3 Concepts About Print... How do Books Work? A book has a front cover and a back cover... sometimes they wrap around. A book has a beginning and an end. A book has pages. A page in a book has a top and a bottom. You turn pages one at a time to follow the story. You read a story from left to right on each page. The story stays the same each time you read it. You are your child's first teacher... COOL!

4 Stages of Reading Development "The Magical Stage" Child displays an interest in handling books Listens to print read for extended periods of time Notices print in some contexts (signs, labels) Letters may appear in drawings Orally plays with letters and sounds Sees reading as "magical" ie: "You know what that says?!"

5 Stages of Reading Development Emergent Reader Becoming comfortable with books Increasing awareness that print carries meaning Starts to read left to right, top to bottom May point to words Relies heavily on picture clues to figure out unknown words Patterned repetitive text supports the reader Identifies beginning and ending sounds Reads common high frequency words Increasing awareness that words are made of specific letters

7 Stages of Reading Development: Early/Developing Reader Knows how a book "works" Uses strategies to solve unknown words (visual, syntax, meaning) Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Uses more sounds to decode words and beginning to look for word "chunks" (-at, ch) Starts to pay attention to punctuation Reads with increased fluency Reads for meaning!

9 Stages of Reading Development: Transitional Reader May enjoy reading books in a series to help with comprehension (similar characters, vocabulary, text structure) Simultaneous cueing strategies for word solving(meaning, Structure, Visual) Reads with fluency, phrasing, punctuation and at a more appropriate rate Focus shifts from reading accuracy to deeper comprehension

11 Stages of Reading Development Independent Reader Confident in reading independently Reads for information Uses a variety of strategies seamlessly Internalizes and uses vocabulary that is read Can maintain comprehension in longer, more difficult texts with more sophisticated plot structures

12 Stages of Writing Development Stage 1: Picture Writing Pictures stand for ideas and tell stories Reads drawings as if there were writing on it "Once upon a time there was a dinosaur. He liked to eat leaves"

13 Stages of Writing Development Stage 2: Scribble Writing Scribbles and intends the scribble to carry meaning Scribbles resemble writing on a page- possibly left to right "This says, I like dinosaurs. They are really big."

14 Stages of Writing Development Stage 3: Letter-Stringing Writes long strings of letters The same letter may be formed in different ways Letters do not match sounds in words Child may read it or ask, "What does this say?"

15 Stages of Writing Development Stage 4: Semi-Phonetic Stage Begins to understand that letters make sounds Often uses 1 symbol for words, sounds or syllables Usually uses beginning sound to stand for whole word

16 Stages of Writing Development Stage 5: Phonetic Uses symbols for many sounds heard in a word, but symbols may be incorrect Writes from left to right Words may overlap Spacing may not be correct

18 Stages of Writing Development Stage 6: Transitional Spelling Uses more conventional spelling, but constructs spelling when correct is unknown Spacing between words is more appropriate Experiments with punctuation

19 Stages of Writing Development Stage 7: Conventional Spelling Knows conventional spelling rules and applies them systematically Usually resembles adult writing in content and appearance

20 Stages of Writing Development Remember that writing, like reading, is a developmental continuum... a child progresses through these stages when given time to experiment, encouragement and guided support.

22 What is Phonemic Awareness? Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words. Phonemic awareness concerns SOUNDS not actual letters. Phonemic awareness games could actually be done... in the dark!

23 Stages of Phonemic Awareness? Parts of a Word Breaking a word into syllables and then blending parts (onsets & rimes) together. "How many beats are there in the word elbow?" "What is /sh/.../ip/?" (sh-onset, ip-rime) Start with larger sound chunks and then move to individual sounds "What is /h/.../o/... /p/?" (Note: blending together is easier than breaking apart)

25 Stages of Phonemic Awareness? Sequence of Sounds The ability to identify where a given sound is within a word. "Do you hear the /b/ sound at the beginning or the end of the word big?" Beginning sounds are easier to discriminate than ending sounds. The middle (medial) sound is the hardest to isolate.

27 Stages of Phonemic Awareness? Sound Segmenting The ability to discriminate the individual sounds that make up a word "Can you tell me the sounds in the word man?" /m/... /a/... /n/ "Can you tell me the sounds in chip?" /ch/... /i/.../p/

30 Stages of Phonemic Awareness? Sound Manipulation The ability to substitute beginning, middle and ending sounds to create a new word Phoneme substitution: "Can you trade the /m/ in man for a /t/? What's the new word?" Phoneme deletion: "Can you take the /f/ off of flip? What is that word?" Again, beginning sounds are easier than end sounds.
