This schedule provides traditional, online, and hybrid classes for a wide range of students with lifestyles involving commitments to family members, careers, and civic engagements. For 48 years Galveston College has offered a quality, affordable higher education environment that is supported W. Myles Shelton, Ed.D. by dedicated faculty and staff with an interest in serving our student constituents. As we near our golden anniversary milestone we are involved with expanding our facilities and our programs to provide the best opportunities for higher education, workforce training, professional development and leisure learning. 5 GETTING STARTED APPLYING FOR ADMISSION For admission consideration to degree and certificate programs, new students need to complete the following steps: 1. Complete the Application for Admissions and the Residency Questionnaire. 2. Submit official transcripts from home /high schools and colleges and universities attended. 3. If required, take appropriate placement tests. 4. Meet with a Counselor, Faculty Advisor, or Program Coordinator to discuss your degree plan and plan your class schedule. 5. Submit evidence of the Bacterial Meningitis vaccination. 6. Register and pay for classes using Whitecaps portal or in person. READMISSION Previously enrolled students who have not attended Galveston College for at least one semester (not including summer sessions) must reenroll by completing and submitting a Readmissions Application to the Office of Admissions located in Moody Hall. The Readmissions Application can also be downloaded online at Students who have been away from GC for one year or more must reapply by completing a new Application for Admission and the Residency Questionnaire. IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR NEW AND READMITTED STUDENTS Pursuant to the Jamie Schanbaum and Nicolis Williams Act, all entering students to an institution of higher education or private or independent institution after January 1, 2012, MUST show evidence of being immunized against bacterial meningitis. (Texas Education Code ) Entering student is defined as: a) A new student a first-time student in an institution of higher education, or the private or independent institution of higher education, including a student who transfers to the institution from another institution or b) A student who previously attended an institution of higher education before January 1, 2012 and is enrolling in the same or another institution following a break in enrollment of at least one fall or spring semester. The bill exempts from the immunization a student who is enrolled only in online or other long dis- Spring 2015 Credit Schedule 5

6 tance education courses or who is 22 years of age or older. Other exemptions include: a) An affidavit from the physician stating that obtaining the vaccination would be injurious to the health or well-being of the student, b) An affidavit notarized by the student that he/she declines the vaccination for reasons of conscience, that includes religious beliefs. Evidence of the vaccination must be during the five years preceding and at least 10 days prior to the first day of the semester session in which the student plans to enroll. How to provide evidence of vaccination to Galveston College Office of Admissions: Submit a signed official notification from your physician indicating the month, day, and year the vaccination was administered, or Submit an official immunization record generated from a state or local health authority, or Submit a signed notification from your physician that obtaining the vaccination will be injurious to your health or Submit a notarized affidavit that the student declines the vaccination for reasons of conscience. Proof of your vaccination must be submitted to the Office of Admissions (M-160) in person, via adm@gc.edu or via fax (409) For additional information, please visit or DUAL CREDIT & EARLY ADMISSIONS PROGRAM Enrollment in Galveston College s Dual Credit/Early Admissions Program provides high school students an opportunity to get a head-start on earning transferable college credits at a minimal cost before high school graduation. Contact Galveston College Office of Admissions at (409) for a list of courses and admission procedures or visit The Advantages of the Dual Credit & Early Admissions Program include: Earn college credit while in high school. Courses are transferrable to four-year colleges and universities. Savings on tuition costs and fees compared to that of a four-year college. Qualifications for Dual Credit & Early Admissions: 1. Completion of the sophomore year of high school. 2. Parental approval and recommendation by the high school principal. 3. Score at college level on TAKS, SAT, ACT, STAAQR, PSAT or TSI assessment. 4. 7 NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION New Student Orientation is MANDATORY for all first-time, fulltime entering students registering for credit classes. Students may choose either a face-to-face or online orientation. The schedule of sessions held on campus is listed below. Please see the Online Orientation section for more details on that option. Visit the Galveston College website (www. gc.edu) homepage. Located under the Welcome New Students section is a heading labeled Online new student orientation. Click the link and register for either option. Tuesday, November 4, :00 a.m. Thursday, November 13, :00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, :00 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, :00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, :00 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, :00 p.m. (Second Start Orientation) Orientation sessions provide students with information on the many services available at Galveston College. In addition students are also able to register early for courses. Students who are required to take the TSI Assessment cannot register for classes without taking the exam. It is strongly recommended you complete this exam prior to attending orientation. The TSI Assessment Examination requires a fee of $29 and the