1 MARK CARR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Mark Carr Scholarship Award honors the memory of Mark Carr who was the former Fire Chief of New Britain, CT. He was dedicated to bringing a high level of competence to the New Britain Fire Department through training, continuous education and fostering community spirit. Prior to his passing in August 2014, Mark Carr worked in the Homeland Security sector in Washington, DC where he was responsible for overseeing disaster preparedness, response and security for the nation. The Mark Carr Scholarship Award has been created to continue the legacy of public service that defined his life. He had a passion for continuous learning and so this award will assist especially those persons who are interested in pursuing education to eventually work in the public sector in the field of homeland security, emergency management or fire sciences. New Britain High School: The scholarship award aims to foster and support the education of students at New Britain high school who have an interest in working in the public service sector. Applicants must be enrolled or participating in the Introduction to Firefighting Program. Applicants must meet all of the following Scholarship Eligibility Criteria as of the application deadline date. Scholarship Eligibility Criteria: Any student who is enrolled or participating in the Introduction to Firefighting Program. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point above 2.0. A 500-word essay indicating how this program will help the applicant in their desired field of study and where they are planning to further their educational studies. Preference going to a student who wishes to pursue a career as a first responder or in military service. Funds must be used for educational purposes. Scholarship Application Process: Applicant must provide the following on or before the application deadline. No late or incomplete submissions will be considered. Confirmation letter that you have enrolled or currently participating in the Introduction to Firefighting Program from the Course Instructor. Last report card showing your current grade point average. One letter of reference attesting to the applicant's character and academic ability. Letters of reference must indicate the relationship between the reference and the applicant and may not be submitted by immediate family member. A completed application form. Application forms will be available and accepted from March 1, 2015 to April 2, This selection panel will be comprised of the Scholarship Committee and a Representative from the Mark Carr Scholarship Award Committee. The Selected awardee(s) will be notified in writing by the Scholarship Committee as soon as the selection process is complete. 1
