1 THE TROUBLE WITH Written by Chad Schnackel & David Dalton Pages: 2+ Characters: Stacey, high school age girl Liz, 25+ Synopsis: Stacy has a history of trouble, but this counselor doesn't write her off. 2 INT. COUNSELOR'S OFFICE - DAY sits behind a desk looking at some notes. There is a knock at the door and walks in. She slumps down in the chair across from Liz. Liz looks up and notices Stacey s mood. She frowns and goes back to looking at her notes. Neither say a word. Liz ignores Stacey. Stacey keeps staring at Liz. Finally, Stacey speaks up. I am not going to say anything, you know? Without looking up from her notes Liz responds. I didn t ask you to. Liz continues with her notes. She writes down something and Stacey takes notice. Are those about me? They are confidential. Well if they are about me I think I should know what they say. Liz continues writing stuff down not looking up. Stacey tries to take a peak. Liz closes the folder and finally looks up. Well, what do they say? I can t tell you. Stacey starts to get a little angry. Why not!? I want to know what people are saying about me! What do you think they are saying about you? Well if I knew that I wouldn t be asking you, now would I?

3 Do you think people talk bad about you? I don t care what people say. None of it matters anyway. Why would you say that? What makes you feel that way? Look lady. Just tell me my punishment and I can get out of here. Liz looks at Stacey for a minute. Then opens up the folder and writes something else down. Stacey tries to see what it is but Liz hides it from her. Stacey finally gives up and sits deeper in the chair. Can I go yet? Not just yet. Well are you at least going to talk to me? You said you didn t want to talk. Stacey is confused at this tactic. That s never stopped anyone before. Oh, have you been in a lot of trouble in other schools? Like a million times. Why do you think that is? Cause people suck.

4 Oh so it s everyone else s fault, huh? Well if they didn t open their stupid mouths I wouldn t get into trouble. Do you think maybe if you stopped doing what you did you would stop getting into trouble? Don t try to confuse me. How much detention do I have? Are you in a hurry? Kind of, yeah. Well I m sorry, you are just going to have to wait. I called your father, he is on his way in. Stacey s eyes grow wide. She almost becomes scared. She looks around. You don t have to do that. Every time I used to get into trouble they just gave me detention. Well, your father made a special deal to get you into this school. No one else wanted to take you. But the deal was, one screw up and you are out. Stacey realizes how badly she screwed up. Look, I promise not to get into trouble anymore. Please call my dad back and tell him not to come. I m afraid it s too late for that.

5 But... Look, he s all alone and works all the time since mom died. He doesn t need this. Maybe you should have thought about that before you got into trouble. Stacey finally gives in. I ll talk. I ll do whatever it is I need to do. Please, just don t bother him with this. Please! Liz contemplates for a moment. She doesn t grab the phone but instead looks at Stacey. Do you want to talk about your mother s death? It was a year ago... FADE TO BLACK.
