4 OBJECTIVES After you have completed this module, you will be able to: Describe and identify the various ranks within the CFD by their insignia according to forage cap badges, lapel pins, tunic sleeves, epaulets, and operational helmets for the following: Fire Chief Deputy Chief Assistant Deputy Chief Battalion Chief District Chief Captain Lieutenant Firefighter Describe and identify any other officers not listed above by their insignia according to forage cap badges, lapel pins, tunic sleeves, epaulets, and operational helmets. INTRODUCTION This module provides a compilation of insignia worn by uniformed members of the Calgary Fire Department (CFD). Forage cap badges, lapel pins, tunic sleeves, epaulet stripes, and forage cap adornments are the means by which rank differentiation is made. On the fire ground, fire helmet colour is used to distinguish chief officers, company officers, firefighters, and support staff. February
5 DESCRIPTION OF RANK FIRE SUPPRESSION The Fire Service uses the term Chief Officer to describe individuals who are in a Chief role. These Chief Officers are responsible for overseeing management functions as well as supervising fire operations. In the Calgary Fire Department, the Chief Officers are: Fire Chief (1) oversees the entire Calgary Fire Department (CFD) Deputy Chief (8) oversee the eight divisions of the CFD o Operations o Training & Technical Teams o Community Standards o Planning and Compliance o Logistics and Infrastructure o Administration o Employee Development & Technology o Emergency Management Agency Assistant Deputy Chief (8) each division also has an Assistant Deputy Chief Battalion Chief (4) firefighters work on a platoon system. There are four platoons (A, B, C, & D) and each platoon is supervised by a Battalion Chief District Chief (20) the city is divided into 5 districts (East, West, North, South, & Central). Each district on each platoon is supervised by a District Chief, therefore there are 5 District Chiefs on at any given time (one in each district) Company Officers are in charge of each crew. Company Officers include: Fire Captain each Fire Engine (pumper truck) is supervised by a Fire Captain on each platoon. As there is an Engine in each fire hall, the Captain is in charge of the Fire Hall as well. Fire Lieutenant every other Fire Apparatus is supervised by a Lieutenant. These include: Aerial trucks, Rescue trucks, Hazmat trucks, etc. Every hall has an Engine, but only select halls have other apparatus, such as these. Firefighters are the main work force of the fire department. They include: Senior Firefighter one on each Fire Engine (pumper truck) Firefighter drive the trucks and ride in the back Probationary Firefighter placed on Fire Engines as needed, ride in the back with the Senior Firefighter February
6 SUPPORT STAFF The Fire Department also relies on numerous Support Staff to fill various roles. Each uniformed support staff member was once a Firefighter who has moved into a different role with our Department. The Fire Marshall oversees the entire Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB). Each Support Section is also run by a Coordinator. These include: Hazardous Material Coordinator Emergency Management Coordinator Recruitment Coordinator Fire Inspections Coordinator Wellness & Fitness Coordinator Health and Safety Coordinator Community Safety Coordinator Many Support Sections also have Staff Support Officers. These include: Hazardous Material Officers Emergency Management Officers Recruitment Officers Wellness & Fitness Officers Health and Safety Officers Community Safety Officers Fire Inspector II Technical Services Officers Public Information Officers Shift Investigator Training Officers Arson Investigator Fire Inspector I The Fire Department also employs many other non-uniformed support staff in numerous roles. These staff members do not wear uniforms and are therefore not included in this manual. February
7 UNIFORMS WORK UNIFORM While at the Fire Station or in the office, rank can be distinguished by the epaulet stripes worn on the shoulders of the uniform shirt. Each member also has their name and rank embroidered onto the chest of their uniform shirt. ON AN EMERGENCY SCENE All members wear full Fire Gear at the scene of an emergency. The colour of the fire helmet is the only way to determine what rank each member is. Fire Suppression members wear White, Red, or Yellow helmets. Support Staff wear White, Blue, or Red helmets. DRESS UNIFORM During ceremonies or other special events, each member wears the #1 Dress Uniform. This uniform includes a navy blue tunic jacket with shoulder flashes, dress pants, dress shoes, white shirt with shoulder flashes, a tie, and a forage cap. The rank of a member can be distinguished by the forage cap and its badge, the lapel pins on the tunic and the stripes on the sleeves of the tunic. February
