4 Historical Note At the beginning of the school year, a plan was developed by the Board of Education to create a series of monographs on various aspects of local life in Muncie, Indiana through which junior high school students could interpret their community. Committees were appointed by the Board of Education to write the monographs under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools and the Director of Research. Teachers, high school students, and officials from the various businesses represented in the monograph series were involved in the project and additional historical information was contributed by the Federal Writers' Project of the United States Work Progress Administration. Scope and Contents This collection consists of a series of monographs on manufacturers, utility companies, and local life in Muncie, Indiana. The monographs were published between 1938 and 1939 by the Muncie Board of Education for use in junior high schools. Arrangement Arranged alphabetically by monograph letter (roughly chronological by publication date).
