2 From the Executive Director After completing my first full year as the Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Ottawa, I continue to be amazed at how the Ottawa community truly surrounds our students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. From our growing list of partner businesses and organizations to our faithful volunteers who give of their time, talent, and treasure to ensure that Ottawa students have every opportunity to break through the barriers they face each day. Our work to implement the CIS model in every Ottawa school is proving to be effective as we reach more students than ever before. Rachel Smith Executive Director Communities In Schools of Ottawa

3 I am currently serving my fifth year on the Board of Directors for Communities In Schools of Ottawa. Two years ago I served as vice-chair and I am currently serving as chair. The school year brought significant changes in our staff with the hiring of a new executive director and 4 new site coordinators. The current year has seen 2 site coordinators exchange positions. Changes in staff always bring challenges; however, they can also bring new growth as the result of new ideas implemented by those new staff members. There have also been challenges with funding as grant money has decreased. However, our executive director and site coordinators have continued to provide valuable services for kids at-risk in USD 290. With an excellent staff and dedicated board, I am confident we will be able to meet the challenges of the future. From the Chair Russ Testorff Board Chair

4 Our Economic Impact In 2012, Communities In Schools released the results of an economic impact study conducted by EMSI, one of the nation s leading economic modeling firms. The purpose of the study was to quantify the return on investment of Communities In Schools 113 high school-serving affiliates in its network to taxpayers, businesses, and students. Among the findings: The average annual rate of return to society is 18.4%. The benefit/cost ratio is 11.6, which means that every dollar invested in Communites In Schools creates $11.60 of economic benefit for the community. High school graduates will be net contributors to their communities for an average of 44 years of their working life, using their increased income to purchase homes and cars, and paying taxes that will support the police officers, firefighters and teachers.

5 Read more about the economic impact study and the evaluation on our website, cismidamerica.org. Our Student Impact In 2011, Communities In Schools gained significant proof that what we do works. Over five years, ICF International conducted an evaluation of our work with students and schools across the country. Multi-level, multi-method, multiphase, gold-standard research, the study was the largest and most comprehensive evaluation of dropout prevention programs ever completed. Among the outcomes are: Communities In Schools is one of very few organizations proven to keep students in school. It is the only one proven to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates. More Communities In Schools students reach proficiency in 4th and 8th grade reading and math.
