2 SCHEME OF WORK KS.4. D&T DEPT. TEXTILES 1 Introduction KS3 learning, what has been covered Experience of textiles /high street knowledge and general knowledge Students will have an understanding of health and safety issues relating to a practical subject with a detailed look at fibres, fabrics, finishing of seams, ethical/sustainable textiles 8/9/09 2/10/09: 11 Lessons/3.5 weeks 1 Welcome to the classroom. handed out. Go through levels and expectations in technology Recap previous skills taught through Q+A How does it differ to KS3? i.e. more technical, specific subject knowledge Books out don t loose, date everything, can decorate covers if you wish Definitions Fibre, Yarn, Fabric (samples can be given out) What is textile technology? Textiles brainstorm automotives, shipping, medical, clothing, forces etc Textiles in the home bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, upholstery, aesthetics Textiles in the world (multicultural video) 1 Health and safety 10 rules to be copied down Practice tacking, straight stitch and how to set the machine up for zigzag (satin stitch) Sewing machine recap threading is a must on both types of machines 2 What is a seam? The finishing of a fabric edge by folding it under Why have seams? - neatening of raw edges, straightening, durability Complete samples flat, French and double fell/over locking Copy up method into pink books and write an evaluation 1 Fibres/fabrics knitting/weaving/non woven Natural v s man made Blends e.g. polyester/cotton 2 Smart Textiles Microfibres/laminated/microencapsulated/ nano technologies Student research task in pairs and presentations back to the group 4 Primark ethical/sustainability textiles - Primark on the rack video - Sponsorship chain task/maras story - Fibre to fabric chain using the photos - Map to explore where fibres are grown - Fair trade; Create a questionnaire to find out peoples perceptions - Problems with carrier bags/design ideas for new bags Poster/Leaflet explaining what textile covers Write up the method of the seams/evaluate seams Evaluation of the introduction section Fair trade questionnaire Video Sewing machines Sample fabric Overlocker Fabric samples Computer room DVD Oxfam booklet Computer room

TEXTILES 2 Yr9 bottlecoats/yr8 techniques Machine practice Skill building Project 1 (Travel Bag) Students will have an understanding of health and safety issues relating to a practical subject with a detailed look at technical terms and production lines 5/10/09 6/11/09: 12 Lessons/4 weeks 1 Brief and introduction we re skill building its not all about pretty bags Pattern pattern pieces 1 Layout be economical, straight grain on gingham Cut fabric - we have enough for everyone 1 Pockets Mark on spacing Hem pocket 2 Appliqué: bondaweb and satin stitch Can adapt the shapes as long as they re not too big, and bondaweb them quite close to the top so that they don t get caught in the base 1 Sew to make a cylinder right sides together Pattern Fabric Bondaweb 1 Base as bottle coat 1 Lining sew rectangle to make a cylinder and add base. Insert right sides together 2 Bias binding top Bias Binding 1 Inserting cord Cord 1 Production plan What is a straight grain? Why do we need to be economical? TEXTILES 3 Skill building Project 2 (Textile Techniques/Cushion) Yr8 Textile techniques, basic construction methods and sewing machine practice Students will have an understanding of health and safety issues relating to a practical subject with a detailed look at textile techniques 6/11/09 18/12/09: 18 Lessons/6 weeks 2 Students will practice a technique and produce 9 square samples which will be sewn together into a cushion using the theme of Christmas as inspiration: Demo Play Write method in books 2 Tone Tie Dye Appliqué Tie dye 1 Reverse Applique Fabric 1 Bondaweb Bondaweb 2 Silk Screen Printing Screen, paints etc 1 Needle Punching Machine Needle punching 1 Transfer Paper Transfer Paper 1 Pastels/Crayons/Transfer Paints Paints. Crayons. 1 Embroidery Threads 1 Quilting Wadding 1 Couching Threads 1 Sew the chosen 9 squares together 2 Sew together to make an envelope style cushion Fabric templates 3 Introduce Fashion forecasting boards Write up Fashion forecaster job description Discuss brief, how to find out information, presentation, why it needs presenting and how it helps Collect images to make their boards A3 will be provided anything bigger is their responsibility Use the computers and websites given to find actual trends Design 9 squares to represent Christmas Buy a cushion CHRISTMAS HWK RESEARCH BOARDS Examples

TEXTILES 4 Skill Building Project 3 (Garment Construction/Fashion Design) Students will have an understanding of health and safety issues relating to a practical subject with a detailed look at construction techniques, QC, Product analysis and CAD 4/1/10 26/3/10: 33 Lessons/11 weeks 1 Copy out job description Fashion designer job description and designs in pink books You are now a fashion designer. You have discussed with the textile designers the forthcoming seasons trends and predictions, and discussed with buyers which fabrics are available. As a designer you need to design a series of skirts - their final product must tie in with their trend work 1 Measuring stress how shop sizes differ to those in manufacturing, measure themselves 1 Explain a pattern envelope front and back/explain pattern pieces and symbols Envelopes Students to answer questions 2 Product Analysis/disassembly Skirts 2 Fabric choice/finishes/fabric testing Science block 4 Design ideas 1 Design Criteria/Client profile 2 Introduce pattern blocks - Trace the pattern pieces (if ours) onto newsprint paper and copy the information - Prototype if necessary/toile 2 Stress lay plan, nap and being economical again cut fabric 1 Tailors tack lesson 2 Darts 2 Zips explain fastenings and components 4 Hems 3 Waistband 3 CAD embroider logo Embroidery machine 1 Labelling 1 Quality control/qa/qc peer assessment\evaluation\the critique feedback from teachers
