1 Reading Comprehension Strategy: Making Connections Grade: Grade 2 Subject and Topic: Whole Group Reading (Making Connections) a) Use oral language for different purposes: to inform and to respond. d) Retell information shared by others. i) Draw conclusions based on the text. Objective(s): Students will make connections to the other students in the class by identifying the similarities they have. This will be a foundation to the introduction of making connections as a reading comprehension strategy. Students will develop a greater sense of community by finding things in common with their classmates. Materials: teacher made power point on making connections Instructional Activities: 1. The teacher will ask students to talk with the people at their table to find one thing that they all have in common. Students will share with the whole class. 2. The teacher will play instrumental music. Students will stand behind their chairs. The teacher will explain that students that they are to walk or dance around the classroom shaking hands while the music is playing. When the music stops, they are to find a person and link elbows to connect. Then they need to find something that they have in common with that person. 3. The teacher will ask a few pairs to share what they have in common. The students will continue to do this until everyone has been partners at least once. 4. The teacher will introduce making connections as a reading comprehension strategy through use of a power point. 5. The teacher will have students to apply the new strategy after the daily read aloud. Assessment: The teacher will be able to see if students apply the strategy correctly during the read aloud period.

The teacher will model by explaining the strategy, demonstrating how to apply the strategy successfully, and thinking aloud to model the mental processes being used during reading. 2. The teacher and students will practice making connections together after reading pages Students will write the following sentence prompt on their white boards: When happened, it reminded me of. 4. Students will read the rest of the story. 5. As they read, students will complete their sentence prompt. 6. At the end of the story, students will share their connections and explain why they made the connection. This connection helped me understand the story better Assessment: The white board activity will be used to assess student understanding of making connections as a reading comprehension strategy. Differentiation: Students are put into reading groups based on reading ability. This lesson uses scaffolding. 4 Subject: Reading Group One Objective(s): The teacher will model a reading comprehension strategy, making connections. Students will make connections to the text. Materials: The Long Way to a New Land by Joan Sandin, 7 white boards, 7 dry erase markers 1. The teacher will model by explaining the strategy, demonstrating how to apply the strategy successfully, and thinking aloud to model the mental processes being used during reading. 2. The teacher and students will practice making connections together by referring to pages in the text that were read during the last session. 3. Students will write the following sentence prompt on their white boards: When happened, it reminded me of. 4. Students will read chapter two. 5. As they read, students will complete their sentence prompt. 6. At the end of the chapter, students will share their connections and explain why they made the connection. This connection helped me understand the story better Assessment: The white board activity will be used to assess student understanding of making connections as a reading comprehension strategy. Differentiation: This lesson can be categorized under small group by ability on the McEachron, 2014 differentiation chart. 5 Subject: Reading Group Three Objective(s): The teacher will introduce a reading comprehension strategy, making connections. Students will make personal connections to the text. Materials: Going Places, 7 connections activity sheets 1. The teacher will model by explaining the strategy, demonstrating how to apply the strategy successfully, and thinking aloud to model the mental processes being used during reading. 2. The teacher and students will practice making connections together after reading the first two pages. 3. Students will take turns reading the rest of the story. The teacher will tell students to link their fingers together when they read something that they can make a connection to. 4. At the end of the story, students will share their connections and explain why they made the connection. 5. Students will complete a connection worksheet using one of the connections they made. They will write the connection, draw a sketch, and explain how the connection helped them to understand the story better. Assessment: The oral discussion activity and the worksheet will be used to assess student understanding of making connections as a reading comprehension strategy. Differentiation: Students are put into reading groups based on reading ability. This lesson uses scaffolding. Materials: The Long Way to a New Land by Joan Sandin 1. The teacher will explain the following steps to the students then students will complete the activities at their desks. 2. Students will individually read chapter After reading chapter 3, students will think of ways they are similar to the main character. Students will make a list of the ways they are similar to the main character. 4. Using the list they composed, students will write a paragraph about how they are similar to the main character. Assessment: The paragraphs that the students write will be a summative assessment. Differentiation: Students are put into reading groups based on reading ability. This lesson is self-paced.
