8 Context of the prophecies Matthew 24:1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. Luke 21:5 Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said,

11 The critical questions Matthew 24:3 Luke 21:7 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age? So they asked Him, saying, Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?

14 Answer to the When question Matthew 24:15-28 Luke 21:20-24 when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand) v. 15 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. v. 20

15 Abomination of Desolation Daniel 9:24-27 records the Seventy Weeks Prophecy, which, based on the year-day principle, began in 457 BC and ended in A.D. 34 This prophecy predicts the ministry of Jesus, including His death

16 Daniel 9:26-27 And after the sixty-two weeks [part of the 70 weeks] Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come [Roman prince Titus, son of emperor Vespasian]

17 Daniel 9:26-27 Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.[destruction of Jerusalem and the temple] The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

20 Abomination of Desolation When the Roman army under prince Titus attacked Jerusalem in A.D. 70, they elevated their pagan symbols in the sacred precinct of the temple Titus and his army desecrated the temple and made the city of Jerusalem desolate

21 Answer to the When question When you see the Romans standing in the temple precincts, know that the temple and the city are about to be destroyed Or, as the Gospel of Luke puts it, when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its desolation is near. (Luke 21:20) Jesus prophecy was fulfilled in A.D. 70

23 The fall of Jerusalem Concerning the fall of Jerusalem, Jesus says And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Luke 21:24)

24 Josephus, the 1 st century A.D. Jewish Historian says more than one million people perished in the attack, and about 97,000 were taken captive

25 Fate of the Faithful Jesus told his followers that those who are in Judea at that time should flee, and those who are not should not enter the city (Matthew 24:16; Luke 21:21) During the brief period when the Roman siege on Jerusalem was lifted, all the Christians fled the city and settled in the city of Pella (17 miles south of the Lake of Gallee)

26 Fate of the Faithful Jesus prophetic message to leave Judea was no secret, however only His faithful followers heeded his message of warning While the faithful did not know the exact date of the event, they recognized the signs!

27 Answer to the What question Much like the situation just prior to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the age will be preceded by signs that the faithful will heed and understand In Matthew 24:4-14; and Luke 21:8-19; 25-28, Jesus outlines the signs that will herald his return and the end of the age

34 Persecution, Deception, & Waning Faith Faithful hated and killed (Mt. 24:9; Lk. 21:11, 16-17) False christs and false prophets (Mt. 24:4-5, 11, 23-26; Lk. 21:8) These signs have be fulfilled from early Christian history to the present
