1 30. Indonesian Language (Bahasa Indonesia) for Primary School (SD)/ Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI)/Islamic Primary School A. Background Language has a central role in the development of intellectual, social, and emotional of students and provides a highly significant support in learning all subject matters. Learning language is expected to help students to know themselves, their culture, and culture of others, to express their ideas and feelings, to participate in the community utilizing the language, and to discover and use analytical and imaginative abilities existing in their own. Learning Bahasa Indonesia is directed toward the improvement of students ability to properly and correctly communicate in Bahasa Indonesia, both in oral and writing, and to enhance appreciation to the letters works of Indonesian people. Standards of competency of learning Bahasa Indonesia are qualified minimum competencies of students which describe their mastery level of knowledge and skills of the language as well as their positive attitude toward Indonesian language and letters. These standards of competency are basis for the students to understand and respond to the local, regional, national, and global situation. Acquiring these standards of competency in Bahasa Indonesia is expected: 1. Students will be able to develop their potentials in accordance with their abilities, needs, and interests, and able to enhance appreciation to the letters works and intellectual results of their own nation; Curriculum, Bahasa Indonesia, PS/MI 1

2 2. Teachers will be able to focus on developing the students language competencies by making available of and facilitating with activities and learning resources using the language; 3. Teachers will be having more self dependence and freedom to determine learning materials in linguistics and letters in accordance with school environment and their students ability; 4. Parents and community will be more actively involved in implementing linguistics and letters programs at school; 5. School will be able to formulate educational programs on linguistics and letters in accordance with students condition and available learning resources; 6. District/locality will be able to determine materials and learning resources in linguistics and letters in accordance with the local conditions and characteristics with remain attending to national interests. B. Objective The subject matter of Bahasa Indonesia aims at providing the following abilities to the students: 1. To effectively and efficiently communicate in oral and writing in accordance with the existing ethics 2. To appreciate and be proud of using Bahasa Indonesia as united and national language 3. To understand Bahasa Indonesia and use it properly and creatively for various purposes 4. To use Bahasa Indonesia to improve intellectual capacity and emotional and social maturity 5. To enjoy and utilize letters works in order to expand horizon, to refine behavior and natural ability, and to improve knowledge and language ability Curriculum, Bahasa Indonesia, PS/MI 2

3 6. To appreciate and be proud of Indonesian letters works as treasure of culture and intellect of Indonesian people C. Coverage The subject matter Bahasa Indonesia covers components of language and letters abilities with the following aspects: The students, after completing their education at Primary School or Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic Primary School), have read at least 9 books of letters and non-letters. D. and Year I, 1 st Semester 1. Understanding the language sound, command, and story in oral Distinguishing various language sounds Performing an activity according to command or simple instructions Mentioning figures (prominent figures) in a story Curriculum, Bahasa Indonesia, PS/MI 3

4 2. Expressing ideas, feelings, and information in spoken discourses by means of introduction and greetings, introduction of objects and functions of human body parts, and declamation 3. Understanding short text through reading aloud 4.
