3 Body language in an interview Interviews are more than just question and answer sessions. A lot of the interview is about how you present yourself. Body language is another way of describing looking and feeling the part which you need to convey. Looking and feeling the part will help you to convince the interviewer that you are business like, helpful and enthusiastic. It is important to realise how influential this can be at interviews

6 Body language activity Decide the message for each of the gestures depicted previously and complete the body language questionnaire.
7 Body Language DO S Smile Sit upright, leaning slightly forward Make regular eye contact Keep your arms and legs still Use a range of facial expressions Sit with your hands on lap/leg, with pads of fingers lightly touching.
8 Body language DONT S Fold your arms Wind your legs around each other Sit with your bag on your lap Scratch yourself Touch your face (especially your nose) Use pointing or jabbing gestures Slouch back in the chair Sniff/clear your throat/flick hair off face constantly Sit with hands tightly clasped together Drum fingers, tap with pencil

10 First impressions Research has shown that in terms of first impressions 55% is based on appearance How many of us have judged a person by first impressions? 38% on tone of voice 7% only on what is actually said. Looking and sounding the part is critical.

12 Preparing for an interview When preparing for interviews: Research the Job Read and understand the job advert, person specification and the job description. Research the Company Find out as much as you can about the company. Use the internet to search for information about the company. Use local resources such as library, newspaper company brochures Research the interview, format and interviewers It is perfectly acceptable to ring up the company and to ask for this information if they have not sent it to you. The interviewers may be profiled on Linkedin. Think of the questions you are likely to ask or be asked and how you plan to answer them
13 Research, preparation and rehearsal A good CV, excellent telephone technique and a positive job search strategy will all lead to a job interview. For some, an interview is a really exciting opportunity For others, it may be the worst possible experience. It may be ages since your last interview. You may have no idea what you are going to say.
14 As with all job search efforts, many difficulties can be overcome through research, preparation and rehearsal. You will still be nervous but this is not always a bad thing. Being nervous can make you more alert. Interviewers are often not as bad as you think they will be and most interviewers try to put you at ease. Careful research gives you a chance to mentally prepare.
15 Questions you might be asked What interests you about this job? Why do you want this job? What applicable attributes / experience do you have? Why are you the best person for the job? What do you know about this company? Why do you want to work here? Are you willing to travel? Is there anything I haven't told you about the job or company that you would like to know?
16 Questions you might ask How many people work in this office/department? How much travel is expected? What is the typical work week? Is overtime expected? What are the prospects of career progression? If I am extended a job offer, how soon would you like me to start? What can I tell you about my qualifications? When can I expect to hear from you?
17 Practice You should find that, with your prepared answers and bearing in mind body language, you can do really well. Practice with a friend or family member before any real interviews It will help you to prepare and give you more confidence.
