2 1 - REMOVING ALL NON-PERMANENT DECK FITTINGS Remove all fittings and equipment that might interfere with the application or which might be damaged by dust, paint or glue. Avoid dismantling more complicated fittings such as winches, tracks, chain plates, hinges etc. - cover instead if necessary. This will save a lot of unnecessary time spent reassembling and sealing after application. Avoid installing TBS next to or under fittings that undergo heavy loads. TBS is a soft material that may cause the fitting to become loose after time or may tear the TBS. Conclusion: winches, tracks, chain plates, pad eyes, windlass... must be installed directly onto the deck and not on the TBS. 2 - DRAWING THE TEMPLATES AND CUTTINGS THE TBS 1- Making the templates Using a thick and transparent polythene sheet, it is extremely easy to stencil out the templates. Use a double-sided adhesive tape to stick down your templates when drawing. Draw out a set of templates for the port side and then turn them over for the starboard side. Mark any variations for the starboard side on to a separate sheet using a different colour pen - you will notice that boats are rarely symmetrical. Label each template and cut to size. Aesthetic advice: - Always use the same tool for curves or angles (a tin for instance). - Never butt edges together as these joints can be extremely visible - leave a neat gap between each piece. - Do not draw sharp edges - always round off corners. - Draw the most streamlined pieces possible. - Avoid a chequered tile effect. - Cutting around deck fittings (hatches, winches, padeyes etc.) following their natural shape can look very effective. - Do not hesitate to ask any artistic friends for advice and make a full simulation using your templates. - Enjoy yourself and allow plenty of time for the job. 2

3 2- Measuring the quantity of material required TBS anti-skid covering has a maximum width of 1.28m and can be ordered in 5m, 10m, 15m or 20m lengths. Position your templates in a 1.28m wide space in the most economical way to get the required length. Order the quantity you need in a single batch of production allowing a reasonable margin for error. Approximately one tube of 310cc edge sealant is required per 10m x 1.28m roll of TBS. 3- Cutting the material Transfer the shape of your templates on to the back of the TBS non-skid covering (smooth side) by stencilling around them with a pen. With a sharp knife or scissors, carefully cut the panels. For aesthetic, comfort and longevity reasons, we recommend to chamfer the top edges to a 45E angle using a medium grade sandpaper. 3 - PREPARATION OF THE SUPPORT Whatever the type of support, preparation is the same as for painting. The following information reflects the suggestions of paint manufacturers. We strongly advise you to follow the technical instructions of each individual product manufacturer. It is imperative that the surface to be covered is fully cured and no solvent remains in the paint, epoxy etc. This can cause bubbles at a later date. Allow ample time for the solvent to evaporate, this can take weeks depending on the environmental conditions and type of product. Always refer to the manufacturer s instructions. * Aluminium : 1- Mechanical or chemical (etch with phosphoric acid) cleaning. 2- Rinse with fresh water. 3- Remove any traces of grease. 4- Apply an epoxy primer. 5- Fill and smooth any cracks or bumps if necessary. 6- Apply 2 or 3 layers of a two component polyurethane paint with the contrasting colour of your choice. To save on cost, it is not necessary to cover the areas totally where the TBS covering will be applied (just the edges and areas between the panels). However, in small areas painting the whole deck may be easier. 3

4 * Steel : 1- Etching or sanding. 2- Rinse with fresh water. 3- Remove any traces of grease. 4- Apply an epoxy primer. 5- Fill and smooth any cracks or bumps if necessary. 6- Apply 2 or 3 layers of a two component polyurethane paint with the contrasting colour of your choice. To save on cost, it is not necessary to cover the areas totally where the TBS covering will be applied (just the edges and areas between the panels). However, in small areas painting the whole deck may be easier. * Wood : 1- Clean with fresh water and household detergent. 2- Apply an epoxy primer if necessary. 3- Fill and smooth any cracks or bumps if necessary. 4- Apply 2 or 3 layers of a two component polyurethane paint with the contrasting colour of your choice. To save on cost, it is not necessary to cover the areas totally where the TBS covering will be applied (just the edges and areas between the panels). However, in small areas painting the whole deck may be easier. * Polyester gel coat with a moulded pattern (diamond point, marbling etc.) 1- Mask off the areas to be covered. 2- Sand down the areas to be covered using an orbital sanding tool or similar until the surface is flat but not Ashiny smooth@. This procedure should only remove gel coat and not damage the fibreglass beneath it. 3- In case of cracks, flaking or deep stars it is necessary to carry out repairs using a suitable gel coat repair kit. 4- If the gel coat of the deck flours (white marks when passing the hand on the surface), apply 2 or 3 layers of a two-component polyurethane paint. 4