completion of a pre-assessment activity prior to testing. See the Counseling Office to make your reservation for a testing, check your TSI status and receive more information regarding the pre-assessment activity. Before paying for your exam please make sure you complete the following: Reserve your space for New Student Orientation Speak with a Student Success Advisor regarding the pre-assessment activity Pick up your TSI examination form from the Counseling Center signed by an advisor Make your $29 payment in the Business Office located on the 2nd floor of Moody Hall All campus orientation sessions will be held in The Cheney Student Center, Seibel Wing. 8 NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION ONLINE Galveston College has created an online version of the New Student Orientation in an effort to better serve our students. Students must have applied to Admissions and received their GC student ID number before being able to reserve a space and complete the orientation. If you do not know your GC student ID number, please contact the Admissions Office for assistance. You can access and register for our session by going to our website, Under the heading Welcome Students you will see a subheading labeled Online new student orientation. By clicking the link, you will be able to register for a session. After receiving confirmation of registration, you will return to the same page to access the online session. 9 TESTING AND REGISTRATION REGISTRATION ALERT! Students may not register for classes until a Texas Success Initiative score or exemption is on file. Students may be required to take the new TSI Assessment test before enrolling in Galveston College. Students enrolling in Level One Certificates may be TSI exempt. Please contact an advisor for more information. TEXAS SUCCESS INITIATIVE The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requires students to demonstrate college readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics by meeting certain criteria. The criteria include minimum scores on one of the following tests: TAKS, SAT, ACT or TSI Assessment ; or prior completion of identified college courses with a grade of "C" or higher. Students who do not demonstrate college readiness in any or all areas will be required to enroll in the appropriate developmental course(s). Galveston College offers the TSI Assessment test to meet the Texas Success Initiative requirement. The test is available in the Learning Resources Center at Galveston College. Please contact the Counseling Center at (409) or the Testing Center at (409) for information on dates, times, and cost of the TSI Assessment test (valid picture I.D. REQUIRED for all testing). PLACEMENT TESTING Each credit course in the Galveston College Catalog (available on-line at has a required performance level in reading, writing, and/ or mathematics skills. The TSI Assessment test is used to determine placement in college level courses. Students who do not demonstrate the required performance level will be required to successfully complete the appropriate developmental course(s). All students who place into two or more developmental level courses are required to enroll in PSYC 1300 Learning Framework. 10 GALVESTON COLLEGE TESTING CENTER The mission of the Testing Center is to support and to provide a clean, fair, comfortable and safe testing environment for Galveston College students taking institutional exams as well as community members taking correspondence, state and national exams. The Testing Center is also equipped to provide computer generated and Web based exams. Unless otherwise indicated, pre-registration for an exam is in the Testing Center. 11 HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES Galveston College has implemented a new student information system Whitecaps Portal. This system provides students with immediate and ongoing information about programs and services available at the College as well as online access to their individual courses and program of study status. REGISTER USING YOUR WHITECAPS PORTAL New Students New students will be given access to the Whitecaps Portal for registration only after meeting with an advisor. Contact the Office of Admissions to verify that your records are complete. Prepare a draft class schedule to review with your Student Success Advisor, Faculty Advisor, or Program Coordinator. Follow the instructions listed to register online. Continuing Students Register using the Whitecaps Portal during scheduled registration periods. Follow the instructions listed below. (Continuing and former students should also check with the Office of Admissions to remove any registration holds before meeting with a Student Success Advisor, Faculty Advisor, or Program Coordinator.) Follow the instructions listed to register online. REGISTER ONLINE! The following instructions are provided to assist with registering online: 1 Go to 2 Click on Whitecaps Portal 3 For continuing students, enter your GC User ID and password (the password is the same as your current campus computer password) and click login. For new students, enter GC followed by your 7 digit student ID number and password (the password is defaulted to your date of birth mmddyy) and click login. 