3 PADI DISCOVER SCUBA Your PADI Discover Scuba experience will teach you the basics of scuba diving as well as a few basic safety skills, you ll get to spend about 45 minutes in the water You will wear exactly the same type of equipment as if you were in the sea At the end of the course you will NOT BE a qualified diver but you will know how enjoyable diving can be If you return to us to complete your PADI Open Water course then you will receive a 15 discount. 4 Your equipment You will be using a standard set of scuba equipment Regulators Enable you to breath underwater, and monitor your depth and remaining air Weights Help you descend Mask, fins and snorkel Help you see and move underwater Cylinder Contains the high pressure air that you will breath B.C.D. Holds the tank on your back and lets you control your buoyancy

5 Breath continuously and never hold your breath No. 1 Rule of Scuba Diving!!! If you are only able to remember one thing from this memorable experience, then remember not to hold your breath while scuba diving Every meter you descend underwater increases the pressure to the air spaces in your body Pressure increases with depth If we were to take a balloon full of air underwater then the balloon would start to decrease in volume as a result of the increase in pressure! Q. If we returned the balloon to the surface it would return to it s original size If we managed to fill a balloon with air 10m underwater, what do you think would happen to the balloon if we took it to the surface? A. The balloon would probably burst due to the expansion of air DEPTH

6 Equalise your ears Just like in an aeroplane you will feel the changes in pressure in your ears To avoid discomfort and possibly a perforation of your ear drum you need to equalise your ears early and often! There are 3 ways to equalise your ears: Pinch your nose and gently blow against a closed mouth Wiggle your jaw from side to side Try swallowing If you have a cold or sinus problems then equalising may not always be possible. In this case do not continue to dive. If you ears are uncomfortable as you descend then simply swim up a few feet to ease the pain and try equalising again Pressure Q. How do you stop yours hurting and getting damaged? A. Equalise early and often

8 Stay close to your instructor For the first 20 minutes or so you will start off in the shallow end of the pool so you can get comfortable in the water Your instructor will show you how to use the equipment and a few basic skills such as regulator clearing techniques, how to clear water from inside your mask while underwater and how to equalise your ears These skills are designed to make you safer in the water and give you an idea of the type of skills conducted in the PADI Open Water Course Once you have mastered these skills it s time to head to the deep end and take a tour of the pool
