2 1. Planning a trip to Valentines Mansion A preparatory lesson introducing the Mansion, its history and key features would help to ensure pupils get the most out of the visit. This could also be done in the form of a homework or research task. Explaining the Recording Journey before the visit would ensure pupils gain as much information from their trip as possible. In the following resources you will find Key Questions and Learning Aims which can be used to introduce the session. There is also a work sheet that could be given to pupils. To explore the Mansion and gardens pupils will need at least one and a half hours. Working in small groups and taking turns to view the inside then the outside of the mansion enables pupils to see a wide range of interesting features. The Recording Journey session as outlined below can be adapted to all key stages. The time needed to complete detailed sketches, rubbings, pressings etc would obviously vary depending on the year group and number of pupils. These resources are designed around the National Curriculum for Art & Design and Citizenship. The Recording Journey idea could however be adapted and used to help pupils to explore the Mansion from a variety of subject areas. 3 2. Session Outline A Recording Journey 2.1 Main aims of session This session outline is provided as a guide for exploring Valentines Mansion focusing on Art & Design and Citizenship. It aims to:- Introduce pupils to Valentines Mansion. To teach pupils about the importance of recording information and to consider how information about the Mansion has been recorded so far. To encourage pupils to look at and record the details and patterns found inside and outside of the Mansion. To consider the aesthetic and functional aspects of the interior and exterior decoration. To promote resourcefulness and self directed learning. To engage pupils in their environment and local surroundings. 3

4 2.2 NC links to Art & Design for KS3 1.1b Exploring and experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques. 1.3a Engaging with a range of images & artefacts from different contexts, recognising the varied characteristics of different cultures and using them to inform their creating & making. 1.3b Understanding the role of the artist, craftsperson & designer in a range of cultures, times & contexts. 2.1a Pupils should be able to develop ideas and intentions by working from first-hand observations, experience, inspiration, imagination and other sources. 2.1e Explore and develop ideas using sketchbooks, journals and other appropriate strategies. 3C 4a 4C Study a range of artefacts from contemporary, historical, personal & cultural contexts. Work independently and collaboratively, taking different roles in teams. Respond to the school s location and local cultural influences 2.3 Links to GCSE Art & Design Assessment Objectives (Edexcel) for KS4 AO1: Record observations, experiences and ideas that are appropriate to intentions. AO2: Analyse and evaluate images, objects and artefacts showing understanding of context. 2.4 NC links to Citizenship This session and work produced should provide interesting discussions and numerous opportunities to highlight the links between Art & Design and Citizenship. Pupils should be encouraged to consider how records have been kept about the Mansion up to now, this will involve researching the local history and looking at how the community has evolved and changed over the years. In order for pupils to fully understand the context of the mansion they could discuss the functional aspects of the design and decoration of the Mansion, for example: - Fireplaces were installed as a necessity to heat the property and would have required constant tending from maids etc- how does this compare to our use of interior 4

5 decoration today? This should promote interesting thoughts about the social history of the Mansion, who has lived in it? How has it been used, how will it be used in the future? How has its style and decoration changed over the years and why? 1.3d Exploring community cohesion and the different forces that bring about change in communities over time. 3e Actions that individuals, groups and organisations can take to influence decisions affecting communities & the environment 5

6 3. Session Introduction 3.1 Learning Aims To learn the definition of Record. To learn how to record information in a variety of ways. To learn how to focus on specific areas of interest, improving pupil s ability to independently select and record from primary and secondary sources. To learn how to use media, processes and resources creatively. 3.2 Key Questions How would you define the word Record? Account, album, archives, background, chronicle, diary, document, evidence, history, journal, log, memoir, memorial, recording, remembrance, report, testimony, trace, track, witness, inscribe, note, preserve, show, tape, transcribe, video, communicate, describe, detail, narrate, portray. How many different ways of Recording can you think of? Drawing, tape recording, photographs, rubbings, pressings, collecting objects, note taking, video recording, measuring etc Starter Activity Ideas for how to use the Image Worksheet Quick Sketches: Pupils are given a few minutes to fill 10 boxes with patterns taken from the image worksheet. Key Word Game: In pairs pupils come up with a list of adjectives to describe the images, for example: - symmetrical, repeat patterns, flowing lines, sculptural, moulded. This could also be adapted for younger pupils by already having a list of keywords then asking pupils to match the words to the pictures. Discussion: In groups pupils could discuss different aspects of the images for example:- the materials used, the function of the various objects/ features, similarities and differences in the patterns, influences on the style of patterns etc. 6

