1 Mentor program a chance to always receive help when you need it What is a mentor? Each group of first years gets two or three mentors. A mentor is an older student who is volunteering to help their assigned group of students by answering their questions, guiding them through their school year and helping to solve problems that might occur. The mentors are there so that you could turn to them when you don t know how to get to a particular class, want to receive tips on how to prepare for a certain exam, or are simply curious where to have a good lunch in Kaunas. When and how will I be able to talk to them? Your mentors will make sure to contact you, their assigned students, to set up group meetings during which you will be able to ask them questions and listen to their advice on university life. Can I turn to my mentor for help even between meetings? Yes, of course! Your mentor(s) and you will agree on your preferred means of contacting each other and exchange contact details. Feel free to ask them questions and they will help to the best of their ability. If you would like to meet in person and your mentors are available, you can also do that. Will my mentor always be able to help? You have to remember that your mentors are also students, just like you. If they are unable to help you or are studying for an important exam that they have the next day, you can always come to the International office and ask any questions you might have. Also, if your mentors don t have sufficient knowledge to answer your questions, they will most likely direct you to the office, too. As a student, settling into a new country can be daunting task for some. From my previous experience as a mentor, I can safely say that majority of the students adapted and settled in very quickly thanks to the friendly approach of the university. If nonetheless a problems arise, let it be as simple as getting your way around town or if you need help with studies or whatever big, small or silly the issues are, you can always approach me or any of the other mentors. 7 Mobby Elizabeth Mathew, OF12 Hello everybody and welcome to our LSMU family! I m really excited that you decided to attend medical school in Lithuania! There is so much in store for you in the upcoming years! Let me tell you a bit about myself, I m Mobby Elizabeth Mathew a current fifth year medic, who was born and raised in Saudi Arabia but, currently resides in England. Having a curious mind has helped me lots as it enabled me to mentor for the past three years. There is so much you can learn and give back when you meet new faces each year. It is a nerve racking decision to study far away from home, where you have to start building relationships and a life from scratch. The best part though, you can start afresh. We as mentors are here to help you with your transition, however long it may take and because we were in your shoes not too long ago, most of what you experience will not sound too foreign to most of us. There are so many activities, places, societies and unions you can join to meet new people and in general get involved. More details will be given as soon as you arrive! 9 Thomas Kirsch, VMF13 Who am I? Before I studied Veterinary Medicine I have tried out many things, including 2 other studies (business psychology, brewing and beverage technologies). It took a while to find the right studies. I have travelled a lot to other countries and spend there some time, like China, Australia, Canada and Russia mostly. I also love animals, especially dogs. Why I wanted to be a mentor: It is already my second year as a mentor and I think it s important to help and support the new students with our knowledge, to make the start as easy as possible for them at LSMU and in Kaunas.
