1 Teacher s Guide Listen to Literature Focus Skills Grammar Prepositions (Location and Direction Words) Listening and Speaking Listen to Literature Juan Bobo Goes Up and Down the Hill retold by Marisa Montes CD 3 Track 21 ABOUT THE FOLK TALE Juan Bobo goes up the hill to get Grandma s three-legged pot. Then silly Juan wants to race the pot back down the hill! When the pot won t move, Juan kicks it. The big pot rolls down the hill and Juan thinks the pot has won the race! 2 Listen to Literature Build Background and Vocabulary Key Concept Some people do silly things that make you laugh. Key Words carry climb down drag kick lazy race silly tired up Materials Juan Bobo Goes Up and Down the Hill map of the Americas (optional) 1 Teach ACTIONS Use pantomime and gestures to show the meanings of the Key Words as you say: I climb up the hill. I go down the hill. I carry a box. Then I drag it behind me. I kick the ball. I will race (student) to the door. Have the student walk fast and win the race while you trail behind. Have students try each movement and repeat the Key Word. Then invite the class to guess action verbs as students pantomime them. ADJECTIVES Explain different feelings: When you feel lazy (slouch in chair), you don t want to do anything. Ask: When do people feel lazy? After you run, you might feel tired (yawn). What else makes people tired? When you act silly, you do things that don t make sense. Try to write with the eraser end of a pencil and ask: Is this silly? 3 2 1 Check for Understanding Use TPR techniques to make sure students have learned the Key Words. For example: Have students pretend to carry a box or kick a ball. Tell students: Show me how you feel when you are tired. Show me how you act when you are silly. Preview the Story Introduce the Folk Tale CHARACTERS Have students open their books to pages 2 3. Read the title: Juan Bobo Goes Up and Down the Hill. Then point to and name the characters on the bookmark. Say: Juan Bobo is a character in many stories in Puerto Rico (show on map). He is silly and makes people laugh. PREDICTION Point to the pot on page 3 as you read the sentences on the bookmark. Invite students to answer the question. 4 2 Listen to Literature Preview Script Conduct a Picture Walk Use this script to help students access the overall idea of the story. O nce there was a very silly boy. Everyone called him Juan Bobo. One day, Juan Bobo s mother wanted to make soup. She had too many vegetables. They did not fit in her pot. Juan, Mama called, go up the hill to your grandma s house. Borrow her big pot. It s the one with three legs. 4 Pages 4 5 This is Juan Bobo (point). This is his mother (point). What is Juan doing? 5 6 Pages 6 7 Mama wants Juan to get Grandma s big pot. Grandma lives at the top of the hill (trace path). 7 The Black Pot In Grandmother s house, way up on the hill, In one of the cupboards, on one of the shelves, There s a shiny black pot with three little legs. That s where it should be. Please bring it to me! Juan groaned. He did not want to get the pot. He wanted to take a nap under the banana tree. But he climbed up the hill to his grandmother s house. 8 9 Pages 8 9 Mama sings this song. She tells where the pot (point) is in Grandma s house. 10 Pages Juan really doesn t want to go! He wants to take a nap (yawn, close eyes). But he climbs up the hill. 11 Hi, Grandma, he said. Mama needs your big pot. Which pot? Grandma asked. She was standing in front of a cupboard. Juan looked inside the cupboard. There were many dishes and pots on the shelves. Then he saw the black pot. It s the one with three legs, he said. There s the Pot! Juan stood next to the cupboard, in front of the red chair. Juan saw the big, black pot, and he shouted, It s right there! It s there below the dishes, there between the cups, There above a big bowl full of coconuts Pages Juan gets to Grandma s house. He sees the pot (point) on a shelf in her cupboard (trace shape) Pages This is another song. It is about the pot in the cupboard (point). Hampton-Brown page 4 of 7 Juan Bobo Goes Up and Down the Hill
5 Juan Bobo took the pot off the shelf and carried it out the door. It s heavy! he said. Juan, said his grandmother, just take it to your mama. Let s race down the hill to my house! Juan Bobo said to the pot. I bet you can run fast with three legs. He stood next to the pot and yelled, One, two, three GO! Juan Bobo raced down the hill. As he ran, he sang Pages Look at Juan. It s hard to carry the pot. He thinks the pot should walk (point to pot s legs) by itself! Pages Juan wants to race the pot! (Crouch for race.) Can a pot run? The Race Jump over rocks, Run down the hill, And then go through the gate. Juan Bobo raced into the house. He fell on the floor. He was so tired! Juan, Mama said, where is the big pot? Isn t it here yet? Juan cried. What do you mean? Mama said. Run up the steps, Across the yard Oh, hurry, please don t wait! Pages Juan races down the hill. He sings this song Pages Juan gets home, but where is the pot? He has to go back up the hill to get it! The pot was still on the path. You lazy old thing! Juan Bobo said. You have three good legs, but you just sit there! You could race me if you tried. Juan Bobo was mad. He kicked the pot hard. BONG! It began to roll down the hill. PING, PANG! PING, Pages Juan finds the pot. He is angry (mimic expression). He kicks it (pantomime) and it rolls down the hill! PANG! Wait, you silly old pot! Juan Bobo yelled. I haven t counted to three yet! He ran after the pot. The pot didn t stop. It rolled down the hill, over the rocks, and through the gate. It bounced up the steps and across the yard. Then it went right into the kitchen. Juan ran as fast as he could, but the pot won the race! Pages The pot goes all the way into the house (trace path). Guess what? Juan thinks the pot won the race! Or read the folk tale aloud and pause to play the songs on these tracks: Pages 8 9 Track 22 The Black Pot Pages Track 25 There s the Pot! Pages Track 28 The Race As students listen, use Sheltering Strategies like these to help make the language in the story comprehensible. Sheltering Strategies Facial expression Gestures Express Juan Bobo s moods: lazy, frustrated, baffled, etc. Use gestures to demonstrate prepositions such as in, on, under, next to, etc. Real objects Display a pot (page 7). Definition Sound effects Explain that when you borrow something, you use it and then give it back (page 7). Groan for groaned (page 11). Hit the pot or another metal object with a ruler to convey the sounds bong, ping, and pang (page 29). Pantomime Act as if your back hurts (page 18). Restatement After reading I bet you can run fast with three legs (page 20), say: I m sure you can run fast with three legs. 7 2 Listen and Try Out Language Conduct an interactive reading of the folk tale. Pause after you read text containing prepositions and involve students in using the focus language structures. For example: Page 12: Say the Rest of It Point to Grandma in the picture as you read She was standing in front of a cupboard. Ask: Where was Grandma? Repeat She was standing and pause for students to supply in front of a cupboard. Hi, Grandma, he said. Mama needs your big pot. Which pot? Grandma asked. She was standing in front of a cupboard. Page 31: Say It All Together Use gestures to show actions as you read It rolled down the hill, over the rocks, and through the gate. Say: Where did the pot roll? Let s say it together. Encourage students to mimic your gestures as you repeat the sentence together. The pot didn t stop. It rolled down the hill, over the rocks, and through the gate.
