3 Mr David Jenkins performing PEA surgery Milestone for heart centre Papworth scores excellent in PEAT annual inspection Results published by the NHS Information Centre show that Papworth Hospital has scored excellent in two out of the three areas assessed by the annual Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) assessment, and good in the remaining one. The score for food and privacy and dignity was five, excellent and for environment, the score was four, good. The PEAT assessments are carried out by NHS staff together with patients, patient representatives and members of the public. Elizabeth Horne, Director of Human Resources at Papworth Hospital said: We are delighted with these results, which show that we are committed to not only giving our patients the best clinical care possible but also, in partnership with Sodexo, to making their stay here at Papworth Hospital as safe and comfortable as we can. We continually monitor all aspects of the patient journey to ensure that we maintain and, where possible, improve our high standards. Ms Horne continued: This year we were joined by an External Validator who commented: It was a pleasure to be part of the PEAT team, from my view Papworth Hospital is well run, clean, maintained to a high standard and the patient food was also very good. Remember to let us know if you move house so that we can amend our database accordingly. You can do this by writing to: The Corporate Affairs Office, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Papworth Everard, Cambridge CB23 3RE or ing corporate.affairs@papworth.nhs.uk Papworth Hospital doctors have undertaken a record number of the highly-complex Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) operations. Papworth is the only hospital in the UK commissioned to perform this surgery and, in 2011, they carried out 130 PEA operations - more than any other centre in the world. To date 850 of these operations have been carried out at Papworth Hospital. The surgery which involves cooling a patient to 20 degrees and completely emptying the body s circulation of blood, can take up to 10 hours. Its purpose is to remove clots from the pulmonary arteries due to a condition called chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). We are delighted that we are able to offer more and more patients this life-saving operation, which, although technically difficult, offers the only real cure for patients with CTEPH. The survival rate for 2011 was nearly 98%. explained Mr David Jenkins, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and leader of the pulmonary endarterectomy programme in the UK. Papworth Pulse 2

4 Action Mesothelioma Day Pictured below are members of the Papworth Mesothelioma Support Group with Stephen Bridge, Chief Executive, marking Action Mesothelioma Day on 6 July by releasing balloons and doves. The Papworth Hospital Mesothelioma Support Group provides support and advice to patients and carers from all over the east of England. Mr Sandy McNaughton, Mesothelioma patient at Papworth Hospital, said: People know about lung cancer but not about mesothelioma. We released balloons and doves in memory of the people who have died from mesothelioma. The Mesothelioma Support Group meets at Hemingford Abbots Village Hall. For more information please contact Gerry Slade, Mesothelioma Specialist Nurse on Dr Robert Rintoul, Chris Knighton, Neroli Sharp, Gerry Slade and Pat Wood at the House of Commons New research facility to help tackle mesothelioma Papworth Team leads MesobanK A team from Papworth Hospital, including patients and staff, went to the House of Commons on 28 June for the launch of a new research facility to be led by Papworth Hospital. The British Lung Foundation and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund have launched the MesobanK, led by Papworth Hospital - the first of its kind in Europe - to give researchers and doctors ready access to the tissue and anonymised clinical information required for vital research into the nature and treatment of the terminal cancer, mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects the thin membranes lining the chest (pleural mesothelioma) or, less commonly, the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Dr Robert Rintoul, Consultant Physician, said: In research terms, mesothelioma has been a neglected cancer for far too long. The opening of the MesobanK could really help change this, by making it quicker, easier and cheaper for researchers to undertake the kind of research that could deliver real advances in our understanding and treatment of this devastating disease. 3 Foundation Trust Newsletter

5 Patients give Papworth Hospital top scores in national survey Patients give Papworth Hospital high scores Papworth Hospital has achieved excellent results following the Care Quality Commissions (CQC s) national inpatient survey of 161 acute and specialist NHS trusts, becoming the best performing trust in the Midlands and East Strategic Health Authority and the seventh best in the country. The survey asked patients what they thought about different aspects of the care and treatment they received whilst at Papworth Hospital. In eight out of the nine sections of questions Papworth Hospital scored better compared with other trusts and about the same as other trusts in the remaining one. What our staff say In this national survey of more than 70,000 inpatients, Papworth Hospital scores were consistently high with questions Did you have confidence and trust in the doctor treating you? and Did you have confidence and trust in the nurse treating you? scoring 9.5 and 9.2 out of 10, respectively. Patients scored the question Overall did you feel that you were treated with respect and dignity whilst in hospital 9.5 out of 10. The hospital was also particularly praised by patients on questions relating to the cleanliness of their hospital room or ward, scoring 9.4 out of 10. The findings of the 2011 national staff survey show that staff responding to the survey rated Papworth as one of the top four best performing Trusts in the country which scored highly on standard of care, staff motivation and feeling valued by colleagues. The overall staff engagement score for staff at Papworth Hospital is This has significantly improved from 3.78 in 2010 and is above the national 2011 average for acute specialist trusts of Transplant event More than 60 transplant patients and their carers, came to Papworth Hospital on 13 July to take part in the Transplant Patient Involvement Event. The event hosted by the transplant team aimed to hear from patients about what they thought was good about the service they received and also areas for improvement. The event focussed on all areas of the transplant journey, from assessment through to post transplant care. Patients attending included those waiting for a transplant, those who had received a transplant and those who have received a ventricular assist device. Mr Stephen Bridge, Chief Executive, welcomed patients and staff to the event and Mr Steven Tsui, Clinical Director, Transplant Services and Consultant Surgeon, set the scene both in terms of the national and local transplantation service. Feedback from the event will be used by the transplant team to improve the service they provide to patients. Papworth Pulse 4