8 4. Main Activity Pupils are divided into small groups, half explore the exterior of the Mansion and grounds, and the other half can view various rooms inside the Mansion. The focus is on Pattern & Details. Pupils should be encouraged to record their findings in the following ways: - Drawings- Quick, timed sketches, line drawings, one or two more detailed studies. Rubbings- using wax crayons to record surface textures. Clay pressings- using air-dry clay to record moulded or carved patterns. Note taking- to record thoughts, impressions, descriptions, key words. Photographs Sound Recording- to record environmental sounds on the way to the Mansion and in surroundings. Also can be used to record pupils descriptions, A Journey through the Mansion. Video Recording- pupils could capture their own visual recording journey. Map Making- pupils could be encouraged to record their journey from start to finish in the form of a map (as if looking down at the Mansion from a Bird s eye view-see map provided below). They could include symbols, logos, and patterns to illustrate their journey and remind them of everything they see. These maps can be used later on when developing work as the aerial patterns and symbols can be incorporated into their other studies. 4.1 Resources Sketchbooks and/or drawing worksheets to help focus pupils and ensure sufficient work is produced. Newsprint paper for rubbings and wax crayons Air-dry clay (white- so doesn t mark surfaces) Pencils & fine liners Digital Camera, Video Camera, Tape recorder 8

11 Recording Journey worksheet 1. Write a sentence explaining what you think the definition of Record is Fill in the boxes below with as many different ways of recording as you can think of. Ways of Recording 3. Write down key words or draw symbols to help you remember your first impressions of the mansion and your feelings as you explore the various rooms. 4. Draw a map to show your journey around the mansion. Use symbols and patterns to illustrate the different features/ textures/surfaces that you look at. 5. Use the drawing worksheet or your sketchbook to do quick line drawings that focus on areas of pattern and detail. 6. Take rubbings of different surface textures. 11

Plenary Ideas On returning to school pupils can discuss the various ways in which they have recorded information and ask themselves the following questions: Which methods of recording were particularly successful or useful and why? How does the information they have recorded differ from that which has been kept about the mansion up to now? How do the exterior and interior patterns and decoration compare? Pupils could work in groups to present their findings in the form of a power point presentation. 5.1 Homework Activity Pupils could record a variety of patterns and details from the interior and exterior of their own homes. They could use some of the media and techniques used on their visit to the Mansion. This could be developed alongside their mansion recordings to link and compare contemporary society/culture/style to that of the mansion. 5.2 School based development of the Mansion Project (follow up sessions) Pupils could work individually or in small groups to collate their findings. Their drawings, notes, photos, rubbings, pressings, maps etc could be combined in a visual way to convey their experience of the Mansion. This could take the form of an Inspiration Board, Visual Mind Map, mini sketchbook, collages etc. Pupils could choose several drawings to develop further or a few areas of detail that they wish to explore in more depth. Pupils could combine their recordings from their home environment with their Mansion studies to create a layered comparison between past and present. Pupils could research the history of the architectural features and decoration in more detail and incorporate their findings into their practical work. Pupils could also look at how artists have recorded information about buildings, interiors and environments. 12

16 7. Examples of work Work from this project could be developed into clay, print or mixed media final pieces. For clay work pupils could explore plaster moulding, carving, slip work & tile design. For print work pupils could explore textured collagraphs, mono printing, repeat pattern design, textile printing and lino printing.
