A contractors experience with polymer modified bitumen NorBit Seminar 19.oktober 2010 Jon Borge Finset Nynas AS
Jon Borge Finset Chemical Engineer from Høgskolen i Oslo Worked with KOLO VEIDEKKE Central laboratory Bitumen applications Bitumen emulsion Foamed bitumen Polymer modified bitumen Nynas, Head of Technical Support, since aug 2010
History PMB in Kolo Veidekke Research and development Analysis of bitumen PMB marked in Norway Kolo Veidekke PMB plants PMB Specifications and specifications in tenders, seen from a contractors view Kolo Veidekkes experience with PMB in asphalt
History 1995 KVD started PMB production at Banak Lufthavn tons produced on a production unit developed by KVD , Construction at OSLO Lufthavn Gardermoen, OSL tons PG produced in high shear production unit ca tons PMB produced at low shear manually controlled plant PG for maintenance at OSL. PMB 60 for road construction 2007 KVD invested in a new mobile PMB automatic plant, placed in Moss. PG for airports PMB 60 and PMB 80 for road construction 2008 KVD invested in a second PMB automatic plant, placed in Stjørdal. Totally KVD produced ca tons PMB Further investments is done at Moss, new storage tanks 2009 A third automatic plant is placed in Lakselv, a fourth manually plant is placed at Bardufoss. KVD produced ca tons of PMB at four plants in 2009
Research and development KOLO VEIDEKKE uses a lot of resources to develop new products and meet the demands in the market. Combined equipment for preparation of laboratory samples Emulsions Polymer modified binders Foam bitumen 5

PMB Specification NPRA, HB 018, Roadconstruction General tenders Special specifications E2 CEN standard NS-EN 14023, Valid from Factory Production Control Declaration of conformity Type test rapport 15
HB 018, PMB specifications
Tender Specification Polymer modified bitumen PMB shall contain polymer of thermoplastic elastomers classified in accordance to NS-EN Softening point higher than 65 C. document deformation stability for the actual asphalt with PMB Fraass breaking point lower than -15 C. Type testing in accordance to NS-EN 14023, this documentation shall not be older than one year. PMB s shall be sufficient storage stabile. 17
Documentation of deformation stability Requirements from SVV: Document better deformation stability Wheel Track for lab produced asphalt as documentation Dynamic creep on coring samples from road 18

Contractors view on the specifications Contractors need predictability: Over the past 4 years, the main product NPRA changed from PMB 60 through PMB 65 to PMB 80 without any prior discussion with contractors. It may seem that those who prepare the tenders have little knowledge of PMB and just pick the option with the highest modification degree. Unnecessary demands for documentation and tests. Storage stability for every 100 tons -> Loss in softening point Softening point -> Depends on when sample is taken. Fraass breaking point -> Impossible to prepare good samples
PMB in Asphalt Higher production temperature Higher focus on starts and stops Start compaction immediately Remove excess asphalt when lifting the paver Paving by hand with PMB asphalt is difficult It is difficult to get nice finishing by hand asphalt around manholes and drains
Summary KOLO VEIDEKKE has long experience with PMB KOLO VEIDEKKE has used a lot of resources to meet the demands in the market. CEN standard NS-EN is valid from January Factory Production Control (FPC) All products need to be approved (CE-marked??) All producers need predictability for the next season. 22
