4 CLEARS GRADE GRADED TO THE BEST FACE AND TWO EDGES Specifications Clears grade timber on both faces & edges. Permitted defects: One gum streak 5mm wide x 100mm long Up to three surface checks 0.5mm wide x 50mm long, cup as given in Table 3. CLEARS GRADE GRADED TO THE BEST FACE AND TWO EDGES Specifications Clears grade timber on the best face of the board and two edges as described in Clears Grade cup, bow, crook and twist as given in tables 1,2,3,4 respectively. The reverse face of the board may contain knots and defects as described in Dressing Grade best face. Best Face Reverse APPEARANCE GRADES UNFINISHED 2012 BUILDING ON NATURE 5

6 DRESSING & FURNITURE GRADE GRADED TO THE BEST FACE Specifications A good appearance grade with a few sound defects allowed. Permitted defects (per board): Knots singly and in combination up to one third of the board width only Resin pockets 6mm wide x 50mm long three per board Surface checks 1mm wide x 100mm long Sound, inter grown and spike knots less than 50mm singly and with total sum of combination one third of the board width Three tight encased knots maximum 10mm Unlimited sloping grain Cup as given in Table 3 Bow as given in Table 1 Crook as given in Table 2 Twist as given in Table 4 Best Face Reverse The reverse face may contain all permitted defects described in Merchantable Grade best face except: Pith 6mm wide only Wane 10mm wide on face and 5mm wide on edges. 7 STANDARD GRADE GRADED TO THE BEST FACE Specifications A knotty appearance grade as per AS Permitted defects: Sound tight knots combination up to half the width of the board Checks not exceeding 1mm Tight encased knots maximum 10mm and 4 in a piece Resin pockets 6mm width x 75m long Sloping grain Best Face The reverse face may contain: Pith up to 10mm wide Want and wane not exceeding 6mm wide x 450mm long Sticker marks Edge defects Spike knots less than 20mm wide. 8 MERCHANTABLE GRADE GRADED TO THE BEST FACE Specifications A knotty grade generally used in carcass or cabinet making or lower grade dressed boards. Permitted defects: Knots in combination half the width of the board Sound spike knots 50mm wide Best Face Tight encased knots 20mm wide or one third of width Bark or resin pockets 50mm long x 20mm wide. Pith 12mm wide x 10% length Cup as given in Table 3 Bow as given in Table 1 Crook as given in Table 2 Reverse Twist as given in Table 4 Surface defects less than 100mm long Reverse face may contain: Pith 12mm wide Wane and want 20mm wide on face and 10mm wide on edges.
