2 What Should your Child Know Before starting Kindergarten? This is a list of skills your child should have mastered before starting Kindergarten this August. When students come to school prepared with these skills, your child s teacher will be able to spend the time teaching the essential curriculum instead of reteaching basic skills or correcting behavior. Write his/her first and last name Identify all 26 letters (uppercase and lowercase) Write all 26 letters (uppercase and lowercase) Know all the letter sounds Write numbers 0-20 Count up to 20 Know how to use a glue stick Know how to use scissors Know how to tie his/her shoes Play well with others Be able to tuck in shirts, button pants and buckle belts Know how to take care of him/herself in the bathroom Know how to sit in a chair for extended periods of time Knows how to raise a hand and not shout out Understands what it means to take care of classroom supplies (do not break crayons or glop on too much glue) Open snack containers and bags

3 What is first Sound fluency? First sound fluency is the ability to hear and say the first sound in a word. For example, the child would be told, I am going to say a word. You tell me the first sound you hear in the word. We would then read a word and the child would respond with the first sound of the word. First sound fluency practice Play I Spy to find things that start with a specific sound. I spy something that starts with the sound /s/. Grab some items found around the house and sort them by initial sound. Using the picture cards in this pack, ask what do you see in this picture? This is an important question because children may not know what is in the picture or may be thinking of a different name for the picture. Then ask, what is the first sound you hear in the word?

When x is at the beginning of the word, it often makes a /z/ sound, as in xylophone. When found at the end of the word, like box, it makes a /ks/ sound. You will find two picture cards for the letter x to help you.
