Scope To remove and replace the central processing unit (CPU) printed circuit board (PCB) in the Sievers UPW Boron Analyzer. This procedure describes how to remove and replace the CPU PCB assembly of the Sievers UPW Boron Analyzer and applies to the current revision of the assembly. 3. Responsibilities The removal and replacement of this assembly is to be performed by personnel trained in electro-mechanical equipment maintenance. The successful performance of this procedure requires that you be mechanically proficient with assemblies, tools, and mounting hardware. Please read the entire instruction before proceeding. Additionally, ensure that you have familiarized yourself with the analyzer by thoroughly reading the Operation and Maintenance Manual. 4. Safety WARNING Although you will turn off power to the analyzer, the power cord to the unit will remain connected for ESD protection. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, do not touch any component in the card cage area (upper-left corner) of the analyzer. 5. Materials This procedure requires that you gain access to the inside of the analyzer. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, be sure to power off the analyzer as described in the procedure. To ensure correct grounding of the chassis for electro-static discharge (ESD) protection, do not disconnect the power cord from the unit. Be cautious when handling electronic components in and around the card cage. Procedure 6.1 Prepare the analyzer for the CPU board removal and replacement If the analyzer is currently operating, press STOP on the front panel to put the analyzer in a stopped state Turn off power by toggling the On/Off switch on the side of the analyzer to the 0 position Shut off flow of sample fluid into the analyzer by closing the valve(s) of all source water inlet lines. 6.2 Remove the CPU board from the analyzer card cage assembly Open the door of the analyzer Remove the ESD wrist strap from its packaging. Slip the wrist loop over your hand and cinch it snugly around your wrist. Attach the alligator clip to the ground stud on the inside lower right corner of the door (see Figure 1). ESD Strap Attachment to Ground Stud Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the captive screws (either four or six) securing the electronics cover to the chassis (see Figure 2). 3 Mounting Screws (4 or 6) Figure 2. Electronics Cover Mounting Screws If installed, remove the black metal card retainer bracket from the front of the card cage by unscrewing the two captive screws. 4 6.2.6 Press the card ejector tab located above the data card to dislodge the data card from the CPU board (see Figure 3). Remove the data card and set it aside Locate connector P2 (see Figure 3). The ribbon cable to the front panel display is connected here. To disconnect the cable, press both ejector latches to release the ribbon cable from the connector. Unplug the cable and move it out of the way Place your fingers on the card ejectors located on the top and bottom of the CPU board. Rotate the card ejector handles away from the card, dislodging the CPU board from the card cage connector Slide the CPU board out of the card cage and place it aside. 6.3 Install the replacement CPU board in the analyzer card cage assembly Remove the replacement CPU board from its ESD protective cover. Figure 4. Replacement CPU Board Align the top and bottom edges of the CPU board with the card guides of the center slot (see Figure 3). Make sure the component side of the board faces left and the data card holder is on the right Slide the card toward the back of the cage until the card cage connector engages, then push firmly until the connector fully seats. 5 6.3.4 Locate the front panel display ribbon cable. The cable plug is keyed and only fits one way into the connector jack. Orient the plug correctly and insert it into CPU board connector P2. Ensure that the connector s ejector latches secure the ribbon cable in place (see Figure 5). Ribbon Cable Connector Latches Card Ejector Data Card Figure 5. Ribbon Cable Connector Latches Route the ribbon cable through the open cable clamp on the side wall of the analyzer chassis. Snap the clamp closed Align the data card with the card slot in the CPU board. The side of the data card with the arrows must face to the left. Slide the data card into the slot until the ejector tab above it is pushed out, indicating that the card is fully seated in its connector (see Figure 5). 6.4 If previously removed, attach the black metal card retainer bracket to the front of the card cage by screwing in the two captive screws one at the top and one at the bottom. Make sure the bracket is oriented with the longest "section" to the top of the card cage (see Figure 6). GE Analytical Instruments, Inc. 2005H Page 5 of 6 DIN Rev. A

Insert and tighten the mounting screws to secure the electronics cover in place (see Figure 2). 6.6 Place the analyzer into operation Unclip the ESD wrist strap from the ground stud and remove the strap Close and latch the analyzer door Open the valve(s) to restore the flow of sample fluid into the analyzer from all source water inlet lines Turn on power to the analyzer by toggling the On/Off switch on the side of the analyzer to the I position. 6.7 Place the removed board in the packaging that contained the replacement. Seal the packaging and attach the return shipping label. Mark the label with the Return Authorization Number (RA#) that GE Analytical Instruments provided when the replacement board was ordered.