12 Please Note: The Whitecaps Portal will prohibit students from registering in courses when they have not completed the required prerequisite(s), lack the appropriate placement test score(s) and/or fail to enroll in the course co-requisite. Students are responsible for the development and accuracy of their class schedule. Enrollment is complete only when tuition and fees are paid. Please contact the cashier in the Business Office for other methods of payment. SCHEDULE CHANGES The WHITECAPS PORTAL is available for schedule changes during Early Registration and General Registration. Students who need to change their schedule (including adding or dropping a course) must contact a Counselor, Faculty Advisor, or Program Coordinator to have the change(s) approved during Late Registration. Some students may have restrictions on their ability to make changes. VETERANS BENEFITS PROGRAM The Financial Aid Office assists eligible student veterans and their dependents in obtaining veterans educational benefits in compliance with Veterans Administration procedures and regulations. To receive veterans benefits, students must be admitted to Galveston College, enroll in a degree-seeking or certificate-seeking program and apply for Veterans Educational Benefits. Current students should visit or contact the Financial Aid Office each semester after registering for classes to verify their eligibility of benefits. For more information regarding Veterans Administration education benefits, contact the Financial Aid Office at (409) SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT All United States citizens who are residents of Galveston Community College District who have attained the age of 65 years (65 and older) are eligible to receive a 100% tuition discount for credit courses, and a 50% discount for associated fees for credit courses (exceptions include individual music instruction, course fees, liability insurance, health fees, and testing fees). Tuition/fee adjustment requests for credit courses must be made at the time of registration. SENIOR CITIZEN - CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES All United States citizens who are residents of Galveston Community College District who have attained the age of 65 years (65 and older) are eligible to receive a 50% tuition discount for non-credit continuing education courses. 13 DEGREE AUDIT You may view your degree progress in your whitecaps portal. A degree audit is a computerized evaluation report that compares completed, in progress, and transfer coursework against program requirements. An audit report is generated that reflects coursework compared to requirements of a declared major at Galveston College. The audit is unofficial and should be used only as a tool to assist with planning future coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with a Counselor, Faculty Advisor or Program Coordinator when interpreting the report. New and continuing students can view their degree progress by following these instructions: 1. Log into your WHITECAPS PORTAL 2. Under Self Services, Select Academic Profile 3. Select Program Evaluation Follow the instructions on the screen. ACADEMIC FRESH START The "Right to an Academic Fresh Start" legislation, passed by the 73rd Texas Legislature, entitles residents of Texas under Texas Education Code to seek admission to public institutions of higher education as undergraduate students without consideration of courses undertaken ten or more years prior to enrollment. An applicant who chooses to pursue Academic Fresh Start must inform the Office of Admissions and submit a petition for Academic Fresh Start prior to the official census date of the first semester of attendance. The intent of the Fresh Start legislation is to provide students with an opportunity to have college-level work ten or more years old not be counted in their cumulative grade point average or hours earned. Students may not select which courses are to be counted and which are not. If Fresh Start is granted, all college hours ten or more years old will not be counted in the student s cumulative statistics. The courses will still be listed on the student s transcript with a notation of Fresh Start being granted. Academic Fresh Start does not apply to Financial Aid or VA benefits guidelines. If interested in seeking a Fresh Start, contact the Office of Admissions at (409) CARL PERKINS PROGRAMS Galveston College provides eligible students with limited financial assistance for child care through Carl Perkins funding. This program is offered on a first come, first served basis to qualifying individuals, as funding is available. Qualifying individuals must be seeking a certification or degree in a technical program and demonstrate financial need. Applications are available in the Counseling Center. New applications should be submitted to the Counseling Center before or by the following deadlines to assure that enrollment is complete prior to the start of classes. Returning applicants MUST submit a renewal application (with notations, if a schedule is not available) by the deadline. 14 SPECIAL SERVICES Registration assistance and academic support are available for students with disabilities and for special populations. For further information and to register for services, students should contact the Counseling Center in Moody Hall at (409) STUDENT ID CARDS All Galveston College students are required to possess and display a valid Galveston College Student Identification card. Students must present their payment receipt, showing their name and student identification number, and a valid picture ID before a student ID card will be issued. Students having a Galveston College ID card will be given a current semester sticker upon showing their payment receipt. The Galveston College student ID card is required for college services such as the Library, Computer Labs, Gym, the Student Success Center, and in the Testing Center. The initial ID card is issued at no cost to the student. Replacement ID cards are $5.00 each. Students can obtain their ID card at the IT Service Desk, room R-120. PARKING PERMITS All students, faculty, and staff at Galveston College are required to identify their motor vehicles on campus through the use of a Galveston College Parking Permit. Parking permits can be obtained anytime at no cost to the student with appropriate identification (driver s license) at the IT Service Desk in room R-120 by completing the appropriate form. For a complete listing of the Parking Rules and Regulations, go online to GALVESTON COLLEGE STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER The Student Success Center, located in N-119, provides free tutoring for any currently enrolled Galveston College student. Students must bring their college identification card (ID) to receive services such as: signingin and signing-out, accessing the internet and checking-out textbooks and laptops that are available for check out within the Center only. The College website ( contains many links to valuable resources on the world-wide web for each discipline and for study skills. The facility offers white boards for group studying and/or tutoring; it also offers sixteen computers designated for tutoring or virtual learning, and a positive learning environment. 14 Spring 2015 Credit Schedule

