1 Student POSTER CONTEST GUIDELINES Promoting Excellence Among Historically Underrepresented Groups: Closing the STEM Achievement Gap Through Educator Preparation Friday, April 11 th from 3pm 4pm Poster Session POSTER TOPICS must relate to the symposium theme. Topics may include but not limited to: -Innovative Math and/or Science Teaching Strategies and/or Research Models (Pk-12) -Math and/or Science Lesson Demonstration Models/Explanations (Pk-12) -Math, Science or Technology Integration with other content areas Research, Models or Best Practices (Pk-12) -Programs, Resources and Techniques to improve Math and Science Achievement (Pk-12) Poster Setup Requirements: The poster contest will be held in Bozeman Education Building, Second Floor. Poster session presenters are required to setup their presentation by Friday, April 11 th between (10am-12 noon). Posters will be displayed and judged on Friday, April 11 th from 3pm-4pm. What a poster should include: Title: project title Author: your full name, major, faculty advisor (if applicable) and department Purpose (or Objectives or Introduction) Methods or Interventions or Techniques or Strategies Results or Research Findings Discussion/Explanations Summary/Conclusions

2 Acknowledgments: include any sources or funding Ways of Making a Poster Display: -Tri-fold Display Board (traditional way of making a poster) -Print out segments on a regular printer and cut/paste them onto matte board -Can use any software program (MS Word, PowerPoint, etc.) Tips for Designing a Poster Display: Keep it Simple! -arrange your material in a logical progression -arrange materials in columns -don t try to add too much on to the poster (be brief and clear) PRIZES: The top three (3) winners will receive prizes. GENERAL INFORMATION: 1. We will provide each of the 10 finalists with a table and a tri-fold poster board. 2. If you plan to have handouts, please bring a minimum of 50 copies. Reminder: Equipment using electrical support or other audio-visual equipment MAY NOT BE USED in a poster session. You may choose to bring a battery powered laptop or other devices. You must bring any supplies you may need (tape, felt-tipped markers, tacks, etc.) 3. All topics must relate to the symposium theme. **During the poster session, presenters are expected to remain at their individual displays to be available for questions and informal discussion of their poster content.

3 Evaluation Criteria for Poster Competition Posters presented will be judged according to the following criteria: Research Novelty and innovation Relevance to STEM education Quality of research design Clarity of poster content and poster design Verbal explanations about the poster Course Exposition Completeness: Degree to which poster addresses course as a whole Degree to which poster highlights student learning Clarity of poster content and poster design Verbal explanations about the poster Program Exposition (if presenting a program or resource) Completeness: Degree to which poster addresses program element as a whole Degree to which poster highlights student engagement in a program element Clarity of poster content and poster design Verbal explanations about the poster

4 POSTER CONTEST CONCEPT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS REGISTRATION Due Date: Monday, March 31 st by 5pm SEND REGISTRATION ENTRY to GUIDELINES - Only one person per POSTER Entry is permitted - Poster Contest Concept Entry must be one page or less (doublespaced, 12 font, and Times New Roman) - Please do NOT submit your FULL presentation just a brief overview addressing the items below - Any Poster Contest Brief Concept Entry over one page will be disqualified Submit the following information as your registration entry to the poster contest: 1 -Title: project title 2- Author: your full name, major, faculty advisor (if applicable) and 3 -Purpose (or Objectives or Introduction) 4 -Methods or Interventions or Techniques or Strategies 5 -Results or Research Findings 6 -Discussion/Explanations 7 -Summary/Conclusions 8 -Acknowledgments: include any sources of funding
