4 Gaspar El Rey Gaspar was Emperor of the Orient and ruled all oriental lands (King of India). His clothes were made in gold. King Gaspars gift was frankincense, an exceedingly strong scent used in the sacred incense for temple service. It is harvested from a tree in Arabia. Frankincense was a priceless gift for kings and symbolized prayer. It was burned in temples to honor God. Gaspar is said to have also brought many other fine gifts for the Christ Child. It is said he also travelled the farthest.

6 Baltazar Baltazar was a Nubian King and ruler of Ethiopia. Baltazar was dressed in elaborate robes. His gift was myrrh, a precious and aromatic resin that comes from the bark of a thorny African tree and symbolizes suffering. Myrrh was a very precious product in the Middle East. It was one of the ingredients in holy ointments, and also an ingredient in embalming. It is used in medicine and as a perfume. Baltazar also brought many other expensive gifts and treasures along with his journey. He died soon after in the presence of the other Wise Men.

8 Day Before On 5 January Spain celebrates the end of Christmas with a great party where everybody gives and receives presents. It is to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men - Melchior Caspar and Balthazar - to the city where Jesus was born. In the same way that the Three Wise Men gave gifts to baby Christ, here they share out presents amongst children around Spain - in fact; they are more popular than Santa Claus. Before going to sleep, children put some milk and biscuits next to the Christmas tree for the Three Kings and some water for their camels. They also leave out their best pair of shoes to be filled with presents.

9 Throughout the Day During this day, all families enjoy a piece of roscon (a sugar-frosted fruit-filled bread) for breakfast tradition says that the person who finds a novelty such as a coin, in his or her portion will have good luck for the next year. Used to put presents in shoes but now under tree. 6 January children wake up and see how many presents they have received. If they have been good, they will find a lot of good presents but if they have been naughty they will find coal. These days, the coal is actually made of sugar, but some years ago it was real coal.

10 Three Kings Day Culture in Mexico In Mexico the tradition is that children write letters to the Wise Men asking for presents. On January 5th, families go to a beautiful park in Mexico for a festival full of toys, and photo booths with wise men. Hundreds of thousands of helium balloons are sold during the season, and the children attatch their letters to them, and have them fly up into the sky carrying the wishes to the wise men. Before going to bed the children place their old shoes under their bed or in the living room. The Wise Men will then leave them their presents in such areas. Some people place hay and a bucket of water outside for the animals and cookies with milk for the Wise Men.

11 Three Kings Day Customs in Puerto Rico In Puerto Rico, On La Víspera de Reyes (The Eve of Three Kings Day) the children cut up grass to place into a shoebox under their beds. In the middle of the night they believe camels come and eat the grass from under the bed. Their wish list is placed on top of the grass.in the morning when they wake up they find the grass has been eaten by the camels, and presents have been left in the shoebox by the Wise Men.

12 Three Kings Day Customs in Spain There are lots of processions of the Three Wise Men in each city, the children go along with their parents to see the kings and receive sweets from them.
