3 CORAL REEF WEBQUEST Introduction A webquest is a learning activity that lets students use the Internet to research answers to questions. This webquest will help you learn more about coral reefs, what their value is, why they are in danger, and what you can do to help save them. 1 What are coral and what is a coral reef? How to Identify Reliable Web Resources Anyone can publish information on the web. That may be great for personal expression but it makes doing valid academic research a lot harder! So how can you tell a reliable web resource from an unreliable one? Here s a quick checklist: What is the website s domain name? Does the information seem accurate? There are little clues that can indicate the accuracy of a website. Does the website cite other reputable sources? Can you verify the information through another source? Does the author make any bias they might have about the topic clear? 2 3 What do coral reefs need to survive? What percentage of marine life live in coral reefs? A webpage s domain name (or Internet address) is the link you use to open the website. For example, The Reef Project s domain name is org. Looking at a website s domain name can help you decode the mission of the website s owners. Information found on government, educational and non-profit websites are usually (but not always) more reliable than personal or business websites. Check for these letters in a website domain name for clues:.org: Sometimes indicates an advocacy web site, such as a not-for-profit organization..com: Could be a business, commercial or individual s site..edu: A site affiliated with a higher education institution..gov: A federal government site. Is the information current? Out of date websites often have out of date information. Check for a date when the webpage was updated or for a current copyright year in the footer of the webpage (at the very bottom of the page). Citing Your Web Resources Anytime you are doing research, you want to give credit where it is due. If you are quoting a website word-for-word, make sure to put it in quotes and name your source. If you are paraphrasing or rewording information you find online, you do not need to put it in quotes, but you still need to indicate where you found that information. Rearranging a few words someone else said or wrote does not make a thought your own. Whenever you cite information from a website, make sure to include: 4 What is ocean acidification? Learn More About Web Research Author and/or editor names. Article name in quotation marks. Title of the Website in italics. web-eval-sites.htm Date you accessed the material. Website link. 5 What are 5 easy steps to help save coral reefs? howdoi/webeval.html how-can-my-students-know- if-a-web-source-is-reliable/ 2 3
4 GREAT BARRIER REEF UNDERWATER SCENE Introduction Before you start, it s fun to research pictures of the Great Barrier Reef online to get ideas for different corals, plants and creatures you can add to your scene. And don t forget to only use recycled materials for your project. Reduce, Reuse Recycle! Step 1: Paint the Main Scene Gather everything you will need & begin by painting your egg cartons. We used white and blue paint on one to represent water, and mixed blue, yellow, white and metallic green paint on the other for the reef. Allow to dry. Materials Needed Egg cartons Skewers (or craft sticks for littler kids) Paint (we used Acrylic & Metallic Paint) Regular Pipe Cleaners Wavy Pipe Cleaners Craft Foam 3D Paint Craft Glue Scissors Markers Tape The Great Ba Clown Fish Characterized by its orange and white coloring, the Clown Fish to Anemone-fish is one of the most recognizable reef-dwellers. These clever fish have a mucus coating on their skin that makes them immune to an anemone s lethal sting. Step 2: Decorate Your Sea Floor Once dry, use 3D Paint to decorate your scene and make it more interesting. While you ve got the 3D paint out, cut out some shapes from craft foam and decorate for the Plate Coral. Step 3: Make Reef Coral, Plants & Creatures Now for the really fun part! Cut out different shapes of pipe cleaners for Anenome Coral and Soft Coral. Step 4: Complete Your Coral Reef When dry, glue your Coral Plates to your reef. Ask an adult for some help to make holes in the reef and water egg cartons using skewers, and attach your pipe cleaner corals to the reef too. Make sure to leave some free holes for your Reef creatures! 4 Moorish Idol The Moorish Idol is a beautiful tropical species that has a very long, white dorsal fin. It is sometimes seen as a single individual, but often forms pairs and occasionally larger schools. Green Green Turtle The green turtle s The smooth, green tur high-domed high-domed shell is mottled s olive green, green, brown brown and black, species but the actua species actually the gets colour its name of for the shell color length of its offat. Step 5: Decorate Your Creatures Color in the creatures and cut them out. If you re feeling very arty you could even draw some of your own! Fold them along the top line in half. Ask an adult to help you cut some skewers to various sizes, and glue to the top of skewers of craft sticks. Great Barrier Reef Underwater Scene. Micador. Web. 02 Apr
