CAC Criteria for March 2015 Resource Night The Program #4 Transition activities are used to facilitate smooth changes between activities Why Is This Important: "Transitions are difficult times to handle, unless the staff have thought through how to make these times go well. Transitions work best when staff have planned ahead, avoid having children wait, and keep them actively involved as much as possible." ( Cryer, D., Harms, T., & Riley, C. (2003). Chapter 34: Schedule. In All about the ecers r (p 362.) Lewisville, NC, USA: Kaplan Early Learning Company.) Helpful Websites: (transition activities for all types of transition from Penn State) (Transition ideas for preschool classroom from the Early Childhood News) (Helping children make transitions between activities from CSEFEL) Career Ladder Training: A Great Place for Kids, Guidance and Emotional Wellness Course 3 #7 Caregivers post program rules in a child friendly manner Why Is This Important: " the intention of discipline is to help children learn how to behave according to the established rules of conduct rules are clear, expectations for behavior are age and developmentally appropriate, and guidance is non punitive and educationally sound. Children need to learn about rules, limits and being responsible. " ( Cryer, D., Harms, T., & Riley, C. (2003). Chapter 31: Discipline. In All about the ecers r (p 317.) Lewisville, NC, USA: Kaplan Early Learning Company.) Helpful Websites: (Helping children gain self control by Texas Child Care Quarterly) Career Ladder Training: Guidance and Emotional Wellness Course 2, School Age Course 2 #17 Program supports those children who have a rest time as well as those children who do not Why Is This Important: "Since so much of a child's day in an early childhood program is spent being active with other children, a regularly scheduled time where each child can be alone to rest or just wind down during a quiet activity is beneficial." ( Cryer, D., Harms, T., & Riley, C. (2003). Chapter 11: Nap/rest. In All about the ecers r (p 103.) Lewisville, NC, USA: Kaplan Early Learning Company.) 2 Ideas for Daily Transitions A transition is when the children change from one activity to another. Activities to promote a smooth transition when the child arrives When a child is struggling to separate from the parent at drop off time try the following: 1. Greet the parent and child by name when they arrive. 2. If a child is struggling with saying good bye to the parent first wait for a verbal and/or nonverbal cue from the parent that they would like your help. 3. Say something like Today we are going to marble paint and read your favorite story and Mom will come back to pick you up after we have snack in the afternoon. 4. Encourage the parent to have a quick good bye routine with their child. 5. Play music softly in the background to promote an inviting environment. Welcome activities: a. Welcome Song b. Have play ready for the children when they arrive, self directed activities: puzzles, books, manipulatives. Transitions to use when self directed play ends, or getting ready to go outside Remember to give a five minute warning when self directed play is about to end a. Attention Getters: Teach the children catch phrases that you can use to get their attention. (see additional handout for the list of attention getters) b. Tell the children that you are going to play a song (using CD of Children s songs) and challenge them to finish cleaning up their activity before the song ends c. Set out books and/or puzzles for children to use others finish cleaning. d. Read a story to those who have finished cleaning. e. Sing songs with those who have finished cleaning. (review transition cards for ideas) f. Winter Time: have a mitten box and have children find matching mittens then walk quietly to the door. End of the Day Routines/Transitions a. Good bye song or chant (review transition cards for ideas) b. Always take time to say good bye to each child at the end of the day. c. Tell the parent something positive about their child s day

Use Props to create fun attention getting transitions 1. Mama Llama Stick Puppet a. Line leader can hold Mama Puppet as children walk from one area to another as a group. b. Hold Mama Puppet up and say Mama Llama says 5 minutes until it is time to clean up and then go to lunch. 2. Llama Emotion Cards: a. as children arrive they can choose a card to let you know how they are feeling b. When children are having a disagreement you could encourage them to choose a card to help express how they are feeling. 3. Llama Prints a. Copy enough Llama prints to mark a path to a fun activity. b. Copy enough Llama prints to place in learning centers as markers chowing how many can play at that area. 4. Use the overhead lights to signal when it is time to clean up to give the warning that it is about time to clean up. 5. Use a stuffed animal or baby doll as the class mascot. a. At the beginning of rest time you can say baby doll Susie is tire and needs everyone to be super quiet while she sleeps. 6. Magic Piece a. When cleaning the floor after a messy project you can say I spy a magic piece on the floor. I will be watching and who ever throws away the magic piece will be the line leader, door holder etc. Check out this Web site for some addition songs for teaching:

Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning WWB Training Kit #4 Helping Children Make Transitions between Activities btk4.pdf Transition Transition refers to a change Types of transitions: Transitions between activities Transitions between multiple settings Transitions between programs btk4.pdf Helping Children Make Transitions between Activities (Kit #4) 1

Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning Why is it important to address transitions between activities? Transitions take time Children often spend a lot of time waiting Transitions can be stressful and frustrating Skills such as cleaning up may reduce transition times and may lead to more time for children to be engaged in activities When children are taught what they "should be doing," we are less likely to see problem behaviors Many preschool teachers consider children's ability to independently make transitions a key skill btk4.pdf Strategies that support smooth transitions between activities Before the transition Plan your schedule to include a minimum number of transition times Consider what the children and adults will do during these times Provide verbal and nonverbal cues before transitions Teach children the expectations for the routine Minimize the number of transitions in which all children have to do the same thing at the same time btk4.pdf Helping Children Make Transitions between Activities (Kit #4) 2

Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning Strategies that support smooth transitions between activities During the transition Sing songs, play word or guessing games, recite rhymes, or do finger plays with children Plan a gradual increase or decrease in the level of activity and a good balance of active and quiet play Allow children adequate time to finish activities Plan something for those children who finish an activity quickly so they are not waiting without something to do btk4.pdf Strategies that support smooth transitions between activities After the transition Provide positive attention or feedback to children following smooth transitions Give very specific positive feedback after transitions btk4.pdf Helping Children Make Transitions between Activities (Kit #4) 3

Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning Promote independence during transitions Allow children to move individually from one area to another area when they complete an activity. Teach children to help others. Help children self-monitor during transitions. btk4.pdf Individualize transition strategies Provide support or different types of support to children during transitions. btk4.pdf Helping Children Make Transitions between Activities (Kit #4) 4

Using Llama Llama misses mama for transitioning to preschool, childcare, or kindergarten. This Fall, many young children will be heading off to preschool or child care for the first time. There is much excitement to this time of year, but also much anxiety for children who are leaving their parents and heading off to a new experience. Parents and teachers can help this transitional time by talking and validating the nervousness that children may feel. There are many wonderful children's books that talk about heading off to school that young children can relate to. One such book by Anna Dewdney is called "Llama Llama misses mama". As with the other "llama" books in the series; this book is fun to read, filled with rhyme and colorful pictures. Children will be able to relate to how little Llama feels about his first day of school; and be reassured by the fact that his mama comes back to pick him up at the end of the day! Teachers can use this book as part of their back to school lesson planning. Below are some additional activities that can be incorporated with the story: Circle Time: Talk to the children about their feelings about coming to school. Let them express their feelings and help to reassure them that it is ok to be nervous or sad. Ask them if they noticed that little Llama always carries a stuffed llama with him in the story. Pass around a stuffed animal for children to hug, and ask each child to each think of something they love that makes them feel safe. Make an emotion flip book: Talk about some of the emotions that Llama Llama felt in the story. Call out an emotion and ask students to make a face that represents that particular feeling. With a digital camera, take pictures of the children making different faces to express emotions. Print out some of the photos. Next, have the children glue one of their "emotion faces" onto cardstock or paper (teachers can write the appropriate emotion on the bottom of the page). Children can decorate their emotion page with stickers/drawing that represents that emotion. Put together as a class book and place it in the reading center or cozy space.

Daily Schedule : To help children become accustomed to the daily schedule of the class, re-read "Llama Llama misses mama" and point out all the different activities that Llama does in his day (Welcome time, Center Time, Story Time, Lunch/Snack, Outside etc.). Have children compare their classroom schedule to Llama's classroom schedule
