1 Communications 6: MAP & Paragraph Writing Use the notes at Mrs. Ehlersʼ BEA website or the video at Moodle (Comm 6) to fill out the worksheet/notes below. Keep these notes in your Communications 6 folder for the unit test this quarter. What is Communication? Communication is When we transfer meaning we send a to another or (an audience) for a (purpose) We might send our message to one person or many. We might send messages by using body movements, facial expressions, sounds or spoken words...or through various forms of writing. Why Communicate? People communicate for three basic reasons: For For To There are many types of writing! These purposes for communication are found in our writing too: writing: news articles, memos, friendly and business letters, informative paragraphs, compare and contrast essays, etc. writing: editorials, opinion paragraphs, persuasive speeches, etc. writing: stories, plays, journals, etc. You can write by hand or by using technology. What Makes Good Writing? Many factors can help our writing be the best it can be from the planning to writing & finally after publishing : Thinking about the (your main point & details) Thinking about the (who will get the message) Thinking about the (why youʼre writing) These three things are also known as M.A.P. = message, audience & purpose! They are your guide to better communication!

2 The Message: Thinking about the message means... Deciding on a good Planning out the &/or sequence of events Deciding how you will (or wrap up) your message Organizing your ideas Choosing clear and/or interesting words that the audience can, and. The Message: Think about it! How would it help you to think about what you want to say (or write) before you say (or write) it? You can choose just the right words so people can & be. You can organize your ideas in a logical manner so people donʼt misunderstand you & arenʼt or. Thinking about what we will say helps & it makes our ideas & easier to. The Audience: Thinking about the audience means... Making choices about,, and more that will help your audience understand, remember and enjoy... or at least want to continue reading your message! Choosing the types of words and phrases that best fit the you want to send and the for writing. The Audience: Think About It How would your writing change if you were writing to... your very best friend? the school principal? someone you donʼt know? a relative? a business person? we write to will help us choose how we plan, write, edit & publish our message. The Purpose: This is the youʼre writing. The main reasons for any communication (including writing) are: To Inform: To Persuade: sharing an, getting someone to something or something you want

3 To Entertain: for or Purpose can also include the for which youʼre writing, such as: school assignments, a social event or celebration, a contest, to get a job & more! Thinking about the purpose can help you decide what type of to use and how you will your ideas. Purpose: Think About It How would your writing change if you...wanted to get a good grade on an assignment? wanted to give clear directions? were asking for something you really wanted? were just trying to make someone laugh? we write to and weʼre writing to them will help us choose how we plan, write, edit & publish our message. The Stop Light Method: A basic paragraph should include the following: Tips for Writing a Basic Paragraph A that tells the topic so your audience knows what you main point is. At least THREE clear, organized that stick to the topic. A that wraps up the paragraph either reminding the reader of your main point or telling them what they can do with it. The Stop Light Method: You will need a green, yellow & red colored pencil for this part! Let s use this method to pick out the necessary parts of a good paragraph in the two pieces of writing below. First, read each paragraph. When you re done, underline the topic sentence in each paragraph in green, underline any detail sentences in yellow, and underline the closing sentence in red. Paragraph 1: Fall is my favorite time of year. The fall air is crisp and cool. Pumpkins decorate doorsteps up and down my street. The smell of fallen leaves fills the air. That is why I like fall so much. Paragraph 2: When I grow up, I want to be an astronaut. Astronauts explore places where people have never been before. They make new discoveries about our solar system. Some astronauts even walk in space. Being an astronaut would be fun and challenging work.

4 Proofreading: Itʼs also important to find and fix in any type of writing we do! It shows in your work. It helps the reader and you. Common errors to look for include: Common Proofreading Marks: Fill in the chart with the correct proofreading mark! Symbol Meaning Example Insert a comma Insert an apostrophe Insert something Insert quotation marks Insert a period Delete something Transpose (switch the order) Close a space Add a space Begin a new paragraph No new paragraph needed Capitalize a letter Make letter lowercase Check spelling Use a better word

5 Review Communication is the (a message) from one being to another. To help communication, we should think about MAP:, & before, during, & after we write. There are three major reasons we communicate:,, &. Use the stoplight method to help you structure paragraphs: sentence, sentences, sentence. Remember to to find and fix errors in every type of writing! Be sure to keep and review these notes to help you this quarter. You can also use them to study alone or with a friend.
