1 Thank you for choosing to share your students with sweetfrog. We are pleased to offer our Leap Forward Field Trips to teachers and their students as a fun way to practice fundamental lessons being taught in school. Each lesson plan has been carefully designed by teachers to match skill levels for each grade. Every sweetfrog field trip ends in a sweet reward (a delicious cup of frozen yogurt + one topping of your choice) making this excursion something both students and teachers can get excited about.

2 FOUTH SIXTH GDE Field Trip (teacher plan) Set up: 1. Put a cup with crayons at each table and Draw your FOYO coloring sheets (draw a picture of their FOYO with favorite 2 toppings) 2. Each group will get one pink cup with 24 skittles in it and four sample cups numbered 1,2,3,4 (Pass out after Welcome with instructions NOT TO ET CNDY) Welcome students 1. What do we do here? (make frozen yogurt!) 2. Who has been here before? 3. How does sweetfrog relate to math? (making yogurt, creating combinations of yogurt and toppings, weighing yogurt, purchasing yogurt) 4. What do you notice about the number of yogurt flavors and toppings we have here at sweetfrog? (many possibilities) 5. Why do you think sweetfrog offers so many choices for yogurt flavors and toppings? (lots of combinations) 6. Make an announcement about how and when everyone will get their FOYO today. When their lessons are done and their group is chosen, they will: a. Get a PINK cup b. dd their favorite FOYO can be more than one flavor in their cup c. Select TWO toppings. d. Weigh their cup and write down the number on their worksheet (you may want a parent in charge of this and sending kids back to the table with a small post-it with the number on it.) e. Write down their choice of FOYO and the two toppings they picked. 7. Sound good? Then let s all get started on Lesson One! Lesson One (questions 1-4): 1. If you can choose between three flavors (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry) and three toppings (M & M's, blueberries, and gummy worms), how many different combinations of a treat with ONE flavor and ONE topping can be created? Show combinations in the space provided (answer = 9). 3. What method did you use to find the total number of combinations? 4. What combinations did you find? 5. How many different combinations are there? Lesson Two (question 5): 1. Take four empty cups and put the following number of Skittles in each cup: 3, 5, 10 and If you are sharing Skittles with your 4 friends, how can you rearrange the Skittles so that each friend receives a "fair share"? 3. What is the "fair share" of Skittles for each friend? nswer = 6; the Skittles are rearranged so there are 6 in each cup. Other names for the "fair share" are the "mean" and the "average", but all these names refer to the same thing. To find the "fair share" or "mean" or "average", we add up all the skittles and then divide by the number of friends. Since we have 4 friends, we divide by 4. 1

3 Lesson Three (question 6-7): 1. Using the same four cups, put the following number of Skittles in each cup (CUP1: 2 skittles, CUP2: 8 skittles, CUP3: 4 skittles, and CUP4: 10 skittles). 2. Weigh each cup. 3. ecord the weight of each cup to the nearest tenth of an ounce. (question #6) 4. gain, we want our friends to receive a fair share of yogurt. Using the calculator at your table, find the "fair share" or "mean" or "average" weight of the four cups of yogurt. (question #7) Word Search / Graphing (question 8-10) Once each student completes the word search, have students raise their hand to be selected to get their yogurt. Explain the process: 1. Pick out a PINK cup. 2. Fill with your favorite frozen yogurt. 3. dd TWO toppings. 4. Weigh. 5. nswer questions (Teachers: use answers from questions 8,9 &10 for hands on graphing later) 2

How many flavors did you have to choose from? 3. How many toppings did you have to choose from? 4. What is the total number of combinations you could create? LESSON TWO Take four empty cups and put the following number of Skittles in each cup: 8, 2, 4 and 6.
