WIA is legislation passed by Congress in 1988 that provides federal funds for employment and training assistance for those who qualify. How does WIA help? 5 CAREER TRAINING CENTER Administrative Professional In this course, you will learn the right tools and strategies to help you manage day-to-day tasks with confidence, including projects, people, and situations. You will also learn time management and organizational skills so you can build effective business relationships and exceed customer expectations. This course features Microsoft Office basics (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), office organization, record keeping, report writing, customer service training, time management, math strategies, and professional tips. This course will give you the training to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course content includes: Basic Life Support (CPR, AED) for Healthcare Providers, adult and pediatric CPR, foreignbody airway obstruction, and use of automated external defibrillation with CPR. 6 Build a Career in Healthcare While Earning College Credits Nurse Aide Certification (CNA) Certified nurse aides (CNA) are valuable members of the healthcare team, providing basic nursing care in a variety of settings. Capital Community College is licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health to present our 147- hour part-time course. CAREER TRAINING CENTER The 147-hour course is offered in two formats: A 7-week weekday course A 10-week evening course State competency testing is included at the end of the course. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for: 3 college credits from Capital Community College or 4 college credits from Charter Oak State College Participants in the CNA program must: Be 17 years of age or older Take assessment tests for reading and math (Note: Individuals with college experience may request the assessment test waivers.) 7 CAREER TRAINING CENTER SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT W/ MS OFFICE (WORD, EXCEL) & QUICKBOOKS Do you dream of owning your own business? Capital Community College has the small business start-up training you need to make it happen. A business leader who understands what it takes will guide you through the process. Course highlights include how to apply for financing, develop a marketing plan, prepare budget projections, write a business plan, understand government regulations and handle operations (human resources, accounting and bookkeeping). Learn how to use Word, Excel and Quickbooks. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Did you know the need for qualified pharmacy technicians is on the rise in Connecticut and nationwide? This comprehensive program will prepare you for an entry level position in a community, hospital, or long-term care setting. This course covers medical terminology, how to read and interpret prescriptions, drug definitions, dosage calculations and dosages, and billing/insurance reimbursement. The 75-hour course is offered as a two day evening course. Students will be prepared for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national certification exam, which is a separate cost. (Note: Those with a felony conviction may not be able to take the certification exam.) 8 CAREER TRAINING CENTER TRANSITIONING FROM TRAINING TO CAREER Arm yourself with the necessary skills to make your transition to a professional career successful. This course will give you the preparation skills needed so you can feel confident when you enter the workforce. NAVIGATING THE WORKPLACE So you now have the technical training and professional skills, but do you have general workplace skills to be an effective employee? This course will get you on your way. This course will cover: Writing and business math review Problem solving and decision making strategies Time management Professional behavior Computer literacy This course is required for all students enrolled in a certificate program. 9 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Capital's Workforce & Continuing Education offers a variety of English as a Second Languge classes for speakers of other languages to help individuals achieve success in professional work settings. Our classes begin at low-level basic English classes and focus on oral communications (understanding and speaking) and basic reading and writing skills. Basic ESL (ESL Level 1) classes introduce grammar structures and English vocabulary. Students are encouraged in all classes to engage in English conversation. Basic ESL Oral Communication for Employment Do you need to learn enough English to look for a job, or get a better job? In this basic course for those with little or no English, students gain basic communication skills to understand and speak in a variety of occupational situations, including job searching. This course focuses on understanding and speaking. This course covers: Self-introduction, giving information about self, family, residence, and country Asking and answering simple questions Vocabulary for work: occupations, skills Filling out simple job application forms Giving information to employers Numbers, time, schedules, and calendars (days & dates) Asking information about locations Imperatives and following instructions Students should have little or no English skills. In this course, students with basic English improve their communication skills to understand and speak in a variety of occupational settings. Students also learn fundamental English for job searching. This course focuses on understanding, reading and speaking. This course will cover: Self-presentation and description Reading simple Help Wanted ads Describing abilities, skills, education Answering questions about work Asking questions about work Answering questions from prospective employers and basic interview skills Responding to simple instructions in the workplace Reporting simple problems Writing simple notes to inform and request Students should have basic English skills. NEW