1 DEVELOPMENT OF COAL GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY FOR HIGHLY EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF FUELS AND ELECTRICITY The project, "Development of coal gasification technology for high production of fuels and electricity" funded by the National Center for Research and Development within the strategic program of research and development: "Advanced energy generation technologies".

2 General informations The Project is one of four research tasks funded by the National Centre for Research and Development in the framework of the Strategic Programme for Research and Development entitled "Advanced technologies for energy generation." The Project will be carried out in the years by the consortium led by the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. The consortium also includes: Scientific partners: Central Mining Institute, Institute For Chemical Processing of Coal, Silesian University Of Technology, Industrial partners: Katowicki Holding Węglowy S.A., KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., Tauron Polska Energia S.A., Tauron Wytwarzanie S.A., Południowy Koncern Węglowy S.A., Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. The total budget of the Project includes funding from NCBR (80 million PLN) and industrial partners own contribution, amounting to approximately 9.8 million PLN.

3 The objectives of the project In accordance with the provisions set out in the The NCBR Competition Announcement, the primary goal of the Project (the Research Task No. 3) is to develop the optimal configuration, process guidelines and design of coal gasification systems constituting the basis for the construction of national demonstration projects, particularly: development and validation of a pilot-scale pressure coal gasification process, development and testing of a pilot-scale process of underground hard coal gasification, optimization and testing of pilot-scale processes for the purification and conversion of gas in conjunction with a CO 2 removal system. The research tasks of the Project were divided into eight research topics. Each of the Research Topics is divided into Parts, which are carried out by different research partners in accordance with their power

4 Activities and achievements related to the project (1/3) a model of "Card of Technology for coal suitability for the gasification process". It was verified by laboratory tests of selected parameters, the characterization of preferred geological, geomechanical and mining parameters, which are associated with the UCG process and its impact on the environment, works completed enabling computer simulations of gasification processes taking place in a georeactor and their impact on the surrounding rocks; in situ laboratory examination results were used to assess coal resources, computer simulations which take into consideration the reliable mapping of the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes. For the first time in Poland verifying tests of the mechanical properties of the rock mass caused by the underground gasification process under varying thermal conditions were conducted. Moreover, in order to explain and prevent the undesired course of the underground coal gasification, the knowledge on underground fires in coal seams was adapted, the card pattern known as "The Passport Card of Coal Seam" which is the starting point for parameterization data necessary for the identification of domestic coal seams and deposits for the underground gasification process, evaluation of coal resources in respect of the development strategy of coal mining in Poland, environmental considerations and economic factors, determination of kinetic reaction parameters which were obtained by implementing gasification reagents such as, water vapor, carbon dioxide and their mixtures at high pressure conditions,

5 Activities and achievements related to the project (2/3) determination of the pressure and temperature effect on the yield and composition of gasification products. Furthermore, the coal conversion rate was also defined, evaluation of the reactivity of selected coals with regard to water vapor, evaluation of the suitability of selected coals for the gasification process. Guidelines for the proper selection of technological parameters of the process were also established. a register and an analysis of commercial and prospective technologies for coal gasification processes and other operations which are related to them, addressing the needs of Polish power and chemical sector, performance of several ex-situ underground coal gasification experiments simulating the process of the underground coal gasification under real conditions and enabling the assessment of the influence of process parameters and gasification agents on products quality and quantity, determination of location and development of the concept of the underground and surface installations and next, development of detailed engineering designs, obtaining of the required decisions, permits and approvals from mining and administrative authorities related to the construction of the above mentioned installations, selection through a tendering process installation contractors, and construction of the installations surface infrastructure has been already completed; construction of the underground part is expected to be finished in November 2013,

6 Activities and achievements related to the project (3/3) preparation of pilot-scale gasification technology tests along with a balance preparation for the circulating fluidised bed coal gasification reactor using CO 2 in the process, results of laboratory and large-scale tests of the mercury removal process by way of lowtemperature pyrolysis including determination of basic process parameters for the sake of development of a demonstration-scale technology concept, development of a composition of amine solutions to be used for CO 2 removal, development of a composition as well as methods of the monolithic adsorbent production for the sake of H 2 S and NH 3 removal from the gas obtained from coal gasification, thermodynamic and kinetic model of the CFB coal gasification reactor, preparation of a technological diagram of the chemicals production system integrated with coal gasification by means of a CFB reactor with CO 2 used as the reacting substance. selection of technological datasheets for processes of the goal gasification gas purification and treatment, based on the results obtained in the course of the pilot-scale tests of surface-based coal gasification as well as other study works, a technological design of a surface-based demonstration system for coal gasification using an additional CO 2 flux as the gasifying agent will be developed along with a feasibility study for the said demonstration system, a flow diagram of an IGCC cogeneration plant with CO2 capture and recirculation has been developed, which assumes the oxy-combustion of syngas in a gas turbine, and oxycombustion of the remaining char from gasification process in a steam boiler.