15 FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS FINANCIAL AID Financial aid eligibility must be determined by one of the following methods: 1 Apply for Financial Aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for Spring 2015 semester at 2 If a student has NOT received a Financial Aid Award Notification for aid year from Galveston College Financial Aid Office, the student must cover any balance that is owed and should contact the Business Office for payment options. 3 If a student has applied for financial aid and/or scholarships and has NOT received notification, the student may contact the Financial Aid Office to determine the status of their application. If a student's file is incomplete, the student will need to make payment arrangements at the time of registration from their own resources or set-up a FACTS payment plan with the Business Office. If Financial Aid is awarded during the semester, students will be reimbursed, if eligible. 4 If a student has not applied for financial aid: Tuition and fees must be paid from the student's own resources. An application packet may be picked up in the Financial Aid Office. Federal regulations mandate that financial aid eligibility must be recalculated for students who withdraw during the semester, and who receive AWN s for non-attendance. A portion of financial aid used for tuition, fees, books, and cash disbursements MAY HAVE TO BE REPAID by those students. Students who fail to make the proper arrangements for repayment will be reported to the federal data system. This will prevent students from receiving aid from any school they attend in the future. Please see the Financial Aid Office for additional information. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When is the priority date to apply for financial aid?.the priority date for applying for Financial Aid for Spring 2015 is November 17, Students may still apply after this date, but will have to pay for their tuition and fees. Aid may be awarded retroactively after classes begin. Will Financial Aid pay for my books? Textbooks may be charged to Pell grants, loans and other scholarships in the College Bookstore. First-time Universal Access recipients will receive a one-time $ book stipend. Can I get Financial Aid if I am a part-time student? Yes, in most cases. When are financial aid refund checks produced? Refund checks are produced 14 calendar days after financial aid funds have been disbursed to the student s account, which is February 17, 2015 for Spring All refund checks will be mailed to the address on file with the Admissions Office. What scholarships are available and how do I apply? Galveston College has scholarships available for students who fill-out applications, meet qualifications and are awarded through the scholarship committee. Galveston College offers several named scholarships for the Fall and Spring semesters. Contact the Financial Aid Office for details or visit the Financial Aid section of the college s website. 16 FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY FOR LATE AND SECOND START COURSES Register for Second Start before the census date of the long semester The tuition/fees and bookstore charges for students who register for 16 weeks courses and for Second Start or any class that starts after the census date of the long term, will be paid for by financial aid on the census date of the long semester. If the Second Start or (late starting course) is dropped by the student or cancelled by the administration before the start date of the course, the student is responsible for repaying any financial aid used to cover the charges incurred for the course. Register for Second Start after the Census Date of the Long Semester For students who register for Second Start courses only after the census of the long term, their financial aid will be packaged according to their hours enrolled. For students who are registered in a 16 weeks course(s) and who register for Second Start or any classes that starts after the census date of the long semester, the financial aid will be reassessed to accommodate the additional course hours for the Second Start course. UNIVERSAL ACCESS SCHOLARSHIPS Universal Access is a nationally recognized program that the community of Galveston created to provide education and training opportunities for its citizens. Since the Fall Semester of 2001, Universal Access Scholarships have ensured that every eligible graduate of a Galveston high school, home school program, and/or GED recipient has the opportunity to attend Galveston College to pursue a two year associate degree, take university transfer classes and/or receive technical training through a workforce development program. An applicant must be a resident of the Galveston College taxing district, as determined by the Admissions Office, for a minimum of 12 months prior to graduation or GED completion, and continue to be a resident of the Galveston College taxing district while enrolled at Galveston College and receiving Universal Access funds. SPRING 2015 CLASSES BEGIN JANUARY 20, 2015 SPRING REFUND POLICY (Credit Courses Only) Under the rules promulgated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Galveston College will refund tuition and applicable fees for withdrawals and dropped classes as scheduled below: 100% prior to January 20, % prior to 7:00 p.m. on February 9, % prior to 7:00 p.m. on February 16, 2015 NONE after 7:00 p.m. on February 16, 2015 The $30 registration fee is non-refundable at anytime. Student I.D. cards must be obtained by the 12th class day or there will be an additional $5 charge. 