My Money Week National Competition It s back for 2016! The National Competition for Schools returns in 2016, and this year alongside the great prizes on offer for the winners, the first 100 schools to enter will also be offered a FREE class visit to KidZania London! 1 This year we are considering how we value what makes us happy. Learning how to value the things that are truly important to us and be able to make decisions about what we really need or just want are key to managing our money effectively. We have developed lesson plans to support and help you inspire your students to produce creative competition entries, and become more financially capable at the same time! How to enter: 1) Use the activities in this pack to inspire students to produce creative competition entries. 2) Complete one entry per student, and one overall teacher entry form per class or group. 3) Send your entries to the PO Box address by Saturday 2 nd July Good luck! 1 The first 100 schools entering Young Enterprise s My Money Week national competition will be offered a FREE class visit to KidZania London for up to 30 children (plus a maximum of 6 accompanying adults). Visits need to take place during 5 th -16 th September and 3rd - 21st October 2016 (excludes weekends). Eligible schools will be notified w/c 11 July, and provided with booking instructions. Any and all transport and travel arrangements, including any incurred costs, will be the sole responsibility of the school. 1

My Money Week National Competition 2016 Ages 3-7 Lesson Plan Learning Objectives To appreciate that money might make us feel happy or sad To understand that our happiness is not always dependent on money To create an interesting and personal Happiness Chart for the My Money Week competition 2016 Learning Outcomes All pupils will be able to identify things that make them happy Most pupils will be able to talk about how money makes them feel Some pupils will understand that some of the things that make us happy can be free Time: One hour plus additional time for producing competition entries Resources: Money Prompt cards Copy of the story A question of happiness Happiness Chart Template Introduction Start by splitting the children into groups and give each group a Money Prompt card, ask them to discuss the prompt on the card in their group, and then share their ideas with the rest of the class. Main Activity Read the story A question of happiness aloud to the children. There are points in the story where there are questions to ask the children. The story is designed to explore with the children the idea of whether we always need money to be happy, the sorts of things that make us happy and the choices we make. Once you have read the story and explored the questions, ask the children to think of some specific things that make them happy. These could include doing things that make other people happy, use this to make links with some of the ideas and discussions from the story. 2

Use the ideas generated by the children to create a happiness list for the classroom and to refer to later. Competition Entry Outline the Money Week 2016 competition, and explain that this year we are asking pupils to think about what makes them happy. Their challenge is to produce a Happiness Chart showing five different things that make them happy e.g. being kind to other people, spending time with friends, receiving a gift etc. Pupils should then rank them in terms of importance, thinking about the value of money they would place on each of the things that make them happy. Explain that children all over the country will be producing their own happiness charts. Detail the prizes to be won, and explain that their entries will be competing with other primary schools from all over the country. Using the template provided the children should identify and draw a picture of each of their ideas and then give them a happiness score using the given amounts of 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and 1. When the children have created their charts, identify as a class, the top five things that make them happy and add this information to the teacher cover sheet. Plenary Discuss the top five ideas they have come up with. Do they need money to do these things or are they free? Why might we sometimes have to choose free things? Extension Ideas Ask their family and friends what makes them happy, is it different to their own ideas? Challenge them to think of different ways to make their classroom a happier place. 3

Receiving money for a special occasion makes me feel. Giving money to charity makes me feel. Using my money to buy something for someone else makes me feel Spending money makes me feel. Saving money makes me feel Not having enough money makes me feel. Losing money makes me feel Finding money makes me feel Knowing someone else has money makes me feel. Money Prompt Cards 4

A question of happiness Emily and Sam are good friends. One day they were walking to the park talking and laughing together, and they passed an old lady who said to them, Oh, it does make me happy to see children having fun and being happy together. This made Sam think, he asked Emily what made her happy and she said Being with my family, getting my pocket money each week and going as high as I can on the swings as it makes me feel as if I m flying. Sam thought about this and then he said The things that make me happy are buying a new toy, watching TV and going to the zoo. Do any of these things make you feel happy too? What answer would you have given when asked about what makes you feel happy? Did Emily and Sam have the same ideas about things that make them happy? Wow! Emily said we like different things don t we? Yes we do, Sam said, but getting my pocket money makes me feel happy too. Anyway, it s alright to like different things. I suppose so Emily replied. My mum always says she likes to make others happy, and you know I like making other people happy too, when I know I ve done that, it makes me happy too said Sam. What do you mean? asked Emily. Well, said Sam, I like to make my mum happy by helping out around the house and I like to smile at people to show them that I feel happy. I also feel happy when I m having fun with my friends because they are having fun too. I d not thought about that before Emily replied, You know I think you are right, it is nice to do things to make other people happy, I like it when we do charity things at school, because you know you are helping make life happier for others. Why might making other people happy make you feel happy too? What do you like to do that makes other people happy? 5

Emily and Sam got to the park, Emily was on the swing, trying to go as high as she could when she called to Sam There s a saying about happiness isn t there, something about money too? Umm, isn t it money can t buy you happiness? replied Sam. Oh yes, that s right said Emily, I knew it was something to do with money! So do you agree money can t buy you happiness? she asked. Hmm, I m not sure Sam answered, After all if you think about the things we said made us happy, some of them cost money and some of them didn t, so perhaps we don t always need money to be happy. Think of the things Emily and Sam said made them happy which things would have cost them money? What do you think? Do you always have to have money to be happy? Come on, time to go home called Sam. I know you won t be happy about that! As they walked home Emily said When we get home, we should make a list of all the things we can think of that make us happy. That s a great idea said Sam. Let s do it! 6
