Early Literacy Activities: * Help your child think of words that rhyme with snow. Some words that would work are: go, blow, toe, show. Make up silly rhymes that use these words. * On three cards, draw simple weather pictures: bright yellow sun, dark grey clouds and raindrops, a snowman and snowflakes. Prepare three piles of clothing to match these weather conditions (either actual clothes or pictures): a bathing suit and sunglasses,

2 an umbrella and boots, mittens hat and scarf. Show your child one of the weather pictures and discuss. Then your child to choose the right clothes for that kind of weather. If you decided to get out actual clothing, help your child dress up in these items and act out appropriate weather related activities. Songs and fingerplays to share: Snow Everywhere Snow falls on my head. (wiggle fingers on head) Snow falls on my nose. (wiggle fingers on nose) Snow falls on my boots (wiggle fingers on shoes) But it doesn t touch my toes! (stand and shake head) Snow falls on my hands. (wiggle fingers on top of each hand) Snow falls on my hair. (wiggly fingers stroke hair) Snow falls on my shoulders. (wiggle fingers on shoulders) Snow falls everywhere! (wiggle fingers all through the air!) Snow is Falling Snow is falling, falling down (wiggle fingers) Snow is falling to the ground Snowing, snowing (say slowly and softly while wiggling) Flurries, flurries (wiggle and say really fast) BLIZZARD! (say fast and loudly while frantically wiggling fingers!) Dance Like Snowflakes (Sung to Are You Sleeping) Dance like snowflakes, dance like snowflakes In the air, in the air Whirling, twirling snowflakes Whirling, twirling snowflakes Here and there, here and there Snowflakes (Sung to Sailing, Sailing) Snowflakes, snowflakes Falling to the ground Each one rests so gently They never make a sound Snowflakes, snowflakes Are so pure and white The special thing about them is No two are alike Snowflakes Falling Down (Sung to Row, Row, Row Your Boat) Snowflakes falling down Falling to the ground Big white fluffy flakes That do not make a sound Two Little Snowflakes Way up high in the winter sky, 2 little snowflakes caught my eye. Down to the ground they fell without a sound. And before very long, It was snowing all around.

3 Winter Wonderland (To the tune of Ring Around the Rosie) Winter Winter Wonderland Pockets Full of Mittens Snowflakes, Snowflakes We All Fall Down! Snowball Poem I made myself a snowball Just as perfect as could be. I thought I d keep it as a pet And let it sleep with me I gave it some pajamas And a pillow for it s head. Then, last night it ran away, But first it wet the bed! Gotcha! Here is a Hill Here is a hill (make a hill with your left arm) All covered with snow We'll get on our sled And ZOOM! Down we'll go. (swoop right hand downward) Snowflakes Falling Down Snowflakes, snowflakes falling down, (flutter fingers downward.) All around, on the ground. (make spreading movement with hands.) Get the sled and climb so high, (walk fingers up arm.) Down we'll go, slippety-slide! (slide hand down arm.) The First Snow Watching. Hoping. Sighting the first flake. Watching. Wondering. What will I make? A snowman, a fort? Angels in the snow? A thousand flakes are falling. Let's go! Let's go!! Let's go!!! ~Submitted by Cheryl's Sweethearts ChildCare **Some ideas in this handout were borrowed from The Perry Public Library website:
