: global prefixed, global non-prefixed, local prefixed, and local non-prefixed, of which three options are allowed in Oracle8. Global non-prefixed indexes are not allowed as there is neither performance nor manageability gains for having them. Performance figures (Summary): Query without Partit. with Partit. For companies who wish to migrate their SAP R/3 installation from a non-oracle database to Oracle, the Center of Excellence for SAP is certified by SAP for R/3 database migrations. Professional service for migrations of any SAP database can be provided. Several customer systems have already been successfully migrated by the Center of Excellence for SAP. We offer you the best migration service you can get, because we have the experience to handle any problems that may arise from the database administrator s point of view. The Center of Excellence for SAP also offers an introduction to the new database. Migration Steps Analysis of the current system the storage capacity of the destination system is ascertained database specific configurations and customer specific R/3 implementations are examined Migration to a test system scripts for the needed unloads are written the database unload is started within the database unload a space calculation for your target database is created the unload files are loaded to a test system a timeframe of 2-4 weeks for intensive testing of the migrated system follows (performed by the customer) Migration to the productive system the import scripts are modified with the knowledge gained in importing into the test system the load is performed on the production system Examining migration results a special team within SAP is available to examine the customer system via remote connections

5 5 of 6 Working instructions short working instructions are given to the DBA the major administration steps are explained if requested, an administration workshop can be attached to the migration Oracle Management Pack for SAP R/3 allows for comprehensive monitoring and collecting of data from multiple systems. Oracle Management Pack for SAP R/3 extends the Oracle management framework to provide graphical monitoring of SAP R/3 application servers and collecting historical data for planning purposes. Administrators will now be able to monitor different Oracle databases and R/3 applications from a single place. This new integration allows for complete administration of the R/3 Oracle database and full graphical monitoring of all three layers of a standard R/3 environment with the operating system, database and R/3 application. Oracle Management Pack for SAP R/3 includes: display of application server configuration such as location, type of application server, number of application servers, type of report being processed collection of performance data from application servers such as CPU usage, memory used, number of work processes automatic loading of the collected data into an Oracle database performed at user-defined intervals flexible management of the collected historical data, including aggregation, rollup, and aging out of old data support for user-defined performance metrics collection of Oracle server and operating system data proactive problem detection with automated problem resolution low overhead data collection mechanism flexible installation and configuration options. Oracle Management Pack for SAP R/3 will be available with Oracle8 Release end of the year. Oracle is offering leading Database Technology on Linux for SAP R/3 Application Users; Broader Choice of Operating Systems on Intel based HW Platforms with Oracle8 and Oracle8i on Linux; Free Early Access CD to First 20,000 Registrants. Leveraging their industry leadership positions to further meet customer business requirements, Oracle Corp. and the Oracle/SAP Competence Center in Walldorf have announced this spring that Oracle8 for Linux is available. (For SAP R/3 FCS is this fall and GA in Q1 00). Oracle also opened Internet developer registration for Oracle8i on Linux via the Oracle(r) Technology Network(OTN), and announced that the first 20,000 registrants will receive a free early access CD. Through this special offer OTN members can register at

As part of the previously announced Oracle Partner Program First-to-Market initiative for independent software vendors (ISVs), SAP has chosen the Oracle dataserver as one of their major Linux database platforms. Intensive tests at SAP with Oracle8 on Linux have confirmed Oracle s position as the leading provider of database products for the ERP market. The availability of Oracle8 for SAP R/3 on Linux will allow customers to choose a proven alternative operating system for their Intel-based Database Servers. It expands the scalability of their SAP environment, and increases performance and high availability.