18 HOW TO PAY Students can pay on campus in the Business Office by check, cash or credit cards. Galveston College accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. The Business Office is located on the second floor of Moody Hall at 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas. In addition, students can pay online using FACTS-eCashier payment plans. To help you meet your educational expenses, we are pleased to offer FACTS as a convenient budget plan. It is not a loan; therefore you have no debt, there are no interest or finance charges assessed and there is no credit check. The cost to budget monthly payments is a $25.00 per semester nonrefundable fee. Please remember, full payments are deducted immediately! The FACTS Enrollment Fee is automatically deducted from your account WITHIN 14 days of your agreement being posted to the FACTS system. The fact is, few of us have the resources to simply write a check for the full cost of tuition each semester. So how are you meeting your costs? What s your plan? Do you have one? Having a solid plan for covering the cost of college is an important step toward graduation. Galveston College is pleased to enlist the services of FACTS to make the process easier for you. Working together, Galveston College and FACTS will provide you with sensible strategies for covering the rising costs of college. Here is a Proven Plan To help you meet your educational expenses, Galveston College is proud to offer FACTS as a convenient budget plan. This is not a loan program. You have no debt, there are no interest or finance charges assessed, and there is no credit check. The cost to budget your interest-free monthly payment plan is a $25.00 per semester nonrefundable FACTS Enrollment Fee. You may budget your tuition and fees in the following ways: A. Automatic Bank Payment (ACH) ACH payments are those payments you have authorized FACTS to process directly with your financial institution. It is simply a bank-to-bank transfer of funds that you have pre-approved for your expenses at Galveston College. Payments may be made from either your checking or savings account. Payments are processed on the 5th of each month and will continue until the balance is paid in full. B. Credit Card Option Paying with your credit card gives you the option of taking advantage of any bonus programs that may be offered by your credit card company. 20 TUITION RESIDENCY CLASSIFICATION: 1. A student is considered a Texas Resident - In-District resident if he/she has resided in the College taxing district for at least 12 months prior to the student's first registration at Galveston College for other than educational purposes. 2. A student is considered a Texas Resident - Out-Of-District resident if he/she has resided in the State of Texas for at least 12 months prior to the student's first registration at Galveston College for other than educational purposes and is not a resident of the College s taxing district. 3. A student is considered an Out-Of-State/Non-Resident student if he/she has NOT resided in the State of Texas for at least 12 months prior to the student's first registration at Galveston College for other than educational purposes. The Board of Regents of Galveston College has authorized the waiver of the difference in the rate of tuition for nonresident and resident students for a person, or his or her dependents, who owns property which is subject to ad valorem taxation by the Galveston College District. The person, or his or her dependents, applying for such a waiver shall verify property ownership by presentation of an ad valorem tax statement or receipt, issued by the tax office of the Galveston College District, or by presentation of a deed, property closing statement, or other appropriate evidence of ownership of property which is subject to ad valorem taxation by the Galveston College District. The responsibility of enrolling in courses under the proper residence classification is that of the student. If there is any question regarding the student's correct residency classification, it is the responsibility of the student to discuss this matter with the Registrar/Director of Admissions. Changes to tuition residency classification must be approved In-District Tuition/ Fees Wavier Request Must Be Submitted Prior to or at the time of Registration. CONCURRENT INSTITUTIONAL ENROLLMENT TUITION ADJUSTMENT When a student registers at more than one public institution of higher education at the same time (i.e., enrolled at Texas A&M at Galveston and Galveston College or UTMB and Galveston College), the student may be eligible for a reduction in tuition. This adjustment will be in accordance with Section of the Education Code which establishes, in essence, that once a student has enrolled at one public institution, and paid the required minimum tuition, he/she will be charged tuition at the credit rate only when enrolling at a second public institution, and will not have to pay the minimum tuition charge a second time. In order to qualify, the student must bring a copy of their receipt for payment of tuition from the institution in which enrollment was first made by the 12th class day (for Fall and Spring semesters) or at the time of payment at Galveston College. TEXAS TUITION WAIVER The student must bring the required information to qualify for the waiver (Texas Education Code 54) to the Admissions Office by the census date for the term (varies by term). Waiver information received after the census date will not take effect until the following semester. RETURNED CHECKS All returned checks will be assessed a thirty-five dollar ($35.00) handling fee. Upon receiving a returned check, the Business Office will place a "hold" on the student's record. A certified letter will be sent to the individual whose check is returned. This letter will set a final date for settlement of this returned check. After this date, the returned check will be sent to the District Attorney's office for legal action. STOP PAYMENT FEE: Checks that are reissued as a result of being lost due to mishandling, mutilation, or incorrect address will result in a $10 stop pay reissuance fee. 20 Spring 2015 Credit Schedule
