1 Instructor: Dr. Xiangqun Zeng Office: SEB 231 (Research Lab SEB 214/216) Fall 2009 Syllabus Analytical Chemistry (Chemistry 325) Lecture: T Th 1:00-2:47 pm, 388 SEB Laboratory: T Th 3:00-6:30 pm, 290 SEB Office Phone: ; Research Lab: ; zeng@oakland.edu ; web: Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday: 10:00 am to 11:00 am or by appointment. Teaching Assistant: Talia Sebastian ; tsebasti@oakland.edu. Course Objective: Classic and modern methods of chemical quantitative analysis. In this course, you will learn the basic quantitative analysis techniques and you are also expected to acquire the ability to apply the learned knowledge and lab skills and be able to modify them to solve the real world analytical problems. You will learn how to use statistics to evaluate the errors in your experimental data. An active participation in the lecture, lab and recitation is strongly encouraged. You have to go actively through learning processes and the instructor will be helping and guiding you. Analytical Chemistry tends to be a hard course even though you are an A student in general chemistry. You need to have enough understanding about general chemistry materials and know basic mathematics and physics in order to succeed in this class. Note: You cannot pass this class by memorization. Reading the textbook and do the assignments are very important and you must work very hard in this course. Course prerequisite: A grade of C or better in CHM 148 or CHM 158 or CHM 168 or its equivalent is required for taking this course. Textbook: Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry, by Skoog, West, Holler and Crouch, 8 th Edition, Brooks/cole, Thomson Learning Inc., ISBN-13: ; ISBN-10: Required items: Calculator with logarithms, exponential and scientific notation; a pair of safety goggles, which completely protects the eyes from splashes from all directions. A standard-size laboratory notebook, preferably one of the National Blank Book Co. products numbered , , or Chem. 325 laboratory manual (you can purchase it from bookstore). Homework: Problems from the textbook and additional problem sets will be distributed or announced weekly. Experience shows that your grade in the course is proportional to the effort you make in doing the assignments!!. The homework is not graded. However, quizzes will be given based on the homework. The quizzes will be 20% toward your final lecture grade. 1
2 Exams: There will be two in class midterm lecture exams covering materials mainly from lecture and small portion from the labs. Each is 250 points total and 25% each towards final lecture grade. Final exam is 300 points total and 30% towards final lecture grade. Four quizzes, each is 50 points, total 200 points will be 20% towards final lecture grade. There will be bonus questions in each exam. All midterm exams and quizzes are not cumulative which means that each exam and quiz will cover materials presented in lecture prior to the test. The final exam will be cumulative with 70% of the materials that have not been tested and 30% materials that cover those chapters that have been tested. Generally there is no make-up exam. In case of serious illness or an emergency, notify your instructor with the written proof from your doctor to schedule a make-up. Quizzes: Four quizzes will be given base on the following topics. Each quiz is about mins and worth 50 points. The date of each quiz will be announced one week earlier. Quiz 1: statistics Quiz 2: acid-base titration Quiz 3: redox titration and potentiometry Quiz 4: spectrophotometry Grade: The course grade will base on both lecture and lab grade. The lecture will be 60% toward final course grade. Lab will be 40% toward final course grade. The following is a detailed explanation for lab grade. Lab Grade: At beginning of each laboratory experiment, you will obtain an unknown sample to analyze. Your lab grade will base on how accurately and precisely your determination approaches the correct answer. A grading curve or equation for each lab will be used based on the relative deviation (or relative error) of your result from the accepted value. The basic procedures of each lab are explained in the lab manual. Just for doing the lab, you can receive maximum 30 out of only if you complete the experiments with good techniques, handing the results, having good lab notebook write-ups, and clean bench. You are required to complete all eleven experiments. But you are allowed to drop one lowest lab grade and will be graded on the best ten grades. Lab notebook write up will be 200 points. So the maximum lab grade is 1000 points. Each lab result is due on the next Thursday immediately following the completion of your experiment. Report that is turned in late will lose 10 points for each week the report is late unless approved by instructor. For each lab, the students who performed the most accurate chemical analysis will receive 5 points of bonus points. Each student will be responsible to clean his/her own bench area. The common areas such as hood, reagent bench, sink and balance will be assigned to a group of students. Each group of students is responsible for the cleanness and condition of those assigned common areas. If you fail to clean your bench or assigned common areas, you will receive a warning from the TA and/or instructor. After one warning, 5 points deduction will be applied to your lab grade each time you failed to clean the space you are responsible for. You are encouraged to clean the areas, which are not assigned to you. Altruism is a good virtue. 2
