1 UniDirect Diploma Choosing Your Major or Double Major At UniDirect, we look forward to welcoming you into our Diploma program. Can you please take a little time to read this document carefully and then send us a short about your choice of major. You need to know what you are going to major in before you arrive for orientation. Your major is your area of specialisation in your Bachelor of Commerce degree. For example, you might wish to have a single major in Economics or Information Technology or or Accounting. Or you might have a double major in Accounting and Finance or Asian Studies and Finance or and Human Resource You will do the same number of units per semester whether you study a single major or a double major. The fees are the same for a single or a double major. We need you to your choice of major to UniDirect before you come to orientation so that we can enrol you correctly. Your choice of major or double major will depend on your stream (ie Curtin Stream or UWA Stream). Please use the list on page 3 and 4 to choose your major/double major. 5 If you are in the UWA Stream, and would like some further information on the majors available If you are in the Curtin Stream, and would like some further information on the majors available Some suggestions to help you Double majors A double major is where you are an expert in two fields. For example, you might have a double major in your Commerce degree of Banking and Finance or in Marketing and Public Relations. So that we can enrol you in the correct units, it is important that you know your major when you come to the Diploma Orientation. This is because many units have pre-requisites. This means, for example, that you cannot study Accounting (Managerial) 201 until you have passed Accounting 100. That is, Accounting 100 is a pre-requisite unit for Accounting (Managerial) 201. Please take the time to choose your major. How to choose your major To get a better idea of you major, you might wish to: Talk to family and friends Talk to people who work in fields which interest you Look at websites which provide career information Speak to a counsellor. Another approach is to consider your personality. Ask questions like: Do you like numbers or words? Do you enjoy dealing with people or with things? Are you more creative than logical? Would you enjoy working as part of a team or as an individual? Do you like travel? Do you enjoy managing people? Online help You can look at websites which explain careers. Getaccess Get Access is a Western Australian website which describes in detail what different professions (such as accountants, economists and financial analysts) are all about and what sort of salary range each is likely to earn.
