5 Nutrition Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy and are classified into two groups Simple carbohydrates or sugars are easily and quickly broken down by your body and are found in foods containing refined sugar which offer your body next to no nutritional value. Complex carbohydrates or starches are found in grain products, starchy vegetables, beans and peas. These carbs take more time for your body to break down into glucose, which means you will feel full for longer than when you eat refined, simple carbs. Carbohydrates should account for 45% - 65% of the calories in your diet Mental Training Focus Focus or mental concentration is a mental skill that involves choosing where to focus your attention, understanding how to deal with distractions, focusing for a certain amount of time and shifting your focus when necessary. When you are doing your warm up focus on the muscles you are using. Before you begin your practice, clear your mind and set a purpose for that days practice. Focus on what you need to do and can control. Stay positive and present. Identify distractions you encounter on the ice, then use a technique such as the hot air balloon to gather your thoughts and distractions in then let the balloon float away. To increase your focus endurance try concentrating for short periods of time then building your time up, say start with concentrating only on a jump then work up to concentrating through your entire program. Off Ice Training STARS Combine S.T.A.R.S. is a new system of off-ice fitness assessment and development designed to support U.S. Figure Skating's existing testing and competition progressions. Its development is based primarily on the need to promote robust, all-around fitness in young American skaters; to push and maintain the athletic ability curve ahead of the skills curve; to ensure that young figure skaters are physically prepared to handle the introduction of new, more complex and more demanding skating skills; and to reduce the potential for injury typically sustained during the training of these new skills. There will be a day of fun and fitness called the STARS Combine in Marlborough, MA on July 7th (registration June 7th). More information at the link below:
