3 1. The Gospel of the Kingdom Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.

4 1. The Gospel of the Kingdom The Purpose of the Gospel is to bring about the Kingdom of God on earth. This Kingdom is entered through Repentance and Belief. This Kingdom results in Christ restoring and reconciling ALL of Creation.

5 Jesus is the victorious King. Evil is overcome! In the Air (2 nd Coming) The Gospel On the Ground (1 st Coming) Jesus is our substitute. Sin is forgiven.

6 Creation Fall Redemption We were created to image God: Intimacy with God (love) Dominion over creation (purpose) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.- Gen. 1:27 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. Gen. 2:15

7 Creation Fall Redemption The Fall brought a curse upon all creation and separation from God for mankind. Gen Alienation from God 3:8. We no longer seek God s glory. 2. Alienation from self- 3:10. We seek our own glory. 3. Alienation from others- 3:7, We seek glory from others, when this fails we attack. 4. Alienation from creation- 3:17. We force creation to glorify us (idols) rather than God.

8 Creation Fall Redemption Israel- God told Israel to show their faith by Loving God and Others. They did this by Doing Good. God wanted Israel to experience SHALOM: completeness, flourishing, and peace. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you (shalom) and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jer. 29:11

9 Creation Fall Redemption Israel would experience SHALOM through JUSTICE. He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

10 Creation Fall Redemption The Law: For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. Deut. 10:17-18

11 Creation Fall Redemption The Law: There should be no poor among you, for the Lord your God will greatly bless you in the land he is giving you as a special possession... But if there are any poor Israelites in your towns when you arrive in the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tightfisted toward them. Instead, be generous and lend them whatever they need. Deut. 15:4-8

12 Creation Fall Redemption The Prophets: No, this is the kind of fasting I (God) want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. Is. 58:6-7

13 Creation Fall Redemption Wisdom: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Prov. 31:8 Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honors him. Prov. 14:31

14 Creation Fall Redemption Jesus: He is the Prince of Peace (SHALOM) He (Jesus) unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord s favor has come. Lk. 4:17-20.

15 Creation Fall Redemption The Kingdom At Hand. Spiritual. Intimacy restored. Already. CHURCH The Kingdom In Its Fullness. Physical. Dominion restored. Not Yet.

16 2. Called and Created to Do Good Called- Mark 1:16-20 Created- Eph. 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

17 Ephesians 1:9-10 God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. 10 And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ everything in heaven and on earth.. (NLT)

18 3. Doing Good Mark 1:21-2:17. Spiritual Healing Physical Healing Social Healing Forgiveness of Sin

19 3. Doing Good Why Do Good? 1. Glory- Doing Good glorifies God. Mark 2:12 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matt. 5:16

20 3. Doing Good Why Do Good? 2. Grace- We are empowered to Do Good by our position in Christ. Mark 1: Faith- We believe the Kingdom is Already but Not Yet and we want others to catch a glimpse of it. Mark 1:15

21 4. Warnings A. Don t brush aside felt needs. Physical Needs Spiritual Needs Psychological Needs Relational Needs

22 4. Warnings B. Don t expect to solve all problems. This won t happen until Jesus enemies are all fully defeated. Hebrews 10:13

23 4. Warnings C. Don t Do Good from the flesh. 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:7-10

24 5. Implications A. Evangelism- this is crucial, it s how people enter the Kingdom. B. Social Justice- this is crucial, we must promote Christ s Kingdom and fight the effects of sin. C. Work- Every job is a calling from God and serves His Kingdom when it brings flourishing (Shalom).

25 Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