5 4 - INSTALLATION OF THE COVERING important : Before and during the gluing (as for the process of painting) ensure that: a) The ambient temperature remains between 10E and 30EC. b) The deck temperature remains the same as the ambient temperature. c) The relative hydrometry level is below 70%. d) There are no traces of humidity on the deck. 1- Position the TBS panels on the deck and mask off the edges with masking tape leaving a gap of 1-2mm around the edge of the TBS. Number panels/deck for easy identification. 2- Remove the TBS sheets. 3- Slightly dull the surface to glue (120 grain) not shiny smooth. 4- Remove all traces of dust and grease (using acetone or trichloroethylene). Do not use white spirit as this leaves an oily film. Care should be taken that plastic moulded substrates are free from the presence of release agents. 5- We recommend Sikaflex 221 for gluing the TBS to the support. This is a very efficient one-component polyurethane mastic that has been very successfully used for this application by many leading boatbuilders (DEHLER, ETAP). Only a very thin layer of Sikaflex is required to form a good bond. With a serrated spatula (no.0), apply less than 100 g/m5 of Sikaflex 221 on the deck, spreading evenly in the opposite direction to which you intend to lay the covering. Then remove the excess glue by pushing the spatula across your original lines and in the same direction as you intend to lay the covering (see picture below). It is very important not to apply too much glue as empty pockets can be created during the smoothing out of the TBS, by the evacuation of excess glue forming air bubbles later. 6- Roll up the panel to be applied and correctly position one edge of the TBS to the deck. Once in position slowly unroll the TBS covering onto the glue applying light hand pressure to evacuate all traces of air. For large panels you will need at least two people for this job - one or two holding and unrolling the material and one person positioning and smoothing off. 5

6 7- This mastic glue sticks rapidly, however you can reposition your sheet freely for about thirty minutes. important : TBS 16 is by design a soft flexible material, so it is important not to generate areas of strain that may create air bubbles as it shrinks back to it=s original shape or cause the panel to stretch temporarily out of it=s original dimensions. Avoid direct sunlight or heat during application as this may also cause TBS 16 to expand slightly. 8- Remove the masking tape as soon as the panel is in final position. 9- Ensure that the edges are glued. There is no need to put weights on the material during the gluing stage. However, if the edges show signs of lifting, carefully tape them down with self adhesive tape. 10- With a non-fluffy rag and White Spirit, clean the surplus of Sikaflex around the edges while it is still fresh. During this process you can easily create a small edge sealant almost invisibly which will protect the borders of the TBS covering. You can also clean any excess Sikaflex from the TBS covering using this rag and White Spirit exclusively. The sooner you do it, the better. 11- Leave for 48hrs before walking on your new decks. 5 - EDGE SEALING For added security, we recommend the application of a UV resistant edge sealant such as MS Polymer. This sealing process is simple and results in an attractive finish to your new decks, reducing the possibility of edges lifting over time. We suggest you practice on scrap material first to perfect the technique. 1- Allow the Sikaflex to dry for 48hrs. 2- Mask off a 4mm gap around the TBS and lightly scotch bright, then degrease using acetone. Allow at least 1hr for the acetone to completely evaporate. 3- Apply a smooth bead of edge sealant to just below the height of the TBS. Smooth off using a 19mm radiusing ball (or similar). 4- Remove the masking tape straight after application. 5- Any excess sealant on the TBS can easily be removed by allowing the sealant to dry for 1-4hrs (depending on temperature) then rubbing off using a pencil rubber (or similar). 6

7 NB: If your decks have recesses for the deck covering it is essential to completely fill the edge gaps with edge sealant. This protects the TBS edge from water and dirt, which tends to sit in the edge gap for long periods and can be difficult to clean. 6 - REASSEMBLING OF THE FITTINGS After 48hrs refit any deck fittings removed before application. NB: This information is given in good faith and results from our experience. They do not prejudice our liability. In case of any doubt, we recommend testing a small area first.
