1 SECTION BROADLOOM CARPET PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 DESCRIPTION: A. Work of this section is subject to requirements of the Contract Documents including the General Conditions and Supplementary Conditions and applicable portions of Division 1 - General Requirements. B. The work consists of all labor, material and equipment necessary and required to complete all carpet as shown on the drawings and specified herein RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE A. Resilient Base: Section (09655). B. Concrete Floors: Section C. Carpet Tile and 6-0 wide roll goods Section QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer s qualifications: 1. Documented 5 years experience as installer of at least 10 projects of similar size and complexity to this project. 2. Approved by carpet manufacturer. B. Source quality control: Prior to carpet being shipped to project, ensure that manufacturer has tested all carpet and provided written certification that all carpet construction meets or exceeds each minimum requirement of the project specifications. C. Manufacturer s Qualifications: Firm whose carpet materials comply with Use of Materials Bulletin UM-44C published by U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and are currently listed in HUD Certified Products Directory and so identified by imprint on back of carpet SUBMITTALS A. Shop drawings: Minimum scale 1/8 inch equals 1 foot. Indicate: 1. All carpeted areas by shading. 2. All seam locations by heavy line superimposed on shaded areas. 3. Show all edge conditions where carpet joins or abuts dissimilar materials and treatment thereof. 4. Keep cross seams at a minimum. When due to area layout or length of rolls received, place, in the cutting, to avoid occurrence at conspicuous locations, near doors or at pivot points. 5. Note location and type of all reducer strips, metal edgings and nosings. B. Product data: 1. Adhesives. CARPET

2 2. Protection. 3. Carpet. C. Samples: 2 each. 1. Carpet: 12 inches by 18 inches. 2. Edge Stripping: 12 inches long. D. Contractor s description of previous installation, with names, addresses and telephone numbers of Owners and Architects. E. Carpet manufacturer s: 1. Certification, signed by office of company, that all carpet meets or exceeds each minimum project specification requirement. 2. Complete current printed installation instructions for carpet. 3. Complete maintenance and care instructions for carpet. 4. Approval of installer JOB CONDITIONS A. Verify all dimensions at site. Determine and order sufficient quantities and proper kinds of all products to complete the work. B. Work layout: 1. Base layout on using 12 foot wide carpet material. 2. Plan seam locations to: a. Minimize number of seams. b. Ensure that no perpendicular seams occur at doorways, entries or exits. c. Make seams run with traffic flow. d. Center all horizontal doorway seams directly under door. C. Substrate Conditions: No condensation within 48 hours on underside of 4 foot by 4 foot polyethylene sheet, fully taped at perimeter to substrate. D. Substrate Conditions: ph of 9 or less when substrate wetted with potable water and phydrion paper applied DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Transport all carpet to site in rolls, free of all wrinkles and creases. Do not bundle. Deliver, store and handle all materials in a manner to prevent damage to materials and previous construction. Store in a safe, dry location, out of the way of other construction, as directed WARRANTY A. At contract close out, deliver to Architect: year non-pro rated wear warranty year manufacturer s warranty year static warranty under 3.5 KV. 4. Colorfast warranty; light - 10 years, atmospheric contaminants - 5 years. CARPET

3 5. Anti-microbial protection for life of carpet EXTRA MATERIALS A. Deliver extra materials to Owner. Furnish extra materials in compliance with requirements. 1. Carpet: Before installation begins, furnish quantity of full width for each type of material equal to 5 percent of amount installed. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Carpet: Shall be 6 foot wide roll and shall be of types, colors and patterns scheduled on drawings. 1. Acceptable Manufacturers: a. Atlas Carpet b. Bentley c. Patcraft 2. Flammability test requirements: a. Meet or exceed Federal Flammability Standard DOC FF Subject both face and back of carpet to test. Test results shall indicate flame spread of 75 or less, Class Static Control: Maximum 3.0 KV at a 20 percent RH at 70 degrees F. 4. Dye Lots: Yarns of each designated color for each area shall be from a single dye lot. 5. All carpet shall be soil resistant. 6. Carpet shall have 20 pound tuff binding. 7. Carpet shall have permanent anti-microbial protection guaranteed effective for life of carpet. 8. Carpet shall have moisture-barrier backing in 3 rd floor patient areas. 9. Colors and patterns: As selected by Architect from manufacturer s standards. B. Adhesives: Waterproof type recommended and approved by respective carpet manufacturer for use with their materials under site installation conditions. C. Carpet Edge Guards & Transition strips: Refer to drawings for specific product types, dimensions and finishes. D. Seaming Cement: Hot melt adhesive tape or similar product recommended by carpet manufacturer for taping seams and butting cut edges at backing to form secure seams and to prevent pile loss at seams. E. Protection: Non-staining reinforced sisalkraft paper, continuous over carpet installation. Provide tape for seams recommended by protection manufacturer. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 CONDITION OF SURFACES A. Verify that all areas scheduled for carpet are turned over to carpet installer dry, broom-cleaned CARPET

4 and free of grease, oil, paint or other foreign surfaces. Thoroughly inspect all subfloors before commencing work. Notify Architect in writing immediately of all conditions which will prevent producing satisfactory work. Repair floor defects and irregularities prior to installation. Installation of materials constitute Contractor s acceptance of previous construction and his assumption of responsibility for all unacceptable finished work caused by previous conditions PREPARATION A. Ensure that subfloor is smooth, clean and free of all foreign materials before starting installation. B. Maintain a uniform floor temperature of not less than 65 degrees F in all areas to be carpeted for a period of 48 hours before, during and 48 hours after installation. During the same time period, maintain air movement, mechanically or otherwise. C. Clear away debris and scrape up cementitious deposits from concrete surfaces to receive carpet, apply sealer to prevent dusting. D. Patch holes and level to a smooth surface. If previous finish was chemically stripped, reseal concrete. Seal powdery or porous surfaces with sealer recommended by carpet manufacturer. E. Patch holes and cracks. Sand to level. Remove wax. Seal surface with sealer recommended by carpet manufacturer INSTALLATION A. Install all products in accord with manufacturer s current printed instructions: B. Lay carpet in manner that: 1. Will produce a minimum number of seams. 2. Seams that are not obvious in the finished work. 3. Installation is free of visual imperfections, adhesives, seam cement smears and other foreign matter. C. Lay all carpet in a given area, or an adjacent area, in the same direction. Lay with a minimum number of seams in accord with seaming diagrams on accepted shop drawings. D. Except where specifically otherwise indicated, install all carpet so that a minimum number of pieces are used. E. Bond all seams in accord with manufacturer s recommendations. Do not leave seam glue on carpet face. Apply seam glue so that it will be over or as high as primary back. F. Upon completion of carpet work, restrict all traffic in finished areas to normal foot traffic for a minimum of 2 days. G. Unsatisfactory work: Work installed not in accord with manufacturer s instructions, or in a manner unacceptable to Architect, will be deemed unsatisfactory and may result in Architect requiring removal and re-laying at Contractor s expense. H. At doorways, center seams under door in closed position, do not place seams perpendicular to door frame, in direction of traffic through doorway. Do not bridge building expansion joints with continuous carpet. I. Extend carpet under removable flanges and furnishings and into alcoves and closets of each space. J. Provide cutouts where required and bind cut edges where not concealed by protective edge guards or overlapping flanges. K. Install carpet edge guard where edge of carpet is exposed; adhesive apply guards to substrate. L. Install with pattern parallel to walls and borders. CARPET

5 M. Glue-Down Installation: 1. Install carpet by trimming edges, butting cuts with seaming cement and taping and/or sewing seams to provide sufficient strength for stretching and continued stresses during life of carpet. 2. Stretch carpet to provide smooth, ripple free, taut, trim edges; secure to stripping and conceal behind edge of stripping. Use power stretcher where carpet length is greater than 20 feet. 3. Fit sections of carpet prior to application of adhesive. Trim edges and butt cuts with seaming cement. 4. Apply adhesive uniformly to substrate in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. Butt edges tight to form seams without gaps. Roll entire area lightly to eliminate air pockets and ensure uniform bond. Remove adhesive promptly from face of carpet PROTECTION A. Provide and maintain proper protection. B. Place protection continuously with all seams lapped a minimum of 6 inches and taped. Maintain in good condition until project acceptance by Owner, or as otherwise directed. Vacuum clean all carpet prior to placing protection. C. When directed by Architect, completely remove all protection and tape, and legally dispose of offsite. Removal will be required no later than project acceptance EXCESS MATERIALS A. Upon completion of the work, inventory all excess carpet in widths of less than 12 feet, show approximate size of each piece and submit for Owner s inspection. Clearly mark each piece selected by Owner for its retention with type, size, color, pattern and room location. Store in orderly manner where directed CLEAN UP A. Upon completion of work, thoroughly inspect entire installation. Remove all defective work and replace with perfect materials. B. Cut off and trim all loose threads. Remove all visible adhesives, seam cement and scraps. Clean all carpet with an upright beater, bar-type vacuum cleaner. C. Remove all rubbish, debris, containers and all excess materials not selected by Owner for retention and legally dispose of. D. Repair all damage resulting from carpet work. Clean, repair or replace all damage as directed. E. Leave premises in clean, acceptable condition. END OF SECTION CARPET
