1 Whole Group Instruction; Whole Class Guided Practice; Independent Practice; Formal Assessment (Ms. Kesling) TEKS/Standards: Homework: None (13) Writing/Writing Process. Students use elements of the writing process (revising and editing) to compose text. Students are expected to: (C) revise to clarify meaning and achieve logical organization by rearranging the words by adding transitional words; and (D) edit for grammar, mechanics, and spelling. Sentence Fragments, Run- On Sentences(, and Inferences*) *(The Inferences portion of class will be covered by Ms. Kesling) Objective(s): *Students will identify errors in sentence structure (fragments and run-on sentences) and make necessary corrections. *Students will rewrite sentences for correct grammar usage. Materials: Teacher s: Overhead, Review/Warm-Up PowerPoint Transparencies, Whiteboard, Markers, Sentences Worksheet, Dividers, and Timer; A Spring Rain Packet (Kesling) Students : Paper and Pen/Pencil, and Personal Book (if necessary) Total Time: 25 of 90 minutes Activity & Time Student Procedures Teacher Procedures I. WARM-UP/ Anticipatory Set Subject/Predicate, Fragments, and Run-On Sentences Review Whole Group Instruction/ Whole Class Guided Practice Objective(s): *Students will review the elements of a complete sentence. *Students will practice identifying and correcting sentence fragments and run-ons. *Students will examine and listen draw students attention to the overhead. explain to students that they will be

They will identify fragment/run-on sentence errors. *When called on, students will walk up to the board, pick up a marker, and correct the sentence so that it makes grammatical sense. Students might be asked to explain their corrections. reviewing sentence fragments and run-on sentences today and that for the warm-up, as a whole class, they will identify errors in sample sentences. *Before beginning the warm-up, the teacher will project (Lights will be off and introductory transparency will have already been projected before class began) the All sentences have a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE... review PowerPoint transparency. read from the transparency, formatively assessing students by calling on individual students and asking them questions like What is a subject? and What is a predicate?. pull up the overhead,

4 a few seconds to look over the slide before calling on a student to answer on the whiteboard. *When giving directions, the teacher will suggest that students edit the sentences using a sheet of paper and a pen/pencil to help them visualize the grammatically correct version of the sentence. explain the correct answer (revision) and alternate ways to revise fragments/runons if students do not offer them aloud. erase students answers from the previous transparency and repeat this warmup activity process with the Played basketball... and Soap is an interesting... transparencies. turn off the projector, and

5 turn the lights back on. II. LESSON/ACTIVITIES 1 st Activity Sentences Worksheet Independent Practice *Note: This assignment will be graded based on their understanding/proficiency of the worksheet; all questions should be answered. Students will be penalized for answering questions incorrectly. Each question will be worth about 12 points. This will count as a daily grade. 15 minutes Sentences Worksheet and Timer Student Material: Sentences Worksheet, Divider, Pen/Pencil, and Personal Book (if necessary) 2 nd Activity Inferencing Assessment Objective(s): Students will review fragments and run-on sentences rules by completing their Fragments and Run-on Sentences worksheet independently. *Students will place their dividers up on their desk. *Students will receive Fragments and Run-On Sentences worksheet from teacher. * Students will silently work to complete the Fragments and Run-On Sentences worksheet. *When students complete their Fragments and Run-On Sentences worksheet, they will raise their hand to indicate they have finished the assignment and will wait patiently for the teacher to pick up their worksheet. *Upon turning in their worksheet, students will proceed to complete the next assignment (announced and issued by Ms. Kesling). *If no assignment is announced, students will proceed to read silently or work an assignment for another class. Students will complete A Spring Rain independently (and silently) for a test grade. instruct students that they will be completing a worksheet independently and quietly because it will be turned in for a daily grade (See Note in first column of this activity for more details about grading). direct students to place their dividers (normally under their desks) on top of their desk. hand out Fragments and Run-on Sentences worksheet. move around the room, monitoring progress and answering questions (if appropriate). pick up students worksheet upon completion. Ms. Kesling will be teaching this section of the class.

6 Formal Assessment 25 minutes A Spring Rain Packet Student Materials: Pen/Pencil She will explain the grading behind this task. 3 rd Activity Completing OEQ Essays Independent Practice 40 minutes None Student Materials: Paper (from previous class) and Pen/Pencil Students will complete their essay from the previous class. Ms. Kesling will be teaching this section of the class. I will be walking around the room, monitoring progress and answering students questions as needed. ILL/504/SpEd accommodations: Students will have aids in the classroom to help them participate in class. Some students may require extra time to complete worksheets, or might need to be separated from classmates in order to have more space to concentrate and be productive. Assessment: Students will be formally assessed based on their understanding/proficiency of the Sentences and A Spring Rain worksheets. The former will be a daily grade, and the latter will be a test grade. Essays will be graded holistically in accordance to TAKS standards (Score range: 0-3).
