Dates of PS Preparation/Revision: On campus at GCU Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies Hospitality, leisure, sport and tourism June EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The programme is a postgraduate progression from the MA Media & Communication top up with a primary focus on international students, but also open to domestic students. It aims to provide students with practical skills underpinned with a theoretical understanding of the practices and conventions required by multimedia practitioners in a responsible manner as global citizens. The programme of study aims to equip learners with practical and the intellectual skills and in-depth knowledge to synthesise and apply relevant theory to multimedia communication. Central to the programme is the personal and professional development of students with an emphasis on managing self and others, cross-cultural awareness, global citizenship and responsible leadership. The programme focuses on industry specific environments and other wider contemporary geopolitical and societal issues complements the study of multimedia communication. This includes areas of communications including public relations, branding, journalism and corporate communications. The Masters degree will enhance student employability through participation in a wide-range of teaching and learning experiences including multimedia portfolios, case studies, projects and presentations, field visits and visiting industry speakers. The programme aims to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a career in a wide range of multimedia communication operating in an international environment. Students may come from a background of having studied a related subject area at undergraduate level, particularly the MA Media & Communication top up at GCU. However, the programme will also be attractive to applicants who have studied other related subjects (e.g. economics, cultural studies, social sciences, psychology, etc) at undergraduate level and who are committed to developing a career in multimedia communication. The programme is offered on a full time. The programme team believe the programme or modules within it will appeal to existing professionals and the team is keen for practitioners to apply. The programme welcomes applications through the Flexible Entry route involving Credit Transfer and RPL. The aims of the shall be to: 1. Provide students with a broad underpinning knowledge of the defining features, scope, activities and economic and regulatory contexts of multimedia communication 2. Enable students to critically reflect on the interaction between the global and the local as they effect polices and practices in multimedia communication 3. Enable students to develop a critical understanding of multimedia communication within the contexts of ethical, social and production constraints and limits under which some of the communication industries operate 4. Enable students to acquire a practical and critical awareness of current technological developments - clustered around the internet, social media and multimedia - which drive the entrepreneurial development of ideas, outputs and brands in communication strategies 5. Provide students with the opportunity to be introduced to some of the specialised skills, practices and knowledge required in multimedia communication

Enable students to acquire the core transferable skills of time management, interpersonal skills, presentational skills, flexibility and the ability to work in teams and demonstrate leadership skills. 7. Additionally enable students to acquire some of those particular transferable skills central to successful activity in the multimedia communication, namely communication skills (written, audio and video), creativity, independence, commercial awareness and innovation 8. Enable students via a Postgraduate Dissertation to demonstrate their ability to plan, execute and reflect on an original work of academic enquiry, focused on theories related to the communication industries 9. Provide an optional opportunity via Dissertation develop skills in organisation and communication, autonomy, personal responsibility and initiative, and critical reflection 3.2 Objectives of programme The Postgraduate Diploma Exit Award Objective will be that: A student will have achieved educational aims 1-7, and be able to demonstrate their knowledge of multimedia communication in general and in specific detailed relation to the main theories of global communication, the practices and theories of public relations, branding and communications strategies, and be aware of some of the technological and occupational skills required across the field and in these sectors. The Masters Exit Award Objective will be that: A student in addition will have achieved aims 8 & 9, and be able to demonstrate their ability to organise independently a dissertation and show notable skills of autonomy, initiative and reflective critical understanding of the main theories and practices of multimedia communication. 4. PROGRAMME STRUCTURES AND REQUIREMENTS, LEVELS, MODULES, CREDITS AND AWARDS The Programme is in compliance with the Glasgow Caledonian University Qualifications Framework as it applies to Postgraduate Awards (two trimesters totalling 60 credits each at SHE Level 11 or M for a postgraduate diploma, followed by a third trimester further 60 M credits for Masters). 4 8. ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS The Glasgow Caledonian University Assessment Regulations apply to this programme Role of External Assessor: External Assessors are appointed to ABs by GSBS School Board. The duties of an External Assessor will include: To moderate the work of the Internal Assessors in respect of the assessments under his/her jurisdiction To attend meetings of the AB at which the results of a final stage assessment will be determined To satisfy himself/herself that the work and decisions of the ABs are consistent with the policies and regulations of the University and best practice in higher education To ensure that students are assessed within the regulations approved by the University for the programme and to inform the University on any matter which, in his/her view, militates against the maintenance of proper academic standards To report annually to the GSBS School Board on the standards attained by students on the programme and on any other matters which may seem appropriate for report To inform the University if he/she decides to resign over a matter or principle in order that this may be brought to the attention of Senate as a matter of urgency.
