1 drawing & painting I: Sachem Art Department - Scope & Sequence Goal of the Drawing & Painting I Course: The overall purpose of Drawing & Painting I is to further build upon the basic drawing and painting skills students learned in Studio in Art. Students will be expected to master basic drawing techniques, while learning more advanced skills and mediums through a variety of drawing assignments. Students will create, draw and design using mediums such as pencil, pen, colored pencil, and charcoal with a new focus on paint. Projects will include such assignments such as still life drawings, drawing organic objects, graphic design, and figure drawing. All leading to a more skillful, well-rounded fine artist. This course will help prepare the fine art student s portfolio for college admissions and is a pre-requisite to Drawing & Painting 1I and Advanced Placement Studio in Art. A student enrolled in Drawing & Painting I can expect to learn the following within a full school year: How to accurately draw a still life and other related objects. Illustrating realistic space and proportion within their drawings. Proper use of materials: pencil, colored pencil, pen, charcoal, watercolor/tempera, and acrylic paint. Mixing paints and basic color theory. Realistic color application and blending. Creating realistic values. Proper painting supply maintenance and clean up. Advanced composition Attendance > Students are expected to follow the school s attendance policy. Unexcused absences will negatively affect the student s participation grade. In accordance with school policy, more than nine unexcused absences in a semester will result in denial of credit for the course. Class Participation > Poor attendance, late assignments, tardiness, misuse of materials, breaking classroom rules, unsatisfactory amount of time spent on projects, and uncooperative behavior will negatively affect the student s class participation grade. Grading > The student s final average for each marking period will be calculated based upon the following percentages: Projects 80% Class Participation 20% Midterm & Final Exam > There will be a midterm and final project. Each will be calculated as separate grades that will be averaged together with the student s 4 quarter grades. (Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4 + Mid + Final = X divided by 6).

Measuring and drawing realistic objects Achieving a full range of values in pencil 1st Quarter Assessment: Black and White Still Life with Light Source Within the first 10 weeks of instruction, students will have built upon their previous Studio in Art skills to create more realistic, accurately drawn still life arrangements and objects, and the ability to create a full range of black and white values within their illustrations. elements of art principles of design Interpret - Students will create realistic illustrations based on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. such as: pencil, color pencil, charcoal, and acrylic paint. - Students will study, critique and analyze artists such as: Rembrandt, van Gogh, Munch and other famous masters.

Midterm Assessment: Geometric Still Life with Value in Pencil illustrating value Mastering pencil Mastering pen Mastering color application Self Portraits master pen and marker illustration techniques by practicing their still life drawings. Students will be able to apply value in pen and marker through hatching, cross hatching, and stippling. Drawing in realistic proportion and color. portrait self portrait - Students will create realistic illustrations and portraits based on the study and proportions of the human body. such as: pencil, color pencil, charcoal, and acrylic paint. - Students will study, critique and analyze artists such as: Rembrandt, van Gogh, Munch and other famous masters.

Students will achieve color and value by accurately and properly mixing and applying paint, with a focus on realism. 3rd Quarter Assessment: Still Life with Value in Paint graphic design layout resolution Photoshop printing press Guttenburg letter press printing plates - Students will create realistic illustrations and advertising pieces based the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. such as: pencil, color pencil, charcoal, marker, and acrylic paint. - Students will study, critique and analyze artists such as: Dali, Calder, Toulouse Lautrec, Saul Bass and other famous masters in art and design.
