1 Our Lady of the Wayside Religious Education Program Dear Parents and Students (incoming 8th Graders for ), Welcome to the Second Year Confirmation Preparation Program! An important part of Confirmation Preparation is the accumulation of 20 service hours or more on the part of each Confirmation Candidate. The giving of service marks the Christian as a true follower of Jesus. We ask students to please be very conscientious about completing these hours. The four categories of people to whom students are asked to minister are: Parish, Home (Family), School, and Community. The idea of Confirmation service is that it is to be extended and performed with no monetary payment. We ask that the service hours be rather evenly extended across the four categories, and that especially Home/Family be limited to 5 hours. The following information regarding Confirmation hours will appear in this year's Parents' and Students' Religious Education Handbook and is to be followed in order for students to meet their Confirmation requirements: Service Projects are chosen by the students (20 hours or more to parish, family, community and school, with a maximum of 5 hours for family). Confirmation certificates will not be issued to students who do not complete their 20 hours of service. There is a Green Log sheet included in this packet so your Confirmation Candidate can begin to record the necessary information for services given. You will note that this record sheet is to be completed and handed in to me by Tuesday, January 31,2017. Enclosed is a list of suggestions for service hours. However, Candidates may choose to do other services. All forms of Christian Service to others are encouraged. If in doubt about the appropriateness of a particular service, please check with Sister Adrienne. I will be calling the boys and girls who offer to help in the Religious Education Office during the summer occasionally in the mornings, from 9:30-11:30. (See attached form to volunteer for this service.) Thank you for your support and cooperation as our intense preparation for Confirmation begins. Very sincerely, Enclosures: Cover Letter Suggestions for Service Hours-yellow Service Hours Log Sheet-green Sign-Up Sheet to do Service Hours for Religious Education Program-buff Flyer from Lutheran Home explaining service hours for Residents during the summer
2 OUR LADY OF THE WAYSIDE SUGGESTIONS FOR CONFIRMATION SERVICE HOURS ALTAR SERVER: Being an altar server is a very important ministry to our Parish. It is an opportunity for you to serve your parish community. By your example of assisting the priests/deacons with pride and attention, you can encourage all the Wayside community to participate more fully in their worship. Credit for 5 hours only (1 hour per Mass served) will be given to students who wish to receive this credit for altar serving. Altar serving credit includes only weekend (Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses) no service hours credit for funerals and weddings. THE LUTHERAN HOME is a housing facility with medical support for senior citizens. Volunteer services offer a wide variety of activities and opportunities for interaction with an older generation. Most of the services involve working directly with the residents. Volunteers are needed to assist residents in participating in various activities for a 2-hour time period. Call Beth Gauthier at or bgauthier@lulife.org. Please see attached flier for information about Orientation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE HELP DURING SUMMER: Assistance is needed to straighten supply closets, unpack and count out textbooks for classes and prepare materials for teachers. This will be done on weekday mornings only. A sign-up sheet is included with this packet. MUSIC MINISTERS lead the assembly in sung prayer at Masses. Choir members and musicians are contributing hours of service. In order to receive service hours you will need to maintain your own service log. If you are interested in any music ministry, please contact Mr. Dan McMahon, Director of Music for our Parish at STUDENT AIDES are needed to assist by welcoming people who will be receiving a flu shot, by serving them a beverage and cookies. This service is being provided through our Parish Nurse, Mrs. Kathy O Neill in the Gathering Space on September 24 and 25, Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. O Neill can be reached at , ext 238 or parishnurse@olwparish.org. ST. MARK S: Our parish collects food and clothing for St. Mark s, a parish in need in Chicago, every month. Students are invited to offer their assistance in gathering these items from parishioners, who drop off the food and/or clothing outside the Rectory garage on the second Sunday of the month after the Masses. The items are delivered to St. Mark s on the third Saturday of the month. Volunteers are greatly needed. Please refer to the Sunday bulletin for information on the contact person. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD: Help out as needed on Sundays during the 9:45 Mass. Younger children leave the Church and go to the Rectory Meeting Room where they listen to the Gospel Reading and do an activity before returning to the Church for the rest of the Mass. Assistants help direct the young children in completing the activity. Please contact Laura Doherty (lauradoherty6@gmail.com) or Liz Broemmelsiek (eks29@aol.com) to volunteer. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Help as a teacher aide, babysitting, or in the kitchen. This is a weeklong project during the week of June from 9:30-12:15 noon Monday through Friday. Please contact Mrs. Katie Utech and Mrs. Megan Bauer via olw.vbs@gmail.com to volunteer. YOUTH MINISTRY SERVICE HOURS: From September to March, Our Lady of the Wayside Jr. High Youth Ministry has monthly service opportunities available. These activities include outreach to Feed My Starving Children, local elderly assisted living facilities, military care packages, preparing sandwiches for the homeless, visiting and serving at a Soup Kitchen, plus much more. A full schedule for both on-campus and off-campus opportunities will come out at the end of summer. Please save some time to add these activities to your next year s planning. All of these activities qualify for Confirmation Service Hours, so please keep posted on what is available throughout the year. Kevin O Connell, Youth Minister, can be reached at youthmin@olwparish.org. There is also information concerning youth ministry activities in the weekly church bulletin. Please refer to the website, and check under Youth Ministry for further details. FFILL-Faith and Friendship Ignite Love of the Lord. Teen assistants are needed to help with activities. You are invited to volunteer and receive service hours. If you are interested, please olwffill@yahoo.com.
