1 Activities Nursery to Class III For Nursery Activity related to letter/sound A Materials required: 10 flash cards with A or a written and 10 flash cards with other letters. Take 10 flash cards of A or a. Scatter them on the floor along with the 10 other flash cards. Ask children to take off their shoes. Explain to them that they have to pick up only that letter that makes the a sound and not step on any card. They must say the sound as they step onto a new card. Let them take turns to do that. This activity helps in reinforcing recognition and sound of the letter A. The formation of the letter is imbedded in his/her mind. The child can also correlate two things. His/her attention span, concentration, eye foot discrimination, gross motor movement, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is enhanced. They also learn to follow instructions and take turns. Activity related to letter/sound Ff Materials required: Objects or pictures beginning with Ff sound and a small bag. Scatter plenty of objects/pictures beginning with the sound Ff like fork, feather, flower, fish, football, fox, frog, fan etc. Add some other objects/pictures as well. Give the child a small bag that he/she can comfortably carry. Ask him/her to pick up all the objects/pictures that begin with Ff sound. Let him say the sound as he/she picks up the object/picture. Guide them to take turns. This activity helps in reinforcing the sound and the recognition of the objects beginning with the letter F. The child can also correlate the two things. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand coordination, cognitive skills, thinking ability, auditory-visual discrimination, gross and fine motor movement, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is enhanced. They also learn to follow instructions and take turns. 1
2 For Kg Activity related to 3 letter words Materials required: Four flash cards each of all the letters of the alphabet and three ice cream spoons Put the letters ba on the table and place three spoons in front of them in the following manner: ba Give the child some letters and ask him/her to complete the words, e.g. t, n, g will make bat, ban and bag. Help them to say the sound as they place the letters. The child should put t, n and g in front of the ice cream spoons and then make the whole word as well. _t bat ba n ban g bag Here the advantage for the children is that words, sound and spellings are being reinforced. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand capability and grasping capacity is developed. They also learn to follow instructions. Activity related to rhyming words Material required: Flash cards with different words printed on them; words that can form different sentences. Spread all the words on a table and ask a child to make different sentences with those words. If you have the words is, it, a, hot, day, the child can make It is a hot day. or Is it a hot day?. Start with short sentences like A fat cat. Then slowly graduate to longer ones. At this point children will learn the art of forming different sentences. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand coordination, thinking ability, auditory-visual discrimination, fine motor movement, reading ability, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is widening. 2
3 For Class 1 Activity related to This and That Material required: Some objects or pictures (1 of each is fine) Keep some objects near the child and some a little away. Tell the child that the objects/pictures near him/her are referred to as This and the ones far are pointed to as That. Ask him/her to say This is a pen. or This is a box. Hold each object/picture near him/her. Then ask him/her to point at the objects/pictures far away and say That is a pencil. or That is a book. Now point at any object and ask him/her to tell you what it is. With this activity, the concept of This and That will be clear and the children will learn the art of forming a sentence. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand coordination, cognitive skills, thinking ability, auditory-visual discrimination, fine motor movement, reading ability, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is widening. They also learn to follow instructions and take turns. Activity related to action words Materials required: 10 pictures of children performing an action and the action word written down. Show a child all the pictures and invite him/her to identify the action. Then ask him/her to match it to the spelling. Or you can arrange all the pictures in a row, give words to the child and ask him/her to match. Here the advantage for children is that actions and their spellings are being reinforced. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand capability and grasping capacity is being developed. They also learn to follow instructions and take turns. 3
4 Class II Activity related to Two words in one Materials required: Cut outs of words divided into two separate words like sun and flower or bed and sheet. They can be cut out in a puzzle form where only two words can fit in and pictures of the words formed. Explain the activity to children; show them how two words can be joined to form one word. Or how one word can be divided into two words. Encourage a child to start joining and making words. Then they can match the picture to the words. Guide them to say the word or read it while they are performing the activity. This activity helps in reinforcing that two words can be joined to make one or one word can be at times, divided to form two words. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand coordination, cognitive skills, thinking ability, auditory-visual discrimination, gross and fine motor movement, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is enhanced. They also learn to understand commands and take turns. Activity related to animals and their actions Materials required: Animal flashcards and spellings/words of the action the animals perform like run, leap etc. Spread out the animal pictures on one side and the words on the other. Ask the children to pair them. Some actions might be similar e.g. both dogs and rabbits hop. Persuade children to read the card they pick up, even say the name of the animal whose picture they pick up. This activity helps in reinforcing the actions of the animals. The actions and their names are also imbedded in his/her mind. The child can also correlate two things. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand capability and grasping capacity is enhanced. They also learn to understand commands and take turns. 4
5 Class III Activity related to Double vowel sound words Materials required: Flash cards of words with double vowel sound like cheek, beat, thread, goat, say, book, room etc. Have at least 4 cards of each group. Encourage children to make groups according to the sound. Remind them that some similar looking words make totally different sound like book and room. Hence they should make the groups very carefully. This activity helps in reinforcing the pronunciation of words. The children realize that they have to round their mouth in a particular fashion to make the exact sound. The child can then correlate two things, the sound and formation. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand coordination, cognitive skills, thinking ability, pronunciation, acoustic skills, auditoryvisual discrimination, observation skill, decision making capability and grasping capacity is enhanced. They also learn to comprehend commands and take turns. Activity related to noun, verb and adjective Materials required: 10 flash cards of nouns like name, place or thing. 10 flash cards of verbs like dancing, singing etc. 10 flash cards of adjectives like pretty, clean etc. Headings Noun, Verb, Adjective Mix up the cards. Place the headings on a table. Now ask a child to arrange the cards under appropriate headings. Guide them to read the words loudly before placing them in the column. This activity can be done with 3 to 5 children together also. Let them take turns to pick up one card and put it in the right column. Here the advantage for the children is that nouns, verbs, adjectives and their spellings are being reinforced. His/her attention span, concentration, eye hand discrimination, fine motor movement, observation skill, pronunciation, acoustic skills, decision making capability and grasping capacity is being developed. They also learn to comprehend instructions and work in turns. 5
