1 3 Minutes-3 Steps to better PAT Testing The easiest, cheapest, and most effective way to take care of your business s PAT Testing. Tick all those health and safety boxes, and save yourself time and money while you re at it! You don t need any previous knowledge, or have had any electrical training. All you need is one of our kits, this guide, and well that s it! There are 3 basic steps you need to follow to test your appliances, and we ll go through them in this guide. But first I bet you want to know why on earth you d want to do your own PAT testing. It s something you need an expert for It s far too complicated for me to learn how to do Surely it won t be up to industry standards if I do it myself? These are all phrases I hear a lot at Parker Bell. But they are all wrong. In fact, testing your appliances yourself is so easy and quick to do, and you don t need an expert to meet health and safety guidelines.

2 Need more persuading? Testing your appliances yourself means that you never need to disrupt your employees or visitors at inconvenient times. You don t have to wait for your current PAT Testing company to be free. It works out much more cost effective, there s just one payment for the machine. Once bought, the tester kit won t need to be replaced. It will just need to be calibrated (tested) once a year The tests meet the industry health and safety guidelines and you don t need an electrician to comply with the guidelines either! You don t need any previous knowledge or electrical skill. It s so easy to use. If you don t believe me, I ve even put together a really easy flowchart - Take a look at the back of this report!

4 Testing your appliance Okay, so I ve promised you that it s really easy to PAT Test yourself. I ve told you that it s really quick and you don t need any past knowledge, now s my time to prove it to you Here are the 3 simple steps that you need to follow, to PAT Test any appliance. And I promise you, it won t take you longer than 3 minutes! Find out what type of appliance you have Class 1 - It will have a lead with 3 wires (An Earth, Live, and Neutral) Class 2 - It will have a double insulated symbol (a square within a square) and just a neutral and a live wire. An IEC Lead An Extension Lead A Mains Outlet Perform a visual test on your appliance. Look for loose wires, insecure fuses, and damaged plugs or pins. Then make a note of your findings. Next carry out the practical test. You ll need to plug the jack of the test lead in to the top of the test kit and put the plug of the appliance into the socket on the test kit. The appliance will either be a pass or a fail. See? Simple and less 3 minutes long. (Actually, I bet it was more like 2.) 5 1. What type of appliance are you trying to test? Class I An earthed appliance. It will have a lead and a plug and 3 wires: an Earth, a Live and a Neutral. Class II These appliances will have a double-insulated (square within a square) symbol on the manufacturer s label. A lead will have 2 wires; a live and a neutral. Cord An IEC lead, which connects an appliance to a power source and is detachable. Extension Lead Mains Power Outlet 2. Whichever appliance or lead you are testing, you will need to do a visual inspection first! Is the plug suitable? Is the flexible lead secure at the anchorage grip? Has a non-moulded plug been correctly wired? Are there any loose strands of wire? Does the fuse conform and is it secure? Straighten any tightly bent cable Remove any paper wiring diagram that might have been placed over the pins New plugs must have a sleeve on the live and neutral pins. Are the wires securely attached to the correct terminals? Extension leads should be used on a temporary basis. Install a new socket-outlet nearer the appliance. Failed the Inspection! Place a Fail label on the appliance and update the test records register then remove it from service until its been repaired. Repaired! Passed the Inspection! Update the test records register Class I Insert the round jack of the earth test lead into the top of the PAT tester and, using either the probe or the crocodile clip, connect it to an external earth point on the appliance. Insert the plug of the appliance into the socket on the front of the PAT tester. Class II Insert the plug of the appliance into the socket on the front of the PAT tester. Make sure the appliance power switch is in the On position and press the Class II button. Cord Insert the socket of an IEC lead into the IEC plug located on the top of the PAT tester, and its plug into the socket on the front of the PAT tester. Extension Lead Insert the socket of the supplied IEC lead into the IEC plug located on the top of the PAT Tester. Insert the plug of the IEC lead into the first or only socket of the extension lead and insert the plug of the extension lead into the socket of the PAT tester. Mains Power Outlet Insert the socket of the supplied and designated IEC leadinto the IEC plug located on the top of the PAT tester. Make sure the appliance power switch is in the On position and press the Class I button. Class I Lo Load is displayed when the appliance power switch is in the Off position, or the appliance does not have a switch. Turn the switch to the On position or If it doesn t have a switch, press the Class I button again to continue the test sequence. Class II Lo Load is displayed when the appliance has not been plugged into the socket on the PAT tester, or the appliance power switch is in the Off position, or the appliance does not have a switch. Plug in the appliance, or turn the switch to the On position, or If it doesn t have a switch, press the Class II button again to continue the test sequence. Press the Cord button. Press the Cord button. Repeat the test for any other sockets on the extension lead. If surge-protected, read the instruction manual. Insert the plug of the IEC lead into the mains power outlet, and switch the socket on. PASS - Place a Pass label on the appliance or cord and update the test records register. FAIL - Place a Fail label on the appliance or cord and remove from service. Have it repaired or replaced. Watch the training DVD or read the instruction manual for further guidance on exceptions, long leads and surge-protection.

6 As a senior site Manager for Kier Western (the trading name at that time) I purchased the PB500 from yourselves through our buying department in Plymouth in July I and several of my foreman used that machine and also lent it to other sites until gradually the purchased their own. We found this to be an extremely easy machine to use (after watching the DVD supplied with the machine) and then training each other, I used it on my sites until December 2011 when I retired. The machine is still with one of my foreman and was recalibrated again recently. I found over the years that recalibration was as efficient as can be, with pre addressed packaging supplied by yourselves. It was returned to us in a few days with no problems. I would imagine that this exercise will be repeated for several years yet.
