We work closely staff members to help achieve these goals. We feel we can make a difference, by taking an active role in the school to help contribute to the success of all students. DAILY SCHEDULE 7:50 - Supervision begins 8:05 - Start time 10:05 - Recess 11:40 - Lunch 2:20 - Recess 2:35 - Dismissal bell Code of Conduct The purposes of the Provincial Code, set out in Section 301(2)of the Education Act are: 1. To ensure that all members of the school community, especially people in positions of authority, are treated with respect and dignity. 2. To promote responsible citizenship by encouraging appropriate participation in the civic life of the school community. 3. To maintain an environment where conflict and difference can be addressed in a manner characterized by respect and civility. 4. To encourage the use of non-violent means to resolve conflict. 5. To promote the safety of people in the schools. 6. To discourage the use of alcohol and illegal drugs.

4 Application of Standards of Behaviour The school standards of behaviour apply to all members of the school community, students, parents/guardians, volunteers, teachers, other staff members, superintendents, senior board staff, board personnel, trustees and others who may be present at schools or school related events under the jurisdiction of the ALCDSB. We All Have a Role to Play All members of the school community are to treat others with dignity, respect, equity, forgiveness and compassion as Jesus would reflect. It is expected that all members would demonstrate honesty, integrity, help those in need, use appropriate language when addressing another person and treat others fairly. Parents, play an important role in the education of their children and can support the efforts of the school. This should include, regular communication through the agenda, notes or by phone, preparation for school, encouraging their child to follow the school rules, support with any disciplinary issues involving their child. Students, need to become responsible and accountable for their own behaviours. They will not disturb classes, run in the hallways, vandalize, eat or drink in unauthorized areas, litter or be out of the classroom at any time without permission. It is expected that students come to school prepared, on time and ready to learn and follow the established school rules. Safe Arrival WE BELIEVE THAT EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS. Buzz Entry: All parents/guardians or visitors are to report to the office to confirm the reason for their visit before proceeding to any other part of the school building. Any late students must immediately report to the office. Visitors should refrain from entering the school yard during the school day for the safety of all children. Attendance/Absences: It is the parents/guardians responsibility to ensure that their children attend school and inform the school if their child is going to be absent. All absences should be reported to the office. (Attendance line: , available 24 hours a day). Leaving the School: Only legal parents/guardians can give permission to leave the school (i.e. appointments, lunch, vacations or other). Leaving school without permission will result in disciplinary action. Students must have a note of permission to leave the school. Supervision: supervision begins at 7:50 a.m. and our school day ends at 2:35 p.m. Drop off: Please exercise caution when dropping off/picking up your children in the morning/afternoon. The loading and unloading zone must remain clear. Please DO NOT park in the staff parking lot due to congestion and for safety reasons. Unless you have a permit, please refrain from parking in our handicapped spots. Students/parents are expected to walk their bikes on and off school grounds. Dismissal: Students who walk home are expected to exit the school using the proper doors/walkways and proceed directly home. Parents are to pick up students in the designated areas outside. Please avoid bus lines and loading zone. Bussing: Transportation is a privilege. Students are expected to behave appropriately in bus lines and while on the bus. Parents may be expected to pick up their child if rules are not followed. Students taking the bus are to line up in their designated areas and wait to be loaded by a staff member. No student shall ride another bus unless given written consent from the parent/guardian/office. While on the bus, students will follow all rules as outlined by TriBoard transportation. Please see: _Guidelines_ for_students_parents_and%20schools.pdf Illness/Injury When a child is ill, the best place for him/her is usually at home. Should your child become ill during the school day we will endeavor to contact the parent/guardian. In the case of a contagious disease (e.g. measles, fifths, chicken pox, scarlet fever) the Health Unit must also be notified. Parents/guardians are asked to please notify the school of any cases of pediculosis (i.e. head lice), scabies or pink eye in order to prevent the rapid spread of cases. In the case of an injury at school, appropriate first aid will be administered. If the injury appears more serious, the parent/guardian or the emergency person will be contacted. Please keep all contact information up to date. Storage and Dispensing of Medication Please administer non-prescription medication at home. In rare cases, if medication needs to be given at school, it will be stored in the office in its original packaging and only dispensed in accordance to physician/parent instructions. Medication will only be dispensed by administration. Please be aware that in order to do so, the completion of a Medical Information and Consent Form must be signed by the parent and doctor.
