1 May 20 Green Book Editorial New Market The word on the street is that things are moving along nicely, with showroom traffic and interest from buyers continuing as the season starts in earnest. Weather patterns so far this year have been different when compared to the same period last year, especially over the first two months. Higher mean temperatures this year and lower rainfall look like they have played some part in retail buying patterns. January registrations saw an overall increase year-on-year of 14.2 followed by 24.8 in February and a positive of 18.9 over the combined two months. There is talk on the streets about pre-plate change purchases. Last year many were delayed due the inclement nature of the climate, but this year the good start resulted in some buyers taking early delivery rather than waiting for the new plate. If this is the case then it could go some way to explaining the sudden shift in good fortunes and only a minor 1.4 growth for March. As the year moves on some patterns usually start to appear and although it is still relatively early there are a couple of things worth noting. The Supersport category is having a difficult time at the moment with 434 units less this March when compared to 20. This is a quite sizable and reduces the type to 12.1 of the market share down from.2 last year. This pattern is similar in the three months of the current year and apart from Touring there is still some signs of improvement in all other areas. Perhaps though this comes as little surprise if we look at the new model introductions that have been causing interest in the riding and press community are virtually all in these bands. And while on the subject of new or significantly upd models, there is talk around the retailers that demand for some of these is exceeding the amount produced. Reports are suggesting that in some cases the wait is currently several months, which leads nicely onto the highest models in the styles which contain a couple of the most widely talked about models as front runners. There are always differences in what individual dealers sell so reports that drill down to individual models that prove more elusive than others have to be examined in a broader sense. Even though Supersports are not faring (excuse the pun) well in the new market, the difficulty in finding quality low mileage examples of most brands is something mentioned by many dealers. The trade is increasingly feeding back that with a bit of trawling on the internet with a laptop switched on while sat in front of the TV at night is finding some bargains from private individuals which in many cases have lower price tags than is what is available in the trade. There have been some movements in this month s edition as and where necessary, but not swathing uplifts given in the first few months of the year as we move into more stable price times. Auction Around the halls the pattern is similar to the last couple of months with West Coast continuing the rise in quality and number of entries in small but positive steps. In the period between Black Horse disposals BCA had a smaller sale than the month before but again other finance house and manufacturer entries saw the quality and numbers remain level. Bawtry Auction have rebranded as Motor Auction Group and held their first sale in new, clean and well laid out premises, and started the new era off in good style. 0 entries and lots of buyers. All three sales finished with similar numbers of around three quarters selling and very close to CAP figures. End Notes It s bad enough rattling over the roads in a reasonably stable four wheeled box these days, but take to two wheels and it is becoming downright dangerous in some places. There have been several widely publicised cases recently of cyclist deaths, attributed to the poor state of roads in the UK, so it comes as good news to all riders that the government recently announced it s making available the first of five batches of 50 million of funding to fix 943,000 potholes on the nation s roads over the next 12 months. The Pothole Action Fund, was announced in last month s budget. MV Agusta has had several owners in the last 20 years since Claudio Castiglioni revived the iconic Italian brand. But yet again there are storm clouds gathering over Varese. There has been some stunning growth in the manufacturer s turnover, with 20 numbers up 30 to 100M Euro. Over the last few years there has been a number of new models developed to get these larger sales figures, but of course this larger range has to be paid for by investment in new models and competitive pricing.