This three-workshop small business series covers successful strategies to get your small business started, from business plans, financing options, to effective marketing. Each 3-hour class surveys a key component to organize your personal finances and maximize long-term financial health. Gain a better understanding of key personal finance principles, debt, credit repair, investing, and retirement planning. The first class in this series introduces personal financial planning and money management skills. Learn about individual accounting and budgeting, emergency funds, taxes in your financial plan, calculating net worth, and different types of deductions. (Rm 307) July 9 $50 Credit Repair Toolkit This class focuses on spending, debt, and credit, with specific focus on strategies to repair credit and create responsible spending plans. Learn about consumer credit and personal risk management techniques, interest rates, and identity theft. If money and debt cause you stress, this class is a class for you. (Rm 301) July 16 $50 Investing in Plain English Do you want to invest, but don't know where to start? Do you have a portfolio that you d like to diversify? Learn effective investing strategies on how to increase your wealth. Learn the basics of investing and the rules for wealth creation, discuss investment options and get tips on how to find your own financial advisor. (Rm 301) July 23 $50 Planning Your Retirement: Are You Ready? Setting goals, envisioning your retirement, and making your retirement planning easier can be difficult at any age. Discuss retirement and estate planning, income taxes, estate taxes, and plan for the possibility of long-term health care. (Rm 301) July 30 $50 Raising Capital for Your Small Business Learn about personal and professional credit, business plans, managing cash flow, business accounting, and collateral requirements. The commercial loan process, and small business loan lending programs available through the U.S. Small Business Administration will also be discussed. (Rm 318) July 20 $50 Writing a Successful Business Plan Learn strategies for a winning business plan to get your small business off the ground. Discuss market and customer research, define business objectives, and create your own action plan. (Rm 318) July 27 $50 Marketing to Win Customers for Life Success doesn't happen accidentally. This class will discuss effective marketing strategies, industry trends, customer needs and competitor analysis, and creative print marketing as well as approaches to social media advertising. (Rm 318) August 3 $50 Film Appreciation Workshop NEW In this 4-class workshop, view and discuss some of today's most celebrated movies and directors by Orson Welles, Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and more. Enjoy a full-length film written and directed by the Coen Brothers on the final day of class. This retail establishment, founded in 1847 by Gershon Fox, grew to become the city s largest department store in the 20th century. Gershon s son, Moses, hired noted New York architect, Cass Gilbert to rebuild the store on a grand scale after a devastating fire. The 11-story, steel frame and masonry structure on Main Street was completed in Ornate architectural features of this Neo-Classical Revival style building include monumental Corinthian order marble columns and pilasters. 18

19 INFORMATION CENTER PARKING FOR NON-CREDIT STUDENTS Parking is available at no cost in the Morgan Street Garage to our students. Please pull a ticket and bring it to class for validation. The validated ticket can be used to exit the garage when handed to the attendant on duty. Directions to Parking Garage Capital Community College is located at 950 Main Street, Hartford. The Morgan Street Parking Garage is located behind the school at 155 Morgan Street. Look for the green glass windows. From Interstate 91 North or South Take Exit 32B (Trumbull St.). At bottom of ramp, turn left onto Market St. Take third left onto Talcott St., then first left into the Morgan Street Garage entrance. From Interstate 84 East (from West Hartford, Farmington, etc.) Take Exit 50 (Main St.). At third traffic light, turn right onto Market St. Take first left onto Talcott St., then first left into the Morgan Street Garage entrance. From Interstate 84 West (from East Hartford, Manchester, Route 2) Take Exit 50 (Main St.). At bottom of ramp, turn left onto Market St. Take second left onto Talcott St., then first left into the Morgan Street Garage entrance. GUEST/VISITOR PARKING Guests and visitors will be validated with prior authorization for parking in the Morgan Street Garage. Please note if you park in the Morgan Street Garage without a college-authorized access ticket, it will be at your own expense. PARKING ACCESS CARD Registered students may be eligible for a free parking access card for the Morgan Street Garage. Students need to obtain an application from the Morgan Street Garage located on the corner of Market and Talcott Streets. Please refer to the student handbook for further information on parking regulations. You may obtain a handbook from the 2nd floor Welcome Center or Office of the Dean of Student Services. If your parking access card does not work, pull a ticket and bring it with your parking access card to the Main Lobby in the College at 950 Main Street for validation MOTORCYCLE POLICY The Hartford Parking Authority DOES NOT PERMIT motorcycles to be housed at the Morgan Street Garage. Motorcycles can be parked in the Columbus Boulevard lot. STUDENT CONDUCT CODE The purpose of the Student Conduct Code is to maintain the general welfare of the College. The College strives to make the campus a place of study and work where people are treated, and treat one another, with respect and courtesy. The College views the student conduct process as a learning experience that can result in growth and personal understanding of one s responsibilities and privileges within both the university community and the greater community.
