Jesus Fulfilled Prophecies Matthew 24 and Luke 21
Fascination with doomsday
The Last Days are Here Again The Last Days are Here Again: A History of the End Times by Richard Kyle
Bear in mind Biblical prophecy is not given to satisfy our curiosity about the future Biblical prophecy affirms God s sovereignty, God s character of love, and God s involvement in time/history to save humanity
Jesus Fulfilled Prophecies
Jesus Major Prophetic Teachings Matthew 24 Mark 13 // Matthew 24 Luke 17:20-37; 21 records most of material found in Mathew 24 and Mark 13; contains some information not found in the other Synoptic Gospels
Prophecies in Matthew 24 and Luke 21
Context of the prophecies Matthew 24:1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. Luke 21:5 Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said,
Context of the prophecies Matthew 24:2 Luke 21:6 And Jesus said to them, Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down. These things which you see the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.
Context of the prophecies View of the temple compound Prediction of the destruction of the temple
The critical questions Matthew 24:3 Luke 21:7 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age? So they asked Him, saying, Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?
Central concerns Time of the destruction of Jerusalem (when?) The signs that will precede the Coming of Christ and the end of the age (what?)
Bear in mind The disciples as well as many others in their time expected the end of the age in their generation It is possible that the disciples believed that the destruction of Jerusalem/temple would immediately precede the return of Christ/end of the age
Answer to the When question Matthew 24:15-28 Luke 21:20-24 when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand) v. 15 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. v. 20
Abomination of Desolation Daniel 9:24-27 records the Seventy Weeks Prophecy, which, based on the year-day principle, began in 457 BC and ended in A.D. 34 This prophecy predicts the ministry of Jesus, including His death
Daniel 9:26-27 And after the sixty-two weeks [part of the 70 weeks] Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come [Roman prince Titus, son of emperor Vespasian]
Daniel 9:26-27 Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.[destruction of Jerusalem and the temple] The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
Daniel 9:26-27 Then he [the Messiah] shall confirm a covenant with many for one week [final part of the 70 Weeks prophecy]; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering [the death of the Messiah].
Daniel 9:26-27 And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.
Abomination of Desolation When the Roman army under prince Titus attacked Jerusalem in A.D. 70, they elevated their pagan symbols in the sacred precinct of the temple Titus and his army desecrated the temple and made the city of Jerusalem desolate
Answer to the When question When you see the Romans standing in the temple precincts, know that the temple and the city are about to be destroyed Or, as the Gospel of Luke puts it, when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its desolation is near. (Luke 21:20) Jesus prophecy was fulfilled in A.D. 70
A.D. 70
The fall of Jerusalem Concerning the fall of Jerusalem, Jesus says And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Luke 21:24)
Josephus, the 1 st century A.D. Jewish Historian says more than one million people perished in the attack, and about 97,000 were taken captive
Fate of the Faithful Jesus told his followers that those who are in Judea at that time should flee, and those who are not should not enter the city (Matthew 24:16; Luke 21:21) During the brief period when the Roman siege on Jerusalem was lifted, all the Christians fled the city and settled in the city of Pella (17 miles south of the Lake of Gallee)
Fate of the Faithful Jesus prophetic message to leave Judea was no secret, however only His faithful followers heeded his message of warning While the faithful did not know the exact date of the event, they recognized the signs!
Answer to the What question Much like the situation just prior to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the age will be preceded by signs that the faithful will heed and understand In Matthew 24:4-14; and Luke 21:8-19; 25-28, Jesus outlines the signs that will herald his return and the end of the age
Signs of the Times
Political, Social, and Natural Signs Wars and rumors of wars (Mt. 24:6; Lk. 21:9) Nation against nation, kingdom against kingdom (Mt. 24:7; Lk. 21:10) Famines, pestilences, and earthquakes (Mt. 24:7; Lk. 21:11, 25b)

Signs in the Heavens and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Lk. 21:11) Signs in the sun, moon, and stars (Mt. 24:29; Lk. 21:25a)
Signs in the Heavens Revelation 6:12-13 The Sixth Seal I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.
Signs in the Heavens Revelation 6:12-13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.
The sun became black The dark day of May 19 th, 1780
The moon became as blood The day after the dark day, the moon appeared to be blood-red
The stars of heaven fell The meteoric shower of November 12-13, 1833
What s next? 1. World-wide preaching of the Gospel (Mt. 24:14) 2.The Return of Jesus in glory 3.The end of this age Matthew 24:30-31; Luke 21:27-29

Jesus Return Public and visible, not a secret (Mt. 24:27) Sudden for those who do not heed the signs (Mt. 24:32-44; Lk. 21:34-36) Call to faithfulness (Mt. 24:45-51)
Jesus assures us, Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. (Mt. 24:35)
Jesus Fulfilled Prophecies Jesus accurately predicted the time for the A.D. 70 fall of Jerusalem His faithful followers who heeded his warnings escaped the destruction Jesus accurately predicted some of circumstances and events that will precede his return and the end of the age His faithful followers who heed his warnings will escape ultimate destruction
