3 HOULTON Marc A. Arnts ex. 248 The Shiretown Scribes The Shiretown Scribes is an open forum writers group that gathers at Visions, a local art gallery in Houlton, on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, September through June. Writing styles include poetry, short stories, memoirs and selections from an autobiography, currently being put together by one of our members. Selections tend to be nonfiction, but works of fiction appear from time to time and are also welcome. We encourage members of the public to come and listen to the works we share. Cumberland County BRUNSWICK Maureen Ann Connolly bawg@maine.rr.com Brunswick Area Writers Group (BAWG) Organized in 2005, BAWG is a women-only group that meets 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month from September to June at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick. Members are writing fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, and plays. The group includes members who have earned or who are working toward MFAs. Members have won Maine Literary Awards in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Membership is limited. CASCO Elaine Griffin ebtgriffin@roadrunner.com Lakes Region Writers Guild The Lakes Region Writer s Guild meets at the Casco Public Library. The Guild s founder is Elaine Griffin. Two other founding writers from the first meeting, Deb Smith and Alan Lapidus, are still with the group. Membership is held to one dozen but queries are welcome. The Lakes Region Writers Guild meets every other Saturday at 10:00 a.m. excluding holiday weekends and August. FREEPORT Pam Blake pamblake@aol.com Freeport Unscriptedp We are a diverse group of writers in genre, style and age, bound together by our love of writing. Members bring a desire to write and learn. They also provide an open ear to offer support and render honest, caring feedback. A new group, we find that every meeting brings surprises, and we would welcome a few new members. We meet Monday afternoons in the Freeport Community Library, our sponsor. 1
4 PORTLAND Lauri Dugas Bryan Wiggins Renee Robbins Greater Portland Writers Group We are an enthusiastic, creative, and friendly writing group that meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Portland Public Library s Riverton Branch. We share work via an online Drop Box up to about a week prior to our next gathering and give honest feedback personally at the meeting. Our meetings are well attended with everyone making an effort to be present. Currently we are a five-member group and have a seven-member limit. Fiction, Non-Fiction, Essays, and Screenplays are welcome. The Pine Cone Writers Den Meets monthly. Capped at eight members, but members cycle in and out. Genres include fiction, memoir, and essays. Little Sebago Lake Writers Group Raymond/Windham area writing group seeks a few new members with completed novel, novel-in-progress, or short stories to share. All genres except poetry. We bring copies of our work to group sessions, read aloud, and receive verbal and written feedback. Group meets every other Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Raymond. Hancock County DEER ISLE Brenda Gilchrist brenda.gilchrist@gmail.com Deer Isle Writers Group Members of the Deer Isle Writers Groups have gathered regularly for more than twenty years to encourage and support one another in improving their writing skills. Meetings are held in the homes of members on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and on alternate Tuesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. These meetings are open to prospective new members and guests. The first part of the meeting of the morning group is spent writing either work-in-progress or newly inspired prose or poetry. Members may then choose to read their work and receive critiques from their fellow writers. Our evening group is a critique group and members bring copies of their writing to share with each member present (usually 8 10 copies). Writing may be a poems or 3 4 pages of prose. Special arrangements are sometimes made to present longer works in progress. The groups have self-edited and published two anthologies: Eggemoggin Reach Review: Volume I and Volume II. In addition, members have had their works chosen for publication both in print and online or self-published. GOULDSBORO Cynthia Thayer darthiafarm@gmail.com Peninsula Writers Group Meets every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All professional, published writers working in all genres are welcome. 2
5 Kennebec County READFIELD Ted Bookey Lenore Bayne Ted Bookey A group of Maine poets that meets monthly for more than five years and usually has about ten members. Meets on a Saturday. Group is by invitation only. Readfield Writers Group Strong, very supportive, and many times fun group has an opening for a writer of prose or poetry who is serious about his/her own work and willing to provide thoughtful critiques to others. Meetings are held on Sundays from 7:00 9:00 p.m. If interested, please contact Lenore Bayne with a short description of your experience and goals. Knox County CAMDEN/ROCKLAND/THOMASTON Jeff Foltz jfoltz2@myfairpoint.net Jeff Foltz Meets once a month on various days of the week at different members homes. The group is primarily focused on fiction but open to guests. Oxford County RUMFORD Brenda Espinoza Rumford Writers Group Meets the first Monday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. All genres. Waldo County BELFAST Karie Friedman karie@fairpoint.net Poets Table The Poets Table is a Belfast-based writing group that meets on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month to share work and discuss how to strengthen it with an eye towards publication. The meeting place is most often the basement of the Belfast Historical Museum, though occasionally we meet at a member s home. New members will be considered. We are looking for fellow poets who read widely enough to be conversant with the contemporary poetry scene, write regularly with the aim of publication, consider revision to be part of the writing process, are able to contribute to a respectful, constructive discussion of someone else s work, identifying its strengths first. Our current membership of five includes one with an MFA and two who are enrolled in low-residency MFA programs. All have had poems published in literary magazines, one has a chapbook, and another just won a chapbook competition. None of us has as yet 3
6 published a book. We also participate in local poetry events, of which there are many in Belfast. York County KENNEBUNK David Morse davmor7@maine.rr.com The Kennebunk Writers This group meets monthly at the Kennebunk Free Library. We are a small group and currently there are no openings. Genre is limited to prose, fiction, and nonfiction. 4