5 Allergies/Medical Conditions Food/environmental allergies or any medical conditions (e.g., seizures, syndromes etc.), need to be reported to the school. Parents should provide specifics. We rely on information from the parent/guardian to make us aware of your child s allergies and to provide any necessary alerts and/or medications. Clothing It is expected that students will dress in a manner that reflects modesty, decency and respect for self and others. The discretion of the Administration will prevail and be final in all issues involving the appropriateness of student appearance and attire. Should straps should be 2 fingers wide. Backs and midriffs should be covered. Shorts/skirts should be longer than arms extended at one s side. Slogans/logos on clothing needs to be respectful (not depict violence, racism, messages contrary to the values of the school). Hats are to be removed upon entrance into the school. For safety reasons items such as pocket chains, studded items, neck chains should not be worn. Students/parents are expected to come dressed in attire appropriately for the season. Appropriate inside footwear is to be changed into and worn at school, including shoes for gym. Participation in Extra-Curricular Activities It is a privilege to represent St. Mary Catholic School. The expectation is that we will show respect at all times when representing the school. A student must be making every effort to succeed in his/her subjects. Chronic absenteeism/lates could result in a student being denied the opportunity to participate. If a student athlete quits a team or activity without good reason, this may be taken into consideration for future involvement. Personal Items/Electronics Students should only bring to school items that are related to instruction. Items not approved by the Principal or classroom teacher will be taken and parents will be contacted. Cellular phones or other electronic devices must be POWERED OFF during regular school hours unless authorized by a teacher. It is not recommended that students bring electronic devices to school. THE SCHOOL ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS. Any inappropriate/unauthorized use of electronics at school (texting, , photos, posts etc.) will be reported to the teacher or administrator immediately. Progressive Discipline Progressive discipline is whole-school approach that utilizes a continuum of interventions, supports, and consequences to address inappropriate student behaviour and to build upon strategies that promote positive attitudes and behaviours. When inappropriate behaviour occurs, disciplinary measures should be applied within a framework that shifts the focus from one that is solely punitive to a focus that is both corrective and supportive. Suspension/Expulsion The progressive discipline continuum is a stepped approach to support a positive change in behaviour. However, if an incident is serious in nature and after a full consideration of circumstances affecting a student s behaviour, it is recognized that a step, such as a suspension or expulsion, may be necessary. In considering whether to suspend a pupil or whether to recommend to the Board that a pupil be expelled, a principal will take into account any mitigating factors or other factors prescribed by the regulations. Safety Vandalism: is considered anything that causes extensive damage to school property or to property located on the premises of the school. Bodily Harm: is the use of the body (e.g. arms, hands, legs etc.) to inflict or encourage bodily harm on another person; or use an object/weapon to threaten or intimidate. St. Mary Catholic School is a hands off policy school. Threat: is an expression of intent to do harm or act out violently against someone or something. Threats may be verbal, written, drawn, posted on the Internet or made by gesture. Threats will be taken seriously, investigated and responded to. Please see the letter of Fair Notice posted at pdf Bullying (Board Policy S ): This is an aggressive and typically repeated behaviour by a pupil, where, (a) the behaviour is intended by the pupil to have the effect of, or the pupil ought to know that the behaviour would be likely to have the effect of, (i) causing harm, fear or distress to another individual, including physical, psychological, social or academic harm, harm to the individual s reputation or harm to the individual s property, or (ii) creating a negative environment at a school for another individual, and (b) the behaviour occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power of imbalance between the people and the individual based on factors such as size, strength, age, intelligence, peer group power, economic status, social
6 status, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, family circumstances, gender, gender identity, gender expression, race, disability or with receipt of special education ( intimidation ). For the purposes of the definition of bullying above, behaviour includes the use of any physical, verbal, electronic, written or other means. Cyberbullying: This is bullying by electronic means. This includes (a) creating a webpage or a blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person; (b) impersonating another person as the author of content or messages posted on the internet; and (c) communicating material electronically. Supporting Positive Student Behavior Programs exist, such as bullying prevention and citizenship development, as well as positive activities designed to promote the building of healthy relationships and appropriate behaviour, and building on existing curricula, particularly the Religious Education and Family Life program, and the faith life of the school community (e.g. liturgies, retreats, sacramental celebrations, restorative justice practices). We will encourage and support students to develop leadership in such programs (e.g. peer mentoring, restorative practice, conflict mediation). We will focus on prevention and early intervention as a key to maintaining a positive school environment in which students can learn. We will utilize prevention measures and initiatives that include the whole school and all aspects of school life. All students will have the opportunity to participate in bullying prevention training and leadership initiatives within their own school. Intervention Strategies: Intervention to stop bullying is a community responsibility including school administrators, teachers, staff members, parents/guardians, students, Board professional staff, the local Church and community agencies.
