INVITATIONS to CONFESSION of SIN If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8,9 In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God. The proof of God s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, Romans 5:8 we dare to approach God with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. See Hebrews 4:14-16 Let us ask God to forgive us. Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace. that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14.16 against God and our neighbor. If anyone sins, we have someone who pleads with the Father on our behalf Jesus Christ, the righteous one. And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone. 1 John 2:1,2 before god and one another. Come to me, all of you who labor and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 Let us ask God to forgive us.

The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18 Let us admit our sins before God. For God so loved the world that God gave the only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16,17 against God and our neighbor. Let us draw near to God with sincerity of heart and full assurance of faith, our guilty hearts sprinkled clean, our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22 before god and one another. Our God is a God of justice, waiting to be gracious to you, yearning to have pity on you. Blessed are all who wait for the Lord. Isaiah 30:18 In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God. This is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. I will forgive their evil deeds, and I will remember their sin no more. Jeremiah 31:33-34 In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God. Hear the word of God through the prophet Isaiah: Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before me; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. against God and our neighbors, confident in God's steadfast love. Isaiah 1 Let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. The grace of God flows freely here. With penitence and faith, let us confess our sin. Revelation 22

ASSURANCES of PARDON The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I Timothy 1:15; 1 Peter 2:24 The LORD Is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is God s love for those who fear God. As far as the east is from the west, so far has God removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:8, Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Romans 8:34; II Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old life has passed away; everything has become (fresh and) new! All this is from God, who has reconciled us to God s self through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. II Corinthians 5:17-18

PRAYERS for ILLUMINATION Let us pray After a brief silence, one of the following is said: Guide us, O God, by your Word and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read, and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen. Prepare our hearts, O God to accept your Word. Silence in us any voice but your own, that, hearing, we may also obey your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God by your Spirit tell us what we need to hear, and show us what we ought to do, to obey Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. O Lord our God, your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Give us grace to receive your truth in faith and love, that we may be obedient to your will and live always for your glory; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Gracious God, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth. Make us hungry for this heavenly food, that it may nourish us today in the ways of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. God our helper, by your Holy Spirit, open our minds, that as the Scriptures are read, and your Word is proclaimed, we may be led into your truth and taught your will, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Loving God, help us so to hear your holy Word, that we may truly understand; that, understanding, we may believe, and, believing, we may follow in all faithfulness and obedience, seeking your honor and glory in all that we do; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul. Pour out upon us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that, being taught by you in Holy Scripture, our hearts and minds may be opened to know the things that pertain to life and holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. OFFERING One of the following may be said: The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it. Psalm 24:1 God of mercy, you promised never to break your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak your eternal Word that does not change. Then may we respond to your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Blessed Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Freely you have received, Freely give. Matthew 10:8b The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. II Cor. 9:6 Give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. II Cor. 9:7 Do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16 The reader may then say: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus: It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35b The liturgist may then say: With gladness, let us present the offering of our life and labor to the Lord.
