4 Learning at Downe Manor Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) Our curriculum for the Foundation Stage reflects the areas of learning identified in the Early Foundation Stage. Our children's learning experiences enable them to develop competency and skill across the seven areas of learning. The curriculum of the Foundation Stage underpins all future learning by promoting and developing: The Prime Areas Communication and Language development Physical development Personal, social and emotional development The Specific Areas School Council Life at Downe Manor We have an active school council who work hard to develop and improve things in our school as well as taking part in projects to raise money for charitable causes. Our school council is made up of two representatives from each class. Each class votes for their school council representative at the start of the school year. The elected members then have the job of representing the views of their classes at the school council meetings as well as all helping with the smooth running of the council. Everyone has a say from Year 1 to Year 6 children. The school council is helped by a class teacher who attends the meetings. A message from School Council We as the school council improve our school by making wise decisions such as introducing new playground equipment and wet playtime games. The pupils at Downe Manor all want to learn and contribute to the local community by making Downe Manor a great place to learn! Literacy development Mathematics Understanding of the world Expressive arts and design Our planning is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework document, Practice Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

5 Life at Downe Manor Learning at Downe Manor Absence If your child is absent, please contact the school office in the morning. If your child is absent and we have not received communication, we will send a text message reminding you to inform the school as to the reason your child is absent. In line with the Education Regulations updated 1 September 2013, schools are unable to grant any leave of absence during term time. Please see: for more guidance. Extra-Curriculum Activities A programme of after-school activities runs each term. A timetable of these activities can be found on the school website. Key Stage One and Two (Years 1-6) The School Curriculum follows the National Curriculum. English and Mathematics are taught discretely with cross curricular links where possible. Humanities, Science Art and Design and Technology are taught through cross curricular thematic topics. Subjects offered include English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Design Technology (DT), History, Geography, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Religious Education (RE), Art, Physical Education (PE) Modern Foreign Language (MFL-French in KS2 only) and Music. Religious Education Religious Education is presented in a non-denominational manner. Morals are drawn from all faiths to demonstrate the need for a socially responsible and tolerant outlook to one another and life in general. An act of collective worship takes place daily. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from religious worship and instruction. Parents are requested to advise the Headteacher in writing. Health Education (including Sex and Relationship education) General aspects of health education are covered as part of Science and DT. Individual issues which require guidance are dealt with by class teachers and support staff. Sex & Relationship Education is covered as part of the PSHE curriculum. Parents are made aware in advance of the topic being presented and any queries will be answered by staff responsible for the subject area. Parents can withdraw children from all or part of the sex education programme, except lessons required to be attended as part of national curriculum science.

6 Special Educational Needs All children will receive equality of opportunity and access to the whole curriculum while working within their own class situation. The school will ensure that this consists of a caring, stimulating, happy and safe environment where each child is equally valued. A child with "special educational needs" is defined in the Education Act 1993 as one which has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of their age. The school aims to identify these children as early as possible in order to provide a broad balanced curriculum in which they are equally valued. Those with social or emotional problems are also included. Children with Special Educational Needs receive small group or individual programmes of learning in addition to their whole class lessons. The school accesses outside agencies, including the Educational Psychologist, Speech Therapist and the Outreach services for children with complex learning and physical needs. The school has a detailed Disability Equality Scheme and Accessibility Plan that shows how the school will provide equal opportunity for all. For pupils with physical disabilities the school offers the same broad and balanced curriculum it offers to all pupils. There are disabled toilets available. Parental Involvement and SEN Life at Downe Manor Meal arrangements Children may either bring a healthy packed lunch from home or they can purchase a meal from our in-school caterers, Chartwells can provide a hot lunch or a packed lunch for A menu can be found on our website.
