2 Course Objectives 1) To teach the student the techniques for the design and application of stage make up. 2) To teach the student the styles of makeup (ie. basic, straight, character, and stylistic) 3) To teach the student to design and apply makeup to himself and others. Equipment You will need to purchase a Ben Nye Theatrical Crème Makeup kit. We will place a class order for these kits or you can purchase one on line, yourself. The order will be placed by the Bookworm and should be available for you to purchase by the January 26 th class. In addition to this kit you will need a good makeup remover, (cold crème or baby wipes work well), and a set of false eyelashes. You should consider adding other sundries, such as mascara, powdered eye shadows, face glitters, etc. as needed. You have paid a $15.00 lab fee for this class at registration. This fee covers class makeup supplies as well as a final cd and copies of digital photographs of your makeup applications. You will want to retain these photos as they will be an important part of your final portfolio. The final piece of equipment you need for this class is a clean (makeup free, clean shaven) face. Course Work This is a Hands on, project based, participatory class. The class consists primarily of makeup techniques and applications performed during the scheduled class periods. Homework preparation for these applications consists of determining, researching and sketching the design and intent of your makeup before coming to class. The class time will pass very quickly and you must come to class on time and prepared with book, kit, sketch and other research. Your sketches and research will be turned in after each class and will be considered in determining your grade for that project. If you do not come to class prepared you will not be allowed to attempt the makeup project for that day and will have to make it up at the end of the semester. Throughout the semester you will keep a portfolio of your designs, research and photographs of each finished project. This portfolio will then be submitted (in notebook form) at the end of the semester. In addition to this portfolio of your work you will build a research file (in notebook form) of research and inspiration images for the makeup categories (faces, features, animals, age, cuts and bruises, tattoos, fantasy, ethnic resources and so on) we are working with. The Research Image File is due March 23. The final project for the class will consist of a written character and makeup analysis, with sketches, of at least 6 characters of a play of your choice. During the final period you will apply the makeup for one of the characters you have analyzed. Complexity and creativity is important in the choice both of play and character. This project will also include a brief synopsis and analysis of the play including your reasoning for the choice of style. You will also include informational and inspirational research which led to your designs. Attendance

3 You will have approximately 1 hour to produce your makeup. The remaining 15 minutes will be used in taking photos, critiques of the makeup design and application and in cleaning up. It is very important that you come to class on time and prepared. 3 tardy arrivals will count as 1 absence and will affect your final grade. Because in class critiques of the individual makeup applications is an esential element of the class your presence and participation is expected. You are allowed 2 absences due to illness or unavoidable conflicts without any adverse affect on your grade. A 3 rd 4 th and 5 th absence will result in the lowering of your final grade by 5 points each. Upon your 6th absence (or equivalent tardy arrivals) you will receive an ʺFʺ, or ʺUʺ for the semester. You must complete all projects (highlighted in bold on the syllabus) for the class. Any missed project must be made up. The last 2 class periods, Tuesday April 20 and Thursday, April 22, are available for this purpose. If you have completed all projects on the designated class days you may use the final makeup class to re do a project to better your grade, work on perfecting techniques, or in research and preparation for the final project. Additional opportunities to make up projects are available with special permission and by pre arranged appointment. The policy on student academic misconduct is outlined in the Student Conduct Code Academic Misconduct Policy in the Student Handbook online ( Technology: The use of technology is a wonderful aid for communication and learning, but it must be used appropriately. No cell phones, pda s, mp3 players, or other devices are allowed on or out in the classroom unless authorized by the instructor. Sending, reading and/or receiving text messages is also inappropriate in the classroom. It is unethical and unacceptable to use recording

4 devices (such as camera phones, digital video, etc) in or outside of the classroom to film faculty, staff or students without their permission. If any devices are out or go off (making any sound at all) during class time, the owner s grade may be penalized. Grading 72% of your grade will be determined by the successful application of the 18 makeup projects. Each project will be graded on a 40 point scale. Points are assessed based on your mastering of the technique involved, the appropriateness of the design, and your preparedness. Again, your sketch for the design of the makeup will be turned in and considered in assigning a grade for the project, and failure to attempt any project will result in the lowering of your final grade one full letter grade. 4% will be based on class participation. 5% will be based on the successful compilation of your portfolio 5% will be based on the successful compilation of your research file. 7% will be determined by the final paper 7% will be determined by the final makeup application Your Final grade will be assigned using the Plus/Minus grading system. 5 THRA 160 Stage Makeup Final Project Fall :00 A.M. Wednesday, April 28, 2010 The final project is due on Wednesday, April 28 when you arrive to apply the final makeup. This project is made up of 5 parts and comprises 24% of your final grade (5% each for the research file and portfolio and 14% for the final project paper, designs and application). 1) A portfolio of the photos taken of your makeup applications for the semester arranged in some easy to scan and meaningful (preferably chronological) way. (ie: in plastic photo sheets, mounted in a scrap book format etc.) This section should also include the research and sketches involved in the development of each design. 2) A Research File of tear sheets and research for future makeup applications. You should have a minimum of 13 categories with a minimum of images in each. These should include all of the areas that we have worked with in the class (old age, cuts and bruises, facial hair, period makeup, fantasy, gender reversal, glamour/drag, animals, ceremonial masks, clowns, tattoos, famous people, Chinese Opera) as well as any other you choose to include. 3) The final makeup application is based on a character selected from a play of your choice. You will write a short (3 pages) analysis of the play based on evidence from the script. As in all script analysis look for descriptive phrases from the dialogue rather than from the italicized descriptive and blocking notes of the original production. This is not a plot synopsis except as it relates to the appearance or changing appearance of the characters. It should include the era (modern, period, futuristic, etc.) mood (happy, brooding, philosophical, political, etc) style (comedy, tragedy, etc.) and any other stylistic considerations, as well as a discussion of your personal interpretation of the characters. This interpretation can be as non traditional as you like as long as you can support your ideas from the script. 4) Select 6 characters from the script and design makeup for them on paper. Show your research and sketches and compose a paragraph or so for each describing your intent and reasoning in the resulting design. (These descriptions are in addition to the 3 page discussion of the script.) 5) Select one of the 6 designs you have created to apply during the final period. The more complex and cleanly applied the better. This application should demonstrate the skills you have acquired during the semester. This is your choice, so show yourself at your best. Practice before for extra confidence.
